Apple released the iPhone Software update iOS 4.1, the latest firmware update contains baseband update and it’s un-compatible with Ultrasn0w. So if you are on pwned iOS 4.X.X, then you can update to iOS 4.1 pwned with the help of modified pwnage tool. Following is the guide to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS with iOS 4.1 final version. Please read the whole post thoroughly and then try to jailbreak your iPhone.

Note / Warning :

• The revised version of Pwnage Tool can not activate the phone. This means that if you own an iPhone 3G alien force you to use the original SIM Card or the Phonebook Card.
• Pwnage tool linked in this guide isn’t released by Dev team, it’s an unofficial release by Criminal90. Big thanks to Criminal90 and iSpazio
• You must be on already pwned 4.X.X / Old Bootrom or check if you satisfies the following conditions.

I am on iPhone 3GS 3.0/3.0.1/3.1/3.1.2/ iOS 4 GM Pwned  : You are in

I am on iPhone 3GS 3.1.3 Spirit : Stay Away and Wait

• iPhone 3GS and Mac OS only.
• Use this guide on your own risk, i am not responsible for any damage (if any).

Requirements:

• Modified Pwnage Tool by Criminal90 Download here
• iPhone 3GS iOS 4.0.1 Download Here
• iTunes 10

Instructions :

Step One). Download the required files and make a folder on Desktop called “iHackintosh” or whatever you want and put the Firmware 4.1 and Pwnage tool in iHackintosh folder.

Step Two). Close all other running programs and launch Pwnage tool from iHackintosh folder by double click.

Step Three). Choose your Mode, Simple Mode or Expert Mode

• Simple Mode - Which provides step by step instructions as below and automatically detects your correct firmware and adds the unlock and activation and jailbreak with Cydia automatically to your
  custom firmware.
• Expert Mode – Where you can adjust the settings on the various different additions to the custom firmware – if you click through and do not change anything in expert mode it will make the same

In the following post we used Expert mode for better reliability.

Step Four). In the next window click and select your iPhone. A big green check-mark will appear over the image of the phone which you selected. Once you selected the iPhone model then click the blue arrow button at bottom to continue.

Step Five). You will be brought to the “Browse for IPSW” Windows. On my Hackint0sh, it automatically found the IPSW. If PwnageTool doesn’t automatically find the ipsw file you can click Browse for IPSW(Just in Case)

Step Six). In the next screen click to select General then click the blue arrow button at the bottom right corner.

Step Seven). You’ll get to the General Settings Screen. The General settings allows you to decide the partition size, Activate the phone and Enabled baseband update. The most crucial step of your process so be careful and read it 3-4 times before getting in to the business. Check Activate the phone if you are not with an official carrier then click the blue arrow button. Deselect Activate if you have an iPhone legitimately activated on an official carrier.

1. If you are using an Official service provider (i.e. AT&T) you do not need to “Unlock Baseband”, therefore you can Uncheck “Activate the phone”.
2. If You are using an Unofficial service provider (i.e. T-Mobile) then check “Activate the phone” So you can enjoy Ultrasn0w with the 4.1

Note : Enabling the Baseband option is no more available so check the Activate the phone, no matter you need an unlock or not.

Step Eight). The next window Cydia settings menu allows you to create custom packages so you do not have to manually install them later.

• Click to select the Download packages tab. Then click the Refresh button to display all the available packages. Double clicking the package you want will download it and make it available in the Select Packages tab.
• Checkmark the ones you want then Click the blue arrow button.
• The Custom Packages Settings menu displays listed package settings for your custom IPSW. For know leave these settings as is. Click the blue arrow button to continue.

Step Nine). The Custom Logos Settings menu allows you to add your own images, you can pick your custom logo settings. If you uncheck them both, the originals will remain. Once done click the blue arrow button to continue.

Step Ten). You are now ready to begin the Pwnage process! Click the Build button to select it then click the Blue arrow button to begin.

Step Eleven). You will be asked to save your custom .ipsw file. Save it to your Pwnage folder you created on your Desktop.

• Your IPSW is not being built. Please allow up to 10 minutes.
• You will be asked to enter your administrator password. Do this then click the OK button.

Step Twelve). Now another question, if your iPhone has been pwned before, or if you already unlocked or did jailbreak earlier. If you do not know, simply answer “No”.

If you’re already jailbroken (by whatever means), you don’t need to mess around with DFU mode at all.  Just create (or get from a friend) your custom IPSW and Option-Restore (Shift-Restore on Windows) to it via iTunes.  Don’t enter DFU mode at all.  Please make sure you are restoring to the custom IPSW, not the stock one from Apple!  For best results, use the latest iTunes (10) — which includes a nice new application organizer.

Step Thirteen). Now one of the most important steps since the PwnageTool makes your iPhone into the mode of repair, called “DFU mode”, but then we need your help by pressing the buttons on / off in conjunction with the “home” for 10 seconds after releasing the button on / off and keeping the “home” for another 10 seconds.

Step Fourteen). Don’t worry if your timing goes wrong, because if you can not do at the right time Pwnage toll will ask you to try again. If everything worked, you get into DFU mode and your iPhone is ready to be unlocked. The Pwnage Tool has created an image software on your iPhone containing the release and to be able to finish your iTunes to restore this file “unlocked.”

Step Fifteen). Now enter in iTunes to restore your iPhone. Logo of guy that tells iTunes detected an iPhone in DFU mode and you need to restore. .

Step Sixteen). In iTunes, hold the Alt/Option key and click Restore. Navigate to the iHackintosh folder on your desktop using the dialog window that appears. Select the custom IPSW that was created and click the Open button. iTunes will now restore the firmware on your iPhone. This can also take up to 10 minutes.

Saurik developed a great way to get your signature files in Cydia regardless of the firmware you are running, but it requires a jailbroken phone. Apple is almost ready to release iOS 4.01 while iOS 4.1 is distributed to developers, on the other side iPhone Dev team achieved a full jailbreak and unlock of iPhone 4 iOS 4. So it is highly recommended to save your SHSH, so you can downgrade back to iOS 4 any time. Since iOS 4 jailbreak isn’t public at the moment you can save your iOS 4 SHSH with Firmware Umbrella. Well, here is how to get them.

Why i need ECID SHSH Dump ? Apple added a new piece of security called ECID, The nature of iPad / iPhone 3GS / iPod Touch 3G / iPhone 4 hardware allows Apple to stop IPSWs from being usable unless you’ve already gotten the signed chunks they send to you based on your ECID (a unique chip ID). Actually Apple applies ECID so the iDevice will refuse to accept the ipsw file while downgrading because of a bad signature. It will treat it as a custom ipsw without having the apple server sign the ipsw specifically for your phone id before flashing.

Note : This procedure allows you to save your precious SHSH blobs on your PC/Mac so you can save them forever. You must have your SHSH saved on Saurik server by hitting the make my life easier button on home page of Cydia. If you already saved your SHSH on Saurik server you needn’t to repeat the process every time.

!! it is very important to keep doing this for every firmware version that comes out after these !!

Windows:

1. Get your ECID following this instructions: How to Grab iPad ECID on Windows and Mac

2. Download firmware umbrella thefirmwareumbrella, place on desktop.

3. Now put your iDevice in recovery mode.

4. Open umbrella.exe with administrator privileges, and it’ll automatically detect your iDevice, tick on advanced options and enter your ECID number and hit the reset button (this will request the shsh signature from APPLE and save it to your PC)

5. By doing this you will save your shsh copy in the same directory where the umbrella.exe file is, copy it and rejoice, for you have your own 64kb gold with you.

Mac:

1. Get your ECID following this instructions: How to Grab iPad ECID on Windows and Mac

2. Get firmware umbrella  thefirmwareumbrella, move the Umbrella app OUT of the .dmg file preferably onto your desktop.

3. Now put your iDevice in recovery mode.

4. Launch umbrella app, and it’ll automatically detect your iDevice, tick on advanced options and enter your ECID number, select the location to Apple and hit the reset button (this will request the shsh signature from APPLE and save it to your Mac)

4. By doing this you will save your shsh copy in the same directory where the umbrella.app file is, copy it and rejoice, for you have your own 64kb gold with you.

Last year Apple updated iBoot of iPhone after 4 months of it’s release, so there are two types of iPhone 3GS available in the wild, first are with old iBoot version 359.3 and others are new iBoot version iBoot: 359.3.2  The bootrom is a snippet of code that runs at startup time, and checks on the status of the boot image. It’s generally used to verify that the image has not been corrupted, but can also be used to check for unauthorized firmware.

Older bootrom are exploitable with 24kpwn vulnerability, so we can jailbreak them with pwnage tool up to iOS 4, on the other hand newer bootrom are waiting for a new exploit / vulnerability. Following are the instructions to check your bootrom version.

To check iPhone 3GS bootrom version on Mac OS :

• Put your iPhone in DFU mode.

(Connect your iPhone to iTunes, turn off, click power+home button for 10 seconds, leave POWER button after 10 seconds, holding HOME button) If the Restore Logo is present on the screen, you are in Recovery Mode, not DFU.

• iTunes will detect your iPhone in recovery mode, ignore the iTunes message.
• check in System Profiler for the iBoot version.
• In that information, you will find [iBoot-359.x] at the end.

To check iPhone 3GS bootrom version on Windows :

• Put your iPhone in DFU mode.

(Connect your iPhone to iTunes, turn off, click power+home button for 10 seconds, leave POWER button after 10 seconds, holding HOME button) If the Restore Logo is present on the screen, you are in Recovery Mode, not DFU.

A user of apfeltalk forums encountered something unexpected when he recently got his iPhone 3G, According to forum user ordered iPhone 3G but the packaging indicates a 3GS with 8GB. A mistake by Apple or is selling the 8GB iPhone 3GS with before?  Maybe the iPhone 3G stock is finally sold out and Apple will quietly or not quietly (26th Jan Conference) replace the $99 model iPhone with an 8GB 3GS. • In next screen you can select Export to iTunes button, export via SCP etc.

Yesterday Saurik updated the tool on the home page of Cydia, which retrieves and saves the ECID of our 3GS iPhone so we can downgrade at any time. Eagle Eyed folks at iSpazio noticed the change according to them, until a few hours ago, on the opening page of Cydia receive a message that only the first version of the firmware that had been saved ECID (first screenshot), but now are clearly displayed all versions of the firmware can install on your iPhone 3GS (second screenshot). Update 1). The 24 hours timeline is finished and it seems GeoHot requires some more time. According to his recent disclosures it is cleared that he is working on exploiting the AT+XEMN Command. AT+XEMN is a command on baseband 5.11.07 (pushed out with official 3.1.2 firmware), which when exploited correctly, causes a heap overflow allowing the crash to be molded into an injection vector. This injection vector can then be used to inject the Ultrasn0w/Generic Unlocking Payload to provide a coveted Software Sim Unlock on Official 3.1.2 running 5.11.07 The good news is that he is still working on the 05.11.07 baseband so keep your finger crossed and keep  checking this space regularly.

Update 2). It’s almost 48 hours since GeoHot starts his work, i know we have many desperate guyz here who accidentally updated their baseband to 5.11.07 All i have to say is keep your faith in GeoHot he is working hard on a new unlock. Jody Sander owner of a popular iPhone unlocking site starts a contest for encouraging all iPhone hackers, he made a 10,000$ bounty for who first unlock the baseband 5.11.07 here is the official Jody’s challenge page , don’t worry if GeoHot accepts his prize the unlock will be free for community. Jody Sander haz a bad reputation in Dev Team eyes because he used to sell pwnage tool and yellowsn0w, but Jody claims he only sells the support.

After jailbreak your iPhone 3GS firmware 3.1.2 with pwnage tool you must noticed that the carrier name or logo on the top left side of the status bar is missing. The reason why there is no carrier logo probably due to the baseband is not upgraded. PwnageTool keeps the old baseband 4.26.08 after updating. Many of you may used the Make it Mine trick but it’s ugly and it remains same when you enters to roaming. Another workaround editing the carrier.plist is also available but it takes time.
