Twitter for iPhone application has been updated to fill some gaps in functionality including the push notification. Twitter also added URL shortcuts, support of the retina display, ability to geotagg and compatibility with the iOS 4.2
There is also the ability to get notifications via SMS. You do this by registering your phone on the page http://twitter.com/devices.
