How to Put Apple TV in to DFU Mode

1 October 2010 by Vinay No Comment

DFU Mode is a special mode where the device can still interface with iTunes, yet it does not load the iBoot. The screen will appear totally black in DFU mode, so you can’t guess whether the device is in DFU or powered down from simply looking at the screen. Because iBoot and the OS are not loaded this exploit makes us able to downgrade your iDevice firmware or upgrade with a custom firmware created by Pwnage tool.

We just got confirmation from independent iOS hacker @StealthBravo that DFU mode for Apple TV has been discovered.

Instructions to enter in DFU Mode ATV:

  • Plugin your Apple TV with microUSB.
  • Hold menu + down button together for 6 secs to reboot.
  • Once your Apple TV reboots immediately hold menu + play together until a message appears in iTunes telling you an Apple TV in recovery mode has been detected.
