Jailbreak iPhone 3GS iOS 4.0, 4.0.1 with Jailbreakme.com
Finally wait is over and jailbreak for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G iOS 4.0 and 4.0.1 is available in the wild and needless to mention this is the most easiest procedure to jailbreak. Following are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone using the Jailbreakme right on your iPhone 3GS.
Things to know about jailbreakme jailbreak:
- Jailbreakme is a browser based jailbreak for iPod touch, iPod touch 2G, iPod touch 3G with iOS 4.0 and 4.0.1
- Jailbreakme does not include a carrier unlock.
- Jailbreakme requires your device to be activated or hacktivated, if you aren’t you are out of luck.
- Jailbreakme requires your device on 3G service or WiFi connectivity.
1. Browse to www.jailbreakme.com through our device and wait for the complete page load. 
2. Once your page loads swipe your finger across "Slide to jailbreak", very similar to "Slide to unlock" what we perform daily by LockScreen to access the springboard of our device.
3. Now wait and watch while your device will begin to download the data necessary to execute the jailbreak procedure.
4. Once the download is complete, the words come out "Jailbreaking Sit Tight. "
5. Wait a few seconds while installation finishes and a new popup will warn that Cydia icon is added on the springboard.

Hi, got same on my 3gs 4.01 new iboot. It’s just keeps crashing.

I did reset my network settings this time and then tried it and it went threw..so if anybody else is having that same problem, try resetting network settings!

Nothing happens on my 3GS IOS4.0 (8A293)on 05.13.04 firmware. No cydia installed nothing. However, I do notice the website is keeping a counter to see how many times it’s been accessed.

Worked for me.. at first nothing was happening, just getting the background screen. I restarted my phone, tried again, and it worked. I now have Cydia installed on my homepage.

If your SAFARI isn’t working due to an error when trying to do the jailbreak just reset all settings on your phone and SAFARI will work again. Thats what i did. now when i try to do the jailbreak its stuck on the purple screen iphone 4g. I turned my phone off and tried the jailbreak and it worked
IF YOUR STUCK AT THE PURPLE SCREEN JUST TURN PHONE OFF AND ON AND TRY AGAIN.
IF SAFARI DOESNT WORKS OR ANY SEARCH ENGINES JUST GO TO PHONE SETTING AND RESET ALL SETTINGS ON PHONE AND IT WILL WORK AGAIN NOTHING WILL BE LOST.

Well, just did it with the 3GS iOS 4.0.1. new bootroom from jealbreakme.com and fixed it in 1 try! Cydia installed, no problems at all! (so far)
Try a restore to factory default for your 3GS AFTER backup on iTunes and use the Modmyi site, then restore your backup… That’s what I had to do. All good, I even unlocked… But My Cydia is giving me a Bad Gatway error on my WiFi network… Any clue guys?

I have enough of this. Since yesterday trying and trying and no download shows up. I really shift that slider for 1.000.000 times and still nothing.
For more then 24 hours I have spend my time sitting to wait for a server that is loaded of users. I will wait for a week and see what happen.
Finally jail breaked. I had a problem but now I have it jail breaked also. Good luck to others

Hi , it is working for me , i have 3gs 4.01 newbootroom. First time when i used jailbreakme.com , i did not get any response .it just shows the purple color background. Then i removed the cable , and enter jailbreakme.modmyi.com. Then i got the downloading screen and all. Please remember one thing many apps are not supporting 4.01. So if u install such app the cydia will give a message “Exit safe Mode”. If u get a message uninstall the last installed app. So install one app then close cydia, then try another installation . So i did the proccess no my 3gs wont connect to itunes, i tried recovery, dfu, and re boot nothing works!!

When i update to 4.0.1 to do the jailbreak with jailbreakme.com is there any way to ensure that you wont go the the “connect to itunes” screen? My 3gs is already jailbroken.. will that make any difference?

When you say activated or hacktovated, what does that mean? I have a 3GS that no longer has an active sim (shut off when I got a 4). Jailbreae fails on this phone (effectively now wifi or mifi bound). This can not be done? If I have another 3gs with a working sim, can I use the sim and do the jb and then put the sim back in the other phone (without affecting that phone)?
i am having the same problem. after updating to os 4.0.1 the home screen shows emergency calls only and activate with carrier to unlock.. how am i suppose to open safari if it wont go past the emergency call thing..

Seems like this version is not stable!
When soft reset you will see some line at blank screen.
Quicklock cannot be used cause it will springboard crash!
I tried it on my 3gs which was updated to iOS 4.0 with iTunes from Apple. It worked like a charm no issues and in about a minute it was jailbroken. After that I tried unlocking and that worked like a charm as well.
To make sure it did work I put a T-mobile sim in it and tried the first time. It did not work than I turned the phone completely off and tried again…and guess what the nework was on T-mobile and I was able to make call and recieve calls.

Firstly, im not a tech guru or mastermind. Im just a logical guy who is patient and uses trial and error methods. This maybe a little fix which worked for me.
I downloaded the “iPhone2,1_4.0.1_8A306_Restore.ipsw” file via “http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=750″ for my 3gs iphone.
I used itunes for the restore by keeping hold of ‘Alt’ when pressing the restore button. This allowed me to select the ipsw file i just downloaded. I went through the normal restore process and then my phone rebooted.
After the reboot i came across another problem first. My phone had been locked to an Vodaphone.au as i had it on contract over there, but now im in europe. I had thrown away my old sim and the screen was telling me that i had to contact my network carrier to get a new sim. I was lucky that my girlfriend had a prepaid sim with the same carrier. I placed this sim in and the phone activated…thank god! Otherwise i would have been in the s%@t. Apparently you can also use what is called a “Phonebook Card” [http://www.ditsblog.com/tag/phonebook-card/] by Dits. This also works as it does not require a password and you can you it no matter what carrier your phone is locked to.
So my phone is actived and working as i bought it. Now i restored all my music, contacts etc via the itunes backup i had of my phone. This gave me a normal phone apart from the jailbroken apps.
I was in a restaurant with free wi-fi at the time doing all this so the internet was not very quick. I logged onto “http://www.jailbreakme.com” and used the slider. The next message popped up “Oops File Received Was Invalid”. I repeated the process a few times but to no progress.
Jailbreakme would not install at all.
This is where i think these next steps work.
I restored the phone yet again for the last time. Activated the phone with the sim and restored my data. Then i turned off the wifi, turned off 3g, and reset Safari’s cache, cookies and history on the iphone [found in the settings menu]. I left the restaurant and went home. I left the phone on but without any internet connection for about 10 hours (basically i went to bed unhappy) I woke up the next day to find that my internet was being installed in my apartment. Excellent i thought. I have a 100mb/s glass fiber connection installed now. Super fast! I turned my iphones wifi signal on straight away and tried the jailbreak me website again to see if still didn’t work. I was 100% sure it wasn’t going to work. I mean why would it be any different today just a few hours later?? I got a big shock when i slid the slider and jailbreakme told me it was installing. F$@^ing Brilliant!!!!
It installed perfectly and i went straight into the cydia app and downloaded ultrasn0w so i could put my new O2 sim in. Then downloaded installous and appsync. Now my phone is perfectly jailbroken and unlocked and running my downloaded apps once i synced it with itunes once more.
I think once you restore your phone you need to leave it without any wireless connections for a while so that the phone can settle the new restore. Also i think using a fast internet connection helps too. Also resetting safari’s cache and cookies. I’m sure this is key as i tried maybe 40 times the previous night.

i have iphone 3gs 4.0, i tried to jailbreak with jailbreakme and after the downloading bar finished, safari closed immediately and i couldn’t find cydia but i was able to run cracked apps that i had still from my previous firmware with jailbreak (3.1.2).
i decided to reboot, i turned off the device, but when itried to reboot it, i got the apple logo and it stays there, the pc doesn’t recognise the iphone even though it’s connected but it’s not booting and i can’t get it into dfu mode or recovery.
