Jailbreak your iPhone

Downgrade iOS 4.0.2 to 4.0.1 for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS

Advertisements

Apple released iOS 4.0.2 in response of jailbreakme pdf exploit, so as of today, Apple has stopped signing 4.0.1 restore files. That means that if you have a iPhone 4 /  3GS you cannot restore any firmware other than iOS 4..0.2 If you guys updated to iOS 4.0.2 and wanna go back to iOS 4.0.1 here is the step by step guide to downgrade your iPhone 4 / 3GS iOS 4.0.2 to 4.0.1 or below. This hack can be attempted only for those, who saved their SHSH to Cydia Server before the release of iOS 4.0.1 via Cydia “make my life easier” button.

bricked-iphone

The process is very simple all you have to do is to add Saurik’s Server address to your system hosts file. This trick make iTunes thinks it is talking to Apple, it is talking to Cydia instead while the restoring process. Doing this will allow iTunes to access signatures already stored by Cydia “on file” feature. In simple words this duplicates the functionality exposed by Apple’s signature server, except using “on file” results rather than live request.

Note:

  1. This process is only for those who saved their SHSH to Cydia Server already.
  2. Read the whole process two-three times before starting the process.

How to Edit and Save Hosts file in Windows

  • Open Notepad with Administrative privileges by clicking Start, All Programs,Accessories, and then right-click Notepad and select to open as Administrator.
  • Now browse to (C:/Windows / System32 / drivers / etc) in Notepad and open the hosts file, and add the following entry to the bottom of the file.

    74.208.10.249    gs.apple.com               <————

Now you navigate to files menu and save the hosts file. By doing this you changed the communication server from Apple to Sauriks Server, because your ECID is on that server. Now you can put your iPhone in DFU mode to restore back to to OS 4.0.1 or lower. Follow our previous guide Downgrade iPhone 3G / 3GS

How to Edit and Save Hosts file in Mac OS X

  • Navigate to Finder, Click to select Go to Folder… from the Go menu and Enter /etc into the input field and click the Go button.
  • Now look for hosts file, right click on hosts file and open with Text Edit, and add the following entry to the bottom of the file.

74.208.10.249   gs.apple.com <————

  • Now save the file and click on Save As.
  • Because Text Editor can’t save your system files, here comes the tricky part, in save as windows use the following settings, take a close look at the following image.

Uncheck the “ If no extension is provide, use .txt “ and then press the save button.

  • A host file will be appear on your Desktop, just drag and drop to /etc and follow the onscreen instructions.

By doing this you changed the communication server from Apple to Sauriks Server, because your ECID is on that server. Now you can put your iPhone in DFU mode to restore to any of the previous OS. Follow our previous guide Downgrade iPhone 3G / 3GS

hold shift while pressing the restore button on itunes and navigating to the file location.

I did all that but the downgrade could’nt be varified with apple. I read that apple will only varify new versions and will no longer varify the older versions. So this did’nt work for me.

My hosts file has been updated with the info for the cydia server. My ECID SHSH’s have been saved to Cydia as I’ve downgraded in the past. However, when I try to restore to 4.0 from 4.0.2 I’m getting “Device is not eligible for the requested build.” I’ve reread everything 100 times and am sure I did the hosts file switch correctly but iTunes still seems to be connecting to Apple’s server instead of Cydia. Any ideas?

    Hi guys

When i hit the restore button while holding shift, it just ask for a normal restore. I don’t get to choose a file

    any ideas ? ;)

I can downgrade my iPhone4 from FW 4.0.2 to FW 4.0.1 by following the steps above. But it appears “Error 1004″ after completed the steps and it stay at the “Recovery Mode”. I then use the “RecBoot” to click the “Exit Recovery Mode”. Then my iPhone4 reboots and works fine!

But the problem is – After downgraded to FW 4.0.1, it can’t jailbreak by JailBreakMe.Com!

If this can’t jailbreak iphone after downgraded to 4.0.1, I think the downgrade process is useless!

Was that it, just hold shift while pressing the restore button on itunes and navigating to the file location ?

Is this possible todo on an 3GS 4.0.2 without the SHSH saved for 4.0.1?

I bought an iphone on ebay and its an 8g and it was jailbroken but before he shipped it to me, he restored it to original settings and it took the jailbreak off of it. I got it, and it hardly picks up any service. When I sync’d it to my itunes, it upgraded it to 4.0.2. Did this by chance make it have less service. I can’t get over one bar. I have contacted apple and at&t could someone please help so my 200 bucks dosen’t ge thrown down the drain. Other than Not hardly any service or good reception, its great. Thanks !!!! I can’t get this to work. I have an iPhone 4 & saved my ECID with Cydia at 4.0.1. I have a file in my /etc folder called hosts.umbrella. (A remnant from Tiny Umbrella, I’m guessing). I’ve tried deleting this file, re-booting, everything. I just can’t get iTunes to accept my attempts to restore back to the 4.0.1 ipsw.

Did anyone else have the hosts.umbrella file, have similar issues & find a solution?

Stephen, For 3G use redsn0w. Hat, use RecBoot to get out of that apple screen and redsn0w can do the rest

Wondering why i didnt jailbreak this iphone, the initial jailbreak that allowed for the unlock was not properly done and I couldnot get the AT&T sim and the so i had to wait since my iphone was unlocked and can still be used as a phone with my carier.

I have the SHSH blobs for 4.0 and 4.0.1 saved with cydia but NOT 3.1.2 or 3.1.3. i have downloaded the iOS 4.0.1. is it possible for me to use this guide and it will work without having serious consequences?

I am trying to downgrade. I tried all of the steps but it is saying that I am not authorized on my Mac OS to do this. I am the admin and I also unlocked to give me the ability to read and write on this folder. I even enabled all users to be able to read and write on this folder. I restarted my comp and in the host folder info it even says that I have the ability to read and write this folder… but it is not enabling me to do this. I followed all of the steps and I don’t understand why it is not working. Please help me when you can. I will be very grateful..

    Thanks!

    Iphone 3gs 32g jailbroken
Updated to 4.0.1 and had major problems. The usual, Iphone would go to black screen and disconnect me during calls. I was only able to talk for less then a min. unless i was on speaker phone.Poor signal, all this after 4.0 upgrade.
Decided to downgrade but i was flustered and accidently upgraded to 4.0.2 ARGH! right….lol
Soooo found this topic and did everything as listed above to downgrade from 4.0.2 to 4.0.1. I was stuck on recovery loop for awhile but this tutorial helped alot. and I didn’t need to use irecovery or recboot to get me out of it. Just used edited host file and 4.0.1 ipsw. luckily had shsh on file with cydia. Just remember to make sure you know how to properly boot into dfu mode.
Restored Iphone as a new devise. and jailbroke it, then restored an older backup And now all my problems are fixed, except the bad reception.
Thanks so much for this post.

My phone has been stuck in China customs for the past 2 weeks so I didn’t get to save the SHSH blobs. It is on 4.0.1 for sure still. Can i jailbreak it as it is but then if I need to restore I am out of luck again? Is that right?
