Guide to Change Your iPad SSH Password

4 May 2010 by Vinay 9 Comments

When you jailbreak, the filesystem’s password is set to the common password “alpine” As people usually don’t bother changing this password after performing a jailbreak, it’s really easy for hackers to get access to any jailbroken iPad on a public network. Changing the password is quick and easy — after the jump is a tutorial showing how to change the SSH password.

iPad

Note : Mobile terminal isn’t compatible at the moment, for the time being you can turn off Turn of SSH when not required. Install SBSettings from Cydia so you can turn it off or on when you really required this. Once Mobile Terminal gets updated with iPad support you can change your password with the following instructions.

Change the Root Password of iPad : it’s the most easiest way all you need is to install Mobile Terminal and perform the following commands.

  • su root                                                 >> login to root with all access <<
  • alpine                                                  >>  it’s your default password <<
  • passwd                                              >> To change your default password <<

Now, your SSH password will be changed and your device will be protected against any future hacks that use SSH to access your device

So I’ve always been unsure about this as I’ve only heard what people have “thought” about this, but if you don’t install SSH you’re safe from people getting into your device using SSH right? I’ve tested this with my own iProducts, but I wasn’t sure if there’s something that I’m overlooking.

neFos.. did you remove blackra1n with a restore before using spirit because the instructions said bad things would happen if you were still jailbroken

You can change your password now without mobile terminal.

    In OS X:

Launch Terminal and type the following, changing 192.168.0.100 with your iPad’s network IP.
(Notice: The first time you connect to your iPad will take about a minute. It’ll ask if you want to continue connecting, type yes.

    ssh root@192.168.0.100
    hit enter
    passwd root
    hit enter
    passwd mobile
    hit enter

You don’t need JUST OSX either to do this. ANY SSH client running on any OS can connect. That’s what the SSH daemon is there for!

Hey thanks for the tutorial and all but after I changed the root password, it wiped my lock passcode, and after I put the passcode back on, I had discovered that and all my app passwords and my wifi networks…… Any way to get these back? It seems like it’s just wiped all the passwords on the whole iPad. I’ve tried changing the root password back to alpine but it they’re still gone…. A little help??
    Thanks

I have an iPad just wifi, jail broken with spirit, cydia runs well, but mobile terminal always crashes, I reinstalled it, didn’t change anything, also installed dtunes which won’t download nay torrents whether it’s pirate bay or beething and openssh which didn’t seem to make a difference, am I missing something vital like I need an ios- something, do I need to get shsh? The background app from cydia worked so I don’t think that it is a cydia problem, ps I don’t have an iPhone, but I don’t see why that would make a difference, would much appreciate the help, thnx
