Downgrade iPhone 2G 3G OS 3.1.3 to 3.1.2 or lower

Advertisements

Dev team already warned don’t upgrade to 3.1.3 and wait for next version of Pwnage Tool to preserve your baseband. Upgrading to 3.1.3 with Ultrasn0w/Blacksn0w installed will cause people to lose their unlock and will be unable (for the time being) to get it back. OS 3.1.3 contains a baseband update 05.12.01 BB for iPhone 3G and 3GS. The latest  Modem Firmware 05.12.01 BB is not down gradable. So if you accidentally updated your iPhone 2G, 3G or 3GS to OS 3.1 here is the handy guide for downgrading.

Remember this will not downgrade your baseband only your firmware will be downgraded. It’s possible to downgrade OS however we strongly suggest you to carry on with OS 3.1.3 until Dev team update Pwnage Tool or redsn0w Tool.

Update for iPhone 3GS : So as of today, Apple has stopped signing 3.1.2 restore files. That means that if you have a 3GS iPhone you cannot restore any firmware other than 3.1.3 But in case you was wise/lucky enough to save your Cydia SHSH files on Saurik server follow the link below for iHackintosh guide.

Step by Step Guide to Downgrade iPhone 2G and 3G

Step 1: Make sure you have latest iTunes installed, Now connect your iPhone to your computer.

Step 2: Put your iPhone 2G/3G in DFU mode with following instructions.

  • Connect your iPhone to your computer.
  • Turn iPhone off.
  • Hold power and home together for 10 seconds (exactly).
  • Release power but keep holding home until the computers beeps (observed on a PC) as a USB device is recognized.
  • A few seconds later iTunes should detect your iPhone.
  • If the Restore Logo is present on the screen, you are in Recovery Mode, not DFU.

Step 3: Once your iPhone is in DFU mode following message will be appeared in iTunes. Click on “OK” , Now hold Option key while clicking Restore in iTunes and browse the OS 3.1.2 or below firmware for your iPhone 2G, 3G. Now the restore process will take 10 – 15 minutes.16212500_thumb

Step 4: If you encountered an error message like 1011, 1013, 1015, just ignore them(Actually the firmware 3.0 is already successfully installed). Simply launch RedSn0w and do the Jailbreaking Unlocking process again. Check our guides on Jailbreaking iPhone here.

But if you encountered with error message like 1601, 1602, 1600 or anything else then try putting the iPhone into DFU mode and try again.

Disclaimer : This process is universal and tested several times though we are not responsible for and damage (if any) so use it at your own risk. If you like our work then consider to digg the story and help us by spreading the word.

I have a very urgent question!!! I got my iphone 3gs in New york and it was unlocked so i can use it t-mobile as my carrier. However, they told me not to turn it off or i will have to unlock it through itunes again. My sister didn’t know and she plugged the iphone to her laptop and restored the whole thing through itunes. Will it automatically upgrade to 3.13 like that?? URGENT HELP NEED… i don’t have any other phones and remained “contactless” for days. please post an answer for me

Ok so basically i bought at iphone 3gs 32gig unlocked and jailbroken and was using on t-mobile perfectly. I accidently updated it on itunes to firmware 3.1.3 now my unlock is gone and i am stuck with vodafone which is not good because i have a contract with t-mobile. I have used all these snowbreeze, blackrain, blacksnow programs, but everytime i do the shift and restore button on itunes, i sellect 3.1.2 from my desktop and it does load for a little while but it always verifies with the apple store then it wont let me continue to restore it to 3.1.2 it just stays on 3.1.3….. If anyone can give me some advice that would be really helpfull as I have KNOW idea what im doing with an iphone

  8. joe April 3, 2010 Reply

I tried a very similar method to this that told me to just Shift + Restore in iTunes, instead of entering DFU mode before doing so. The DFU Mode seems to have done the trick. I ran RedSnow after without installing Cydia, and it worked, jailbroke the phone. I’m going to use blackra1n to install Cydia. Thank You

  13. Tyler March 25, 2010 Reply

GUYS HOW TO DOWNGRADE FROM 3.1.3 to 3.1.2 is simple, hold the “shift” button then symotaniously press the Restore button on itunes then a file upload will pop up. after you download the 3.1.2 restore file the ipod will go into reboot and then it will fully downgrade to version 3.1.2!!

(if you want to use redsn0w then thats optional, I did but cydia wouldn’t let me download winterboard or any theme related subjects)

  14. rik March 15, 2010 Reply

    DFU mode (google it)

    and error stops!!!

    do all at once…

    restore
    back up

Hey, i got a big problem here. I have the iPhone 2g and when i bought it it was unlocked and jailbroken. I got his phone like couple years ago. Ever since i had it, i never updated it. But two days ago for some reason i chose to update it using iTunes to the new 3.1.3 version. Now, because of that my iPhone seems to be locked. All i have on the main screen is a apple usb cable+itunes logo. Does anyone know what to do? I tried everything, from snowbreeze to redsnow…everything is unsuccessful? Can anyone help me out with this? It’ll be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I need help wiping my iPhone clean and restoring 3.1.2 OS. My fone crashed(stuck on the apple screen) and I had to restore my fone. Apple loaded 3.1.3 WHICH I DIDN”T WANT and I lost all my winterboard customization. Is there anyway to restore WITHOUT going through APPLE? I don’t mind wiping the HD clean and loading ipsw files because I can restore from my last back-up. I really need help because I can’t use this garbage phone in the factory condition! If I can’t go back then I’ll sell this piece of crap and get a Droid!!!!!! The phone isn’t that great anyway and I only kept it for the apps and flexibility I had from the jailbreak. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

@Brandon; are you using the iphone with the jailbreak and unlock with another carrier? im nervous about doing this and i don’t know too much about anything (technology) is it safe and how do you get the 3.1.2 to work? i read it but how do u dl it into the itunes? i need help

  32. Gaurav February 10, 2010 Reply

Darn! I had a JB and unlocked iPhone 3G. Went in to Apple Store last week with battery issues, they replaced the phone, and now I’m on 05.12.01. I do not want an unlock (I’m on an official carrier) but just a JB for installing apps. So is just a JB possible if I’m on 05.12.01 by following the above steps?

    Thanks!

  35. Volknut February 7, 2010 Reply

After a rushed(stupid) restore to 3.1.3… I’ve done the downgrade, loaded 3.1.2 twice with itunes using Tinytss and umbrella (I had my ECID). Then Jailbroke with blackra1n, restored in itunes. I’m having the same issue, I have everything but cell/3g. My guess is that the new 05.12.01 baseband is not compatible with 3.1.2 or there is an activation issue. I would be grateful if someone with more experience could lend me a hand. I’m waiting for sn0wbreeze V1.4 to be released for a final fix to the jailbreak as I don’t need an unlock on att.

i’m success downgrade from 3.1.3 to 3.1.2 but Baseband still with Basebane New 05.12.01

    • Vinay February 6, 2010 Reply

@Erik Because your baseband is updated to new baseband you can’t enjoy unlock anymore.

  37. matty February 6, 2010 Reply

Bottom line is there is no going back once you restored and updated to 3.1.3 until there is a new unlock for 3.1.3 which could take a few weeks.

sigh i have a 3gs and i didnt think b4 i update..now i cant downgrade either…any idea if dev team will be able to prisonbreak this new firmware?

  39. Alex February 5, 2010 Reply

I upgraded to 3.1.3 by accident too after my jailbroken phone got stuck on the apple logo after trying to reset the phone. I restored the phone with the 3.1.2 and blackra1n, but I don’t get a phone signal, the AT&T logo doesn’t come up and if I go to network-settings-about, there’s no network available, the carrier that shows is AT%T 5.5. Would it make a difference to restore the phone with the non activated firmware 3.1.2? instead of the activated one?, and is there a carrier settings file more recent than the AT&T 5.5..please help. I got an iphone 3G 8GB. thank you

  40. matty February 4, 2010 Reply

I understand what @Vinay is trying to say. the problem now is the carrier does not show up in settings and my tmobile sim card does not read even though i got it back to the setting i want it to be after i accidentally restored and upgraded to 3.1.3. I can get everything back and use it as is, but no phone service. I hope devteam or whoever can get us some help soon.

i tried downgrading my 3G back to 3.1.2 and use redsnow after i got the 1015 error. It seems to work but then gets stuck at “installing activation bundles” and has the rotating circle. it is supposed to do this or am i stuck at 3.1.3 now?

  45. Brandon February 3, 2010 Reply

I accidently upgraded to 3.1.3 yesterday evening and noticed afterwards that it was a really bad idea…

Nevertheless, I managed it to restore my iphone back to 3.1.2 and with the help of AptBackup I also restored all my Cydia Apps…

    I proceeded the following steps:

    1. I downloaded a custom firware 3.1.2 (not activated – because I have a apple unlocked iphone)

    2. Set iphone in DFU mode

    3. Restoring via itunes (press shift before you push the restore button and select the downloaded custom firmware)

    4. Since Cydia was already installed with the custom firmware I installed AptBackup and restored everything (the restore was saved with my last itunes backup before the upgrade)

    5. I’m currently synchronising my iphone with itunes to install all apps etc… but it looks very good…

All my winterboard themes, purchased cydia apps (and all others) and everything else is back in place!
    Really great!

    I’m wondering why you wrote:

“Remember this will not downgrade your baseband only your firmware will be downgraded. It’s possible to downgrade OS however we strongly suggest you to carry on with OS 3.1.3 until Dev team update Pwnage Tool or redsn0w Tool.”

What does that mean? My baseband is not downgraded? I have now 3.1.2 back in place but I have a different baseband than before???
What’s the impact for me since I currently don’t notice any problems?

    • Vinay February 3, 2010 Reply

@Brandon Baseband relates to your unlock, for example now your baseband is updated and you can’t unlock your carrier by ultrasn0w/blacksn0w anymore. If you are jailbroken only then it’s fine you needn’t to worry about baseband. For more details check our previous article –> iPhone Baseband and Bootloader From Basic
