Get Prepare to Jailbreak your iPhone
Before attempting the tutorial consider all the following points and select right method for you :

I have a locked iPhone 3G/3GS with firmware 3.X.X not jailbreaked before : Follow the Step One to Step Six.

I have a locked iPhone 3G/3GS with Firmware 3.X.X and jailbreaked before : You have two conditions
3. I am on firmware 3.X.X and i don’t mind a clean install of 3.1.2 : Then simply Download the Stock Firmware linked above and restore your iPhone to stock 3.1.2 With Shift + Restore (Windows) Option + Restore (Mac) in iTunes or simply hit the update button in iTunes and then follow the Step One to Step Six.

Guide to Jailbreak your iPhone
Step One. Download Blackra1n RC3 and double click the rain drop icon to launch the program. Windows 7 Vista users if you have any difficulty in launching the program follow the highlighted instructions otherwise jump to Step Two. I didn’t faced any problem with Windows 7so just in case if Blacksn0w crashes during the launch follow the following three steps otherwise Jump to Step Two.
- Right-click the blackra1n icon and click properties.
- Click the Compatibility tab.
- Under compatibility mode click the box to enable it and select Windows XP (Service Pack 2). Click OK, and then run blackra1n.
Step Two. Click the make it ra1n button.
Step Three. You iPhone will now be placed in recovery mode. You will see a picture of GeoHot that replaces the regular recovery mode screen on your device.
Step Four. Your iPhone or iPod Touch will reboot once blackra1n is done doing it’s thing and you should see the blackra1n icon on there. If you don’t see the blackra1n icon, go to the last page on your iDevice and you should see it.
Step Five. Install your preferred application from the blackra1n app. You have the option of choosing Cydia, Rock and Sn0w. I don’t recommend you to install them all at once, because that may cause problems. Install them one at a time then reboot and then second one.
Step Six. Sn0w is the unlock we all were waited from a long. Just hit the sn0w button and the magic will happen itself. After the process enjoy your unlocked baseband 5.11.07

Fix AFC2 Error : Blackra1n doesn’t adds the afc2 support to your jailbreaked iPhone. iPhone browser, iFunbox, Diskaid etc uses the afc2 service to access the file system and allow the transfer of files such as Winterboard themes, NES ROMs or eBooks to the iPhone. In short you can’t access root partition of your drive with desktop clients.

@Adri11898 We recommend you to upgrade to 3.1.2, you can backup your iPhone Contacts, SMS, Notes & Call History and restore after 3.1.2 jailbreak. Also if you have 3GS then submit your SHSH to Cydia to secure your unlock in future. To save SHSH just navigate to Cydia Homepage and hit the “make my life easy” button.

@Azza Don’t look at iTunes during the process, it’ll reboot itself. Now press and hold both power and home button until your phone turns off completely, after 2 minutes start the process again with cool mind and read the instructions above 2-3 times.
@Rodeny Launch the blackra1m app from your home screen and hit the Sn0w button to unlock your phone.
I can confirm that I have NO wifi connection anymore after the Jailbreak and unlock on a clean 3.1.2 update and fresh baseband on 3Gs. Anyone else have that issue?

I have rerun the process. Installes the af2c – but it still will not find any service on Orange just says searching.

@Azza No AFC2ADD is to patch your sync services. Look there should be blackrain icon on your iPhone. Open it and the click on Sn0w button. You need to have a working WiFi Connection to install the Blacksn0w. Check Step 4 and Step 5 above.

@Everyone To fix broken WiFi Reset network settings, then reboot and WiFi will work again
I have wifi problem as well. Resetting network settings fixes it…but it breaks again on a reboot and you have to reset network settings again.

@Dhaval Yeah a clean install to 3.1.2 is a good option for you, before attempting the jailbreak read this guide 2-3 times.

@Baz These aren’t custom firmwares these are stock firmware from the house of Apple.
If resetting the network settings doesn’t fix the WIFI issue, try again but choose “reset all settings” instead. That worked for me (3.1).

Not working for me, tried 3 times but still fails. Running Win7 and tried twice with that, then tried XP SP2 compat mode but all it does is get stuck in recovery mode with BlackRa1n saying “Running” now I have to restore my phone for the 3rd time!!! What am I missing or is it that it just won’t work with win7???

Sooo, I have all this working. I did have the wifi problem, but reset settings worked.
My question is what about the rebooting? When I reboot the phone it goes into recovery mode and i have to plug it in to run blackra1n again. Then it works. is this called “tethering”….and is it always going to be like this or is there a way around it?
BTW – people make sure ya donate to George…I paid 30 bucks for a program that said it could do this and did not do it and now they not only wouldn’t offer me support, there’s no contact number to get my money back. So, I am soooo grateful for this freeware.

So I used blackra1n to jailbreak my 3G running 3.1.2 (I had accidentally upgraded to 3.1 a couple weeks ago.) It jailbroke fine (I was stuck on the recovery ‘no good sim’ screen, but it worked with my tmobile sim and jailbreaking.
So I open the blackra1n app from my phone, and I have no wifi. I have reset my network settings and all settings and rebooted several times. It is not recognizing wireless networks, even when I attempt to put them in manually.
Please help!

Read that but my iPhone was supplied back in August, so not all iPhones can be broken, and I see I’m not the only one. A friend got his about 4 weeks ago and JBroke it fine.
I ran the program and installed cydia and Sn0w. It doesn’t seem to be unlocking for some reason. AT&T works fine, but when I put a T-Mobile SIM card in it says “No Service”. This leads me to believe the unlock is not working correctly. I have tried this on a MAC and on Windows 7 both with the same results. I even restored my iPhone back to the factory setting prior to trying again. Any ideas on how to correct this?

@Linsay – Yes that is called tethering and there will not be a fix for a non tethered version till it gets fully cracked so for now u will have to use tethering till then. Best option would be to not restart ur Iphone and if u do make sure u have a laptop and iphone cable with u.
@Ken – Unlocking does work properly, try doing all the Steps as seen above. Maybe ur not doing something right.
@nick – Try Holding down the power and home button for 30 seconds, after release the power button while still holding on the home button for 3 seconds. That should put it in DFU mode and from there just do a fresh restore from Itunes (Of coarse u have to have to have ur Iphone plugged into ur computer from the start).

I unlocked my phone, version 3.1.2 in seconds, and I have no experience in any kind of jailbreaking so I was thrilled. My wifi worked fine, but when I am not in a wifi area I get a message that says “could not acctivate cellular data network” I tried the suggestions listed here and reset my network settings and then after that didn’t work I reset all settings, neither worked. Then i downloaded the restore file, and started all over again, first it said Searching, later it said, no connection, and now it gives the name of the carrier but the “connection bar” is at zero.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

For those having issues with their wi-fi after jailbreak and unlock of the firmware 3.12 using blackra1n and blacksn0w this is how to enable wi-fi functionality again.
1. go to settings, select airplane mode and turn it on.
2. proceed to general and select reset, select RESET NETWORK SETTINGS.
3. wait for the phone to restart, the wifi functionality should now be restored.
Resetting network setting without putting on airplane mode does not compleletly restore network settings, as some of the features are still in use while resetting in while cellular network is on.
Hey guys, so i did the jailbreak, plus unlock process, i get no SERVICE.
i dont understand, i’ve re-tried it over 30 times and over and over, no hope.
this morning, after installing black snow, i installed ultrasn0w, which gave me service for a few seconds, but not right away. i thought it was a failure, when i just put the phone in my pocket and left for college. i felt it vibirate. i was over excited, but the signal was gone again.
maybe this can help someone make a new fix, or find a solution to the problem.

Thanks guys for the list of instructions, I’ve got the 3gs 3.1.2 5.11.07 JB with no issues. Only thing I can’t get working is You Tube. I get a connection error every time. I know it’s minor but it bugs me a little.

Imty, your device has the new boot rom and because of this, each time you reboot, you must connect your device to your PC and run Blackra1n again. This is the only work-around at the time for device with baseband 5.11.07.
Is there supposed to be a separate icon that appears for snow is does it just install?
Is it ’safe’ to upgrade a 3GS from 3.1 (BB 05.11.07) to 3.1.2 using iTunes? Are there any hidden nasties that would prevent me from JB/Unlocking if I do this?

Now i can install apps from apple store and also I can the blackrain icon in my iphone. but I have no wifi. How to unlock it without wi fi. I googled and got to know using diskaid we can do. Bt when i use disk aid i cannot open root directory of iphone as it says your phone is not jailbreaked. How to proceed. Please help

BlackSn0w is really teh best jailbreak and unlock system. After sveral weeks of struggling and trial from any other system, my 3GS with 3.1 software and new baseband updated by mistake on iTunes could not be saved.
IN a couple of minutes, thanks to BlackSn0w, everything is back including the unlock.

The problem is that because the baseband is 3.11.2 the phone us data locked and there is not setting for me to choose the network so that I can acess the Internet on tmobiles edge network when there us no wifi. i tried jailbrake & unlock new 3gs which already comes on 3.1.2 everything work fine, after i switch it off and switch on it’s showing me the usb cable on the phone screen, if i connect to itune. itune says iphone is on recovery mode it give option to restore
if i restore it goes to factory setting
if i run blackra1n again when it’s on recovery mode it comes to normal
it mean when i switch off and switch on phone loss all data
please help me i tried 5 different new 3gs which comes with 3.1.2

I just got an iPhone 3gs from apple 1day. I jailbreak and unlock the iphone 3gs with Blackra1n every thing work fine. I installed cydia and reboot it stuck on Itunes screen. I did the jailbreak on my Iphone 3G and it worked perfectly. After that I did my cousins phone, everything was running along great until it was installing blacksnow. It got stuck on installing blacksnow so I forced the phone to reboot by pressing the power and the home button. Now when I turn it on it stays in the apple screen, sometimes a circle in the middle shows up and it seems to be loading something. Then it gets stuck and after a while it moves again. Finally it seems to reboot itself and the same process happens. Can someone help me, has this happened before?

Upgraded my iPhone 3G with 3.1.2 (BB-5.11.07) on iTunes and jailbreak and unlocked using Blackra1n(RC3), everthing goes well but my phone doesn’t shows any network. all the time No Signal….its shows the carrier name as O2 even though there is no sim card inserted.
Tried all the procedure 2-3 times but no luck same thing again…tried using the Fuzzyband as well to downgrade baseband but it doesnt support 5.11.
Please help me to solve this….thx in advance…

Guys. The blackra1n is very simple. but yes it has some bugs. the network thing is strange, but i do think that is an apple problem, theres a thread about it on there site for non hacked phones. also, the blackra1n does say. if you let the battery go beyong charge and phone turns off. you have to boot from the blackra1n program. also. it does say you tube may not work properly. these are the chances we take for the goodness we get out of it. And last. I have succeded in unloacking/jailbreaking, i have the netwrok bug. phone hasnt died yet, but i will let it die tonight, My problem. which i only seen one post, was, I cannot connect to the itunes/app store. I cant log in with my mobile me details to get at the app store or download music(like anyone pays for that)
so thats just another thing that this hack is messing with. and hope our buddy over at blackra1n can figure it out. Cheers

I tried ur blackra1n software to unlock and jailbreak my iphone which is on O2 career and verion 3.1.2 the jailbreak worked gr8 but I am not able to unlock the network. It says “iphone waiting for activation this may take some time” Can you tell me what is the possible reason for this error and what should i do to get it unlocked.

Hi, I was on At&t (NewYork) and I would like to unlock my iphone 3G on 3.1.2, for use in India.
I downloaded blackra1n successfully on my iphone but couldnot go to the next step as I am already in India and had suspended my At&T number before leaving New york. How can I install cydia, sn0w and rock as i do not have a service at the moment on my iphone.
I plan to insert a sim card here in India.

I have iphone 3gs 16 GB with firmware 3.1 out of the box.
I upgraded to official 3.1.2 firmware, then i did jailbreak using geohot blackra1n tool, and followed by unlock using blacksn0w from the phone itself.
when my iphone battery vanished, my iphone refused to start up when recharging. and refuse to restore to apple official firmware v 3.1.2 giving me error (1013).
i ran the blackra1n windows exe file again, and my iphone opeend successfully but with the following problems:
No Service
No Wifi
when i checked the “about” i found that the following information are “unknown”
IMEI
ICCID
Modem Firmware

Hi. Have 3G iPhone on 3.1.2 on TMo used Balckra1n and everything works except MMS and tethering–even the settings are hidden–and no icon/dot in Messages app. How to unhide the settings? (resets and turning off does not help.) Thanks.
in on a iphone 3gs 3.1.2 , firm ware 05.11.07. followed tutorial to the letter and got Snow off blackrain with cydia. however when i put in sim card from other carrier it just comes up with “different sim detected please connect to itunes” however i have signal “i recived a text at this point” . but i cant use anything on the phone unless i put in my rogers sim again. anyone got any ideas. thanks for your time.

No matter how many ways or times I try to Jailbreak/Unlock my brand new Iphone 3GS, I get the msg “Different SIM detected: Please connect to ITunes” when I put my TMobile SIM in. Here’s the steps:
1. I used blackrain per the instructions without ITunes running. I hit make it rain. Everything looks good like its down loading.
2. I enable my wireless on the phone and launch the blackrain icon on my phone. I install both Cydia and snow. Everything appears to install ok
3. I swap my ATT sim with my TMobile sim and get the above error msg. I can make and receive calls with the TMobile sim in. The weird thing is when I receive a call, it is as if my contacts are loaded because the persons name appears that is calling me. It also recognizes that it is a TMobile sim by the Tmobile at the top left hand corner of the phone.
4. The extra things I have done to try to make it work.
a. Restore the iphone using ITunes then started the process all over again.
b. Repeated the process with 3G enabled and disabled
c. Tried to install Blackrain with either the Sim cards (Tmobile or At&T) and with none
d. After install of snow & cydia with At&t sim, removed Sim, did reboot then installed Tmobile sim
Here are the particulars on my phone: Version 3.1.2 (7D11); s/n 32946 (1st 5 #s); model MC123LL; firmwre: 05.11.07

the same problem happened to me.
I just bought a brand new 3gs iPhone, come automatically with the system 3.1.2 and 5.07.11
when I tried to jailbreak and unlock it with blackra1n, the process went pretty well at first, the geo pic came out in the iPhone, but when the apple logo popped, it just start back to the “connect to itunes” pic and it wont reboot after that. I got stuck there.
I have been trying this for over than 10 times.

But it seems that whenever I want to turn off my iphone, the screen shows that I have to connect it to itunes and is not responding at all unless i connect it to itunes. Additionally, I have to re-run again whenever I turn it on. It’s a hassle for me to do it all over again. Can you explain me why is it like that and a suggestion for me to avoid this disruption again. Hope to get a respond from you soon. Thank You.
I too am having the same problem. I have also jail broken my phone and everything is working just fine. However, whenever I reboot the phone, the phone goes into a recovery mode requesting me to connect to the iTunes, which is refusing to recognize it. In any case, I ran the blackrain again and it booted just fine.
I guess when you reboot the phone, just run the blackrain again.
I have an iPhone 3G which has been jailbroken by me since I first bought it. I’ve had to upgrade and rejailbreak multiple times. Now this blackra1n jailbroke it after the 3.1.2 upgrade but now I keep having connection problems. I can stay on it for an hour on email and/or myspace and/or safari and never lose connection. But if I set it down for more than 5 minutes during the day, when I go to get back into my mail or anything requiring internet, it pops up with no connection or failed to connect to server. I go to my settings>General>Network setting> and then turn 3G off and then back on and then it works. What gives? I’m bout to restore and rejailbreak at the expense of all my music because a freind played on my laptop and screwed it up and I had to restore it too, so my whole music library is gone. Now I will lose the remander of it thanks to whatever is causing my issue here.
if WIFI not working and Reset Network Settings forces you to restore:
Everytime I tried a Reset Network Settings, my phone would not come back up with blackra!n until I did a complete restore (THAT SUCKS). I believe I have the problem solved. Instead of doing a Reset Network Settings, have your phone completely running (not at the connect to itunes) and connected to your computer. Run blackra!n. It will completely reboot your phone and this time your wifi should be working!!!

Hey everyone, i ran the blackrain program and it jailbroke the phone fine. But when i go into blackrain it only shows cydia and rock. There is no snow for me to choose from and i need to unlock it for t-mobile. Does anyone know whats going on with that?

I can’t connect to Internet in blackrain. So I can’t install cydia icy or anythin. Is there any other way to install cydia on my jailbroken iPhone 3g. Blackrain says plz check your Internet connection.

I jailbreak my iphone 3Gs version 3.1.2 (7D11) with window Vista. Everything was fine after jailbreak. I can install cydia and rock via blackra1n. But every time I roboot my phone, I always see USB to iTunes screen. So, I have to run blackra1n.exe and click make it rain again. Only in this way, I can get my normal phone again. If not I must restore factory setting from iTunes. Help!! I like this JAILBREAK method very much, so easy and so simple.

but my 16GB iphone 3GS 3.1.2 FW work fine when i turnoff and star again this 16gb iphone it will boot completly normal no itune logo apear

as of 26/01/2010 there’s no way how to unlock your 3GS in O2 UK tried everything and the only sim card i can use in this phone is an Orange UK but 3G never works and as soon as i loose signal i have to put that sim card on another phone to pick up signal and put it back on 3gs that sucks i know but there’s no way how to unlock this phone in UK. i regret that i upgraded firmware

It’s not only you, every iPhone 3GS manufactured after week 42 has an updated version of iBoot which is not vlunrable to any jailbreak solution available at the moment. This is called tethered jailbreak mean you have to jailbreak iPhone every time you start the phone.
i have jailbreak and unlocked my iphone 3gs 3.2.1 with blackra1n. first it work well but when i roboot my iphone, the screen show the itune connection and it said iphone is in recovery mood. but i didn’t recovery . and then i ran blackra1n again. but it now failed and my iphone screen just show the picture of blackra1n and even i connect it to computer, the USB device not recognize.
what should i do?

Great tut. Will try it but first a really “dumb” question. Can I do the jailbreak in a brand new iphone, from another coutry, without having a SIM card? Probably a stupid question but all tutorials that I get from youtube and so have a carrier (hence SIM).

I tried jailbreaking my new Iphone 3GS 32g with firmware 3.1.2 (05.11.07) with blackra1n.
During jailbreaking my iPhone was stuck in recovery mode. I was trying many times to restart blackra1n. And also I did try to restore with iTunes to 3.1.2 ,it’s giving me every time the same message “This device isn’t eligible for the requested build”. So i stuck I recovery mode. Can u help me please, what I shoul do?

PLEASE HELP!!! I stupidly upgraded my 3G to 3.1.3 firmware. So obviously my unlocked phone was no longer unlocked. I did manage to then downgrade to 3.1.2 and jailbreak&unlock my phone with blackra1n again, obviously using sn0w to unlock, but all i see now is “No service” where “orange” used to be and i used to get real good signal
any ideas what i can do??? I have tried things like ultrasn0w too and i get the same thing.

okay.. i updated my itunes, X: && i didnt know that if i did then my phone would lock.. how do you unlock it? the screen is just an icon of itunes && the usb. and slide for emergency.. idk how to unlock it.. ><

Hello Vinay, I need a clarification. I have an iPhone 3G 8GB and im on 3.0 Firmware with baseband 04.26.08. I read on some other website not to upgrade to 3.1.2 because it will upgrade my baseband and i wont be able to unlock. They said i need a precooked firmware. From what im reading from your website is that now it’s possible to upgrade to the official 3.1.2 firmware and still be able to unlock? Or will I still need a precooked firmware 3.1.2? i was using my 3gs & each time i need to restart it so i need to use black rain. till the iphone didnt start at all a day, so trying to restore to 3.1.2 in itunes usint the shift + restore but its no restoring.
tried the redsnow 9.0.2 but not worked.

Hey guys, I was wondering, if I have a locked Iphone 3gs, and it is asking me for a valid SIM, if I jailbreak it in order to unlock it, will I be able to unlock without a valid SIM card or do I have to have one? Because from what i can see i cant go to menus without the sim inserted. Thanks.

I have a 3GS that I jailbroke using blackra1n on OS X. Every now and then it will either crash or freeze, and when it resets I need to run blackra1n on it again to get it to function. If I were to purchase a cheap Windows netbook to carry with me, would I be able to run blackra1n from it to get my phone working, or would I have to be using OS X?

Okay, so i got an iphone 3G second hand off my uncle. Yeah, whatever call me poor, but 2nd hand iphone > no iphone.

I jailbroke my 3Gs. It’s one of the ones that you have to run Blackra1n every time you reboot it. The phone locked up today and i cannot get it to jailbreak after restarting and running Blackra1n now. I tried it on my laptop and deaktop to be sure it wasnt the computer. I was able to install one of the apps from cydia before to backup all packages to itunes and even restored it once and it worked. but now it seems to want to force me to update to 3.1.3 and i will not do it! Any work arounds anyone knows of to try?
Right now when i run Blackra1n it loads the pic and i hear the disconnect sound. I get the pop up box that says it had done the jailbreak but it just sits there for 3 or 4 minutes till it reboots to the i-tunes restore screen instead.
