Jailbreak your iPhone iPod 3.1.2 with Blackra1n

Finally GeoHotz released the first jailbreak for iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS with 3.1.2 firmware out of box. The 600kb utility is also capable of jailbreaking the iPod family including iPod touch 3G. Even the ipt3 is supported, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n. blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Right now blackra1n is available for windows only and a mac version may be available very soon.
Warning : BlackRa1n will not hacktivate. This means that if you are not with an Apple approved carrier your iPhone will not be activated by BackRa1n. Hopefully, hacktivation and full ipt3 support will be added in a future update. Blackra1n is a jailbreak only tool don’t use this if you want to preserve your baseband. The updated pwnage tool for 3.1.2 will be available very soon.

Tips for Blackra1n users :

Before applying Blackra1n reboot your phone once to avoid recovery mode errors.

Windows 7 users run it in compatibility "Windows Vista SP2" and run it as administrator.Alternatively move to a machine with Windows Vista already installed.

Don’t install Cydia+Icy+Rock or you may need to delete /var/lib/dpkg/status and reinstall Cydia alone. In final step just install Cydia alone and you’ll be fine.

Last but not least if you relies on Ultrasn0w then stay away from blackra1n and wait for pwnage tool.

Step by Step guide :
Step One : Restore and activate your iPhone to 3.1.2 if you haven’t updated to 3.1.2, warning again blackra1n is for those who are on official carrier like AT&T if you relies on Ultrasn0w hen don’t use blackra1n just wait for pwnage tool.
Step Two : Connect your iPhone/iPod to computer and launch the blackra1n.exe you downloaded earlier.
Step Three : Hit the large make it rain button, and wait for your device to entering in Recovery mode. The conventional recovery mode screen is replaced by GeoHotz photo like the screenshot below.
Step Four : Blackra1n will reboot your device itself once the process completes, after the reboot you’ll notice a blackra1n app on your iPhone/iPod Home screen.
Step Five : Connect your device to WiFi network and launch the blackra1n app from home screen to install Cydia/ICY etc.
Step Six : After installing Cydia/ICY check them if they are working properly or no, if working fine then you can uninstall blackra1n from your springboard.

Alternative Method [VIA iSpazio]
1. Connect the iPhone to your computer, close iTunes and click on "Make It Rain" by blackra1n.
2. When the iPhone crashes in recovery mode, and blackra1n remains in "running", do not close BLACKRA1N and turn off the phone by clicking on Home + Power.
3. The program will tell you that the operation of Jailbreak has been completed but in reality it is not. At this point, then:
- Close Blackra1n;
- Re-open Blackra1n;
- Click on the button "Make it Rain
- Turn on your phone
The program should recognize the iPhone and completing the Jailbreak. [VIA iSpazio]

I have tried to do this for my third time with no success. I have followed the steps twice and methods mentioned by other people, such as

but it has not worked. Every single time it just goes to emergency screen, then soon later on it goes back to normal but without the blackra1n app.
I quit iTunes and turned my iPhone off, which worked fine, but in steps 1 to 6 it says to ignore iTunes, but to progress any further in the jailbreaking I have to click restore or something (iTunes always comes back, regardless of whether I close it or not).
I’m also not getting the Geo thingo special screen, always the apple icon. Could anybody offer any help to me as to why it isnt working? I’m using an iPhone 3GS that I got 2 days ago, with version 3.1.2(7D11) firmware and the regular base thing (5.0.7 or something, unsure).

I have an iPod touch and I tried blackra1n at least 10 times and it’s not working. I pressed make it rain and made sure iTunes was closed. And then it did the “connect to iTunes” thing an then it showed geohot’s picture. But I waited at least 20 minutes and it still didn’t reboot. It’s a 3rd generation 8 gig. Can someone advise me please. i have the iphone 3G with 3.1.2. I gave done all the steps above as mentioned. However when i restart my iphone, i receive the screen to connect my phone to itunes. I get stuck in the entering revover mode and the phone is setting on the itunes logo with the usb cable. I have did this process several times and never get past this screen or step. However, when i connect, itunes will pop up says it’s not compatable and when i open blackra1n program, it enters into my main screen again and everything looks ok. Is this normal? that means if i’m outside, i can nvr shutdown my iphone?
i followed all the instuctions, and then itunes said i had to restore my iphone and now it’s in emergency mode and i have no idea what to do!!!
Just as a follow in to my note above; I am in England so my phone is running on UK software, not US – would that make a difference?

I’ve got a 3G 16GB with the latest update but the guides above just aren’t working. I plug my phone in then I have tried running blackra1n both with my phone turned on and with my phone turned off (and with holding the home button while turning it on etc as mentioned above) numerous times; the pop up appears to say that the phone has been broken but my screen just stays black – no special pic or anything, it just stays black. If I turn it off then on again theres nothing new.

I used blackra1n and it wiped out my songs every hour. so i uninstalled cydia and blackra1n and it was fixed.

I have the same problem. After using blackra1n RC2 I finaly jailbroke my iphone 3G again. I can install Cydia and so on but I cannot install all of my (cracked) ipa’s I have on my PC. I have had them installed before on my 3.1 jailbroken iphone.

I am still having issues and I have restored my iphone 10 times and still counting. I have a iPhone 3G 16G. OS is Windows Vista. I have set Blackra1n to be windows vista compatible. I have even stopped all apple processes except apple mobile device. Do I need to do the power off and on routine? I have JB this phone be fore but I used redsnow and that was much easier than this!

I recently had an unlocked phone until i upgraded to 3.12 , now my screen is stuck with the Itunes image and usb cord on the screen.
What steps can I take to get this off and get my phone running back to normal. I have a tmobile card.

Jeff, to your question, after using blackra1n, install Cydia and look for the app called afc2add; after installing this you will be able to use ihpne browser (that is what I did)
Now I have a problem. I have iPod 1G with FW 3.1.2. JB with blackra1n with no problem, but I cannot install any of the applications that I had with the previous FW (3.1.1). Any ideas why? (these apps are cracked)
p.s. i already hav xp sp2 idk if im supposed to manually activated it or wat, and of so can any of u tell me how

this only wipes apps loaded outside of itunes. contacts and music is not changed. do a sync of the phone for safety. then use blackrain. any problems do a restore then do blackrain. ONLY install cydia and rock. DO NOT INSTALL ICY. icy creates problems.
I really need help please. I have tried countless times to jail-break my ipod touch but each and every time I see GeoHot and then the phone bricks after a while, leading me to have to restore. i installed blkrn with out any problems. i did install cydia, icy and rock at same time. only thing that doesn’t seem to work is catagories from cydia. how do i remove icy. will this help get catagories working. i can create folder install the app in folder see the icon in the folder, but icon doesn’t disappear from main menu. any ideas?
also cannot install cydelete to get rid of icy. maybe cydia is not working because of icy.
tried to install cydelete with cydia and icy and restart, still no icon for cydelete. both programs say it is installed, but no icon?

I was able to successfully jailbreak an iphone purchased at AT&T. It was running 3.1, 5.11 modem. I found that running Blackra1n in compatibility mode for windows vista sp2 (I run Windows 7), it would get stuck on Recovery. I tried running in compatibility for XP sp2, ran Blackra1n as administrator, and it worked. Installed cydia and it’s all good.
If vista sp2 doesn’t work, try running it in XP sp2 mode.

I jailbreaked my iphone 3GS using blackra1n after updating to 3.1.2. After jailbreaking it showed a message on my computer as Done!Wait for phone reboot. But after neither the phone rebooted or any other message. How long does it take to rebook after jailbreaking?
for those of you with iphone 3g that is having problems, what you need to do is reboot your phone after you update to 3.1.2, then run blackra1n as administrator and it will work
I was having the same problem where it suck in recovery mode and wont do anything, i had to restore my iphone 3 times and then i decide to reboot the phone and after rebooting and running blackra1n it works.

worked perfectly for me, im running Windows 7, put the .exe into XP SP3 compatibility mode and ran as administrator. No problems at all, woohoo
Lowca$h – update your iTunes, 8.2 isn’t supported, you need 9.x
Alternative method for 3G (the one from article did not worked for me):
- go until locked on recovery and blackra1n is “running”. Then press Home button for about 10-20 seconds until the face of George is shown. Then wait and after a next auto-reboot you’ll have your JB phone. Goog luck!
I’m having same proble as Jeremy. I tried to jailbreak on windows vista but always stuck at entering recovery mode.

I have done the jailbreak now for the 3rd time and it has successfully installed Blackra1n, all 3 times. However, I can not get Cydia or any of the other programs to install.
Cydia gets the follwoing error;

When I try to install ROCK or Icy, they look like they look like they install. They load and say something like wait for respring on sprinboard. Then the icon is placed on the phone, but it doesn’t work. I am only installing them one at a time, and not even all together, just trying to get one that will work so I can get started.
Now one more thing I need to mention, 3GS, and it is running the stock 3.1.2 software from Apple. For some rerason iTunes 8.2, will not let me choose a location to install custom 3.1.2 from. If that is the cause of these problems, let me know how to fix that issue.

i haven’t used this yet, but looking at all the recent comments, seems like the blackra1n is having sum problem ne? one more thing, if this works, can i use ultrasn0w version that is to comeout, for unlocking, or do i have to wait untill GeoHotz make sumthing to unlock the 3GS with new baseband…
Just wanted to say that Blackra1n worked on my 3gs 3.1. I didn’t update to 3.1.2.

I used blackra1n and it worked perfectly! I have a 3GS with 3.1.2 F/W and ran the JB from my laptop running Vista Home Premium SP2.
Those having problems may want to try a few things.
1) Make sure iTunes is not set to start automatically when your iPhone/iPod is connected.
2) Reboot your iPhone/iPod, before try to JB.
3) Make sure all other programs (in Windows) are closed. If necessary, reboot your PC first.
I didn’t have to go through any of these steps (iTunes doesn’t start auto), but if you are having problems, this is worth trying.
I figured it out… I put my phone into emergency mode first, then ran BlackRa1n and it Jailbroke in a few seconds.
Well I used Blackra1n to successfully jailbreak my out of the box 32 Gig 3GS that was on 3.1 and have change my themes, install Cydya etc. But, I cannot access the system directory using a browser. If I use IPhoneBrowser to try and open the system directory, a message reads “Program could not find the path system/library/audio/UISounds. have you sucessfully used jailbreak?

Ok the jailbreak went fine. Blackra1n installed on 3GS and is ready to go. I can not get Cydia to install. It keeps telling me that it timed out. Is there a way to fix this or get around to install Cydia?
I tried to install Icy, got the icon on the phone but the ap will not open.
Congrats on a great and simple jailbreak, this is the easiest that I have used ever. I do remember Cydia being hard to load the 1st time, but I can’t even get it on the phone.
Any suggestions or workarounds? I need Cydia to get the 3G unrestrictor for Skype.

I tried the blackra1n on my phone and I followed all the instructions to the T. I tried it on a Windows 7 computer using the compatibility mode as well as a Windows Vista SP2 computer, no luck. It would boot my phone into recovery mode and just sit there. I walked away from it and came back 10 min later and it was still running. I have now done it 5 times. Any suggestions?
i hade 3gs 3.0.1 by mistake i installed 3.1 now i upgraded to 3.1.2 and tryed blackra1n but it rebooted and i saw the image didnt see install cydia and the wirless plz help

I was using unltrasn0w previously and my phone was working fine, this is a 3GS, and upgraded to 3.1 then was unable to jailbreak, now i upgraded to 3.1.2

@Abuhawa @NewHere If you updates to 3.1.2 stock firmware your baseband will be updated so you can jailbreak with blackra1n but you’ll not ever use the ultrasn0w.
@Manish Try again with the run in administrator mode, to recover your phone from recovery mode just press and hold the home and power button for 15 seconds then leave the phone for 2 minutes then power on again and apply the blackra1n.
@Neelesh You updated your iPhone to 3.1 and your baseband updated from 04.26.08 to 05.11.07 and the current ultrasn0w is able to unlock Baseband up to 04.26.08 so my advise for you is to update to 3.1.2 and the follow the instructions above to jailbreak your phone. The unlock (ultrasn0w) may be available sooner or later!

I had iphone ( jailbroken) with os 3.0.
By mistake i have upgraded to os 3.1.
Now Itune is not able to activate since my sim is not supported by apple.
How can I overcome this problem ?.
I am ready to downgrad/restore it to OS 3.0, but my itune is giving me invalid sim error.

If you want to “preserve baseband”, does it mean that blackra1n messes up with the baseband and it’s no longer usable? That i can’t use the modem if i use blackra1n?

Just curious, I am using officially unlocked iphone 3gs which come preloaded with 3.1 It is fine if I use Blackra1n just to unlock? I am not using the official carrier though. Does it make it locked if I jailbreak using Blackra1n?

@ Nicholas iphone browser and ifunbox etc uses the afc2 service to access the file system and allow the transfer of files such as Summerboard themes, NES ROMs or eBooks to the iPhone. I haven’t jailbreaked mine with blackra1n because i also need to preserve my baseband. I can’t help you at the moment because mine isn’t blackra1ned. But i’ll mail you the solution after digging the forums. I hope you entered a vaild e-mail id with the comment.

This will jailbreak your phone but you will have to use the original carrier it came with i think , mine works
@Charith You can update to 3.1.2 then blackra1n to jailbreak, but you can’t unlock because your baseband is update to 5.11.07 All you can do is to jailbrek now and wait for unlock in future.
@Leo Because you already have a 5.11.07 you can update to 3.1.2 then blackra1n for JB just like the Charith
