iPhone Stuck on Apple Logo After Installing an App from Cydia

18 October 2009 by Vinay 48 Comments

Some times after installing an App from Cydia when you respring/reboot the device it stuck at the apple logo, iTunes will recognize that “an” iPhone is connected to it, but it wont identify the iPhone as being your iPhone. Every time you turn it on it goes back to the apple logo. Here is the little fix hat will help you to fix this problem. First of all download and install iPhoneBrowser. When you run iPhoneBrowser, the software might say that no iPhone is found. If that is the case, than disconnect and reconnect your device and iPhoneBrowser will recognize it. Once iPhone browser recognizes your phone follow the following steps and you’ll be fine.

iPhone Stucked on Apple Logo

  • Navigate to /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.SpringBoard.plist and backup com.apple.Springboard.plist to your PC.
  • Download and install EditPadLite from EditPad Lite – Free Text Editor for Windows . Than rename com.apple.Springboard.plist tocom.apple.Springboard.plist.txt
  • After changing the file extension form .plist to .txt, open it wit EditPadLite ( Wordpad or Notpad wont work ) and edit the file by removing the the offending key in the DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES

EXAMPLE:

<dict>
<key>DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES</key>
<string>/Library/Frameworks/SpringBoard.framework/SpringBoard.dylib:/Library/xxxx/xxxx</string>
</dict>

to

<dict>
<key>DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES</key>
<string></string>
</dict>

    Any chance you have a Mac version of iPhoneBrowser?

    Thanks for the tut. I’ve been caught in the “stuck apple” a few times and had to restore the firmware to get out of it. This can save me much time.

    But I think it would be handy to add to the tutorial that, after editing the plist, you have to:
    - change the edited file’s extension back from .txt to .plist
    - copy the edited .plist file back to your iPhone

    Or am I wrong here?

    X2 on the Mac version!
    This totally sucks, my phone’s been like this for days after a cydia update and I really don’t want to restore it and start all over….again!

  • smoke said:

    How the hell is this supposed to work if the phone never makes it past the apple logo????

  • digitalslavery said:

    @smoke,

    Plug your iphone cable into your phone but NOT the computer, now while holding the Home button plug your iphone cable into your computer and continue to hold down the Home button, it could take up to 90 seconds for the phone to go into recovery/restore mode. Once the screen comes on you can let go of the home button and then you should be able to restore it from there.

    Don’t Panic!!! If you are patient, you will have your phone working in about 15 mins. And i’m not talking about a restore, I mean “just how it was before it went to the apple logo”. I have been through this at least 10 times. With more than one iPhone, and with many different firmwares.

    1. Hard reset. (hold down home & power button till phone turns off)
    2. Open up iTunes on your pc/laptop.
    3. Hook your phone up to your computer with USB cable.
    4. Wait to see if iTunes recognizes your phone. (iTunes will sound if so, and then you will not need anything else, it’s booting up)
    5. If it doesnt recognize it, unplug your phone and hard reset again.
    6. Try hooking up your phone to wall charger.
    7. Repeat steps 1-6 until it boots up.

    I have NEVER had to enter DFU mode and restore my phone. I know it sounds repetitve and time consuming…. but, if you are patient, you will have your phone back how it was in the first place vs. going through everthing all over again.

    Cheers! And good luck

    Here it is…. “1 DAY” after writing my last post about how to fix an iPhone that’s stuck on the apple logo/boot up. I was downloading a game via appcake. I left it running in the background, and began looking for a new dialer from Cydia. I saw iSmart Dialer and began to download it. ONCE AGAIN, my iphone was stuck on the boot up/apple logo. Apparently donwnloading multiple things at one time is not wise. I have learned my lesson. But to end my sob story, I did nothing but use the same tactic that i posted yesterday. And… TADAH
    i’m back up and running again. It did take about 20-30 mins. But I was never worried. Cuz like i said before, it will work. Just be patient and give it time. Your phone may get hung up while rebooting. But resetting and powering up from multiple power sources have always worked for me.

    If you have any questions regarding this matter, you can reach me via email. I don’t mind helping out.

    B-LuV is right. this is my 2nd time i’ve had to go through this with my iphone. the first time it crashed because i was downloading multiple 10+MB apps through 3g and texting at the same time. i lost all of my contacts because i had just upgraded my laptop to windows 7 and didn’t sync my phone. this time i found this page, read the comments, and spent about 30 minutes going back and forth from my laptop to my wall charger. just hard shut down. then plug the phone in to your usb port and let it automatically boot the phone. i was beginning to believe bluv was just messing with people to get them to waste time…but then all of a sudden i heard the computer beep and i noticed itunes icon bouncing up and down on my dock!!! and it booted up like he said it would. and if it hadn’t worked, i’d have had to wait til monday so i could restore from my pc. anyway, thank you b-luv.

    -Adam

    p.s. i know it gets frustrating, but be patient, it really does work. no restore, no rejailbreaking, no reinstalling apps.

  • adam said:

    i forgot to say why it crashed this time. i was tethering from the iphone to my new macbook pro, downloading about 600+MB from apple update, and it stopped. i looked at my phone and noticed some texts had came in through biteSMS. i couldn’t get the phone to lock, couldn’t get it to unlock. rebooted and then found the infinite apple logo. thanks again b-luv.

  • its said:

    Hey.. Can you tell me how much time to keep it connected to PC and to wall charger..

    I have been trying for last 30 min and its not working :(

  • adam said:

    well, it happened again last night. tried for 2 hours and gave up. tried more today and just had to restore. it really did work once though. oh well, guess i gotta wait for the 3.1.3 jailbreak now.

    I have found what seems to be what really makes this work. I was just doing an update from Cydia and it had about 4 updates/upgrades. After doing so, it had the blue bar at the bottom that prompted “respring device”. After i pushed the button it seemed as though it was working and the progress icon(spinning circle)just kept spinning…. for minutes. So, I had to reboot it. Confident as i usually am (do consider that I try any, and everything that Cydia has to offer, if i like it, i keep it, if i dont, i remove it) Once again i was stuck at boot-up. What I did this time was go through steps 1-5. after that, I held down power and home(while the phone is OFF), until it booted up, and then booted OFF again. Then waited about 30 seconds and THEN plugged it back into my p.c. and it booted up within about 20 seconds. I hope this helps any and all who tries it. PLEASE UNDERSTAND that different 3rd party apps do different things to your iPhone/operating system. You may have installed something that i may not have, in which is causing problems.

    I hope this helps!

    Let me konw if you have any questions

    My 3GS is jailbroken with blackra1n on 3.1.2. It ran fine for weeks, and this weekend, it randomly locked up. I restarted it the manual way by holding the power button and home button until it shut down and started again. It got stuck on the apple icon. I fooled around restarting manually, and waiting for it to boot, trying to be patient with it the entire night. Later that night I plugged it into a bose dock and let it charge until the next morning. It worked. Half-way through the day, I lost signal so I thought a regular restart would fix it. Again it got stuck on the apple icon. I’ve let it load for hours, manually restarted it, let it load, and I’m not sure if the battery’s dead because it randomly shows the low battery screen and powers off. I’ve tried everything, and although I can get to the restore screen on itunes, I’d prefer not to, just because I don’t want to lose everything from my last sync. I’m just wondering if any of you kept getting the battery icon screen? Should I let it try and load without a power source until it dies and try charging it again? I’ve tried nearly everything up til this point. I’m really not wanting to restore, and I know you guys don’t want to continue to repeat the process of getting it to restart without restoring, but anything at this point would be greatly appreciated!

    wow… it really does work.

    man after reading this article like 5-6 times (honestly) i have beginning to have doubts… but its worth trying right? anyway it will just waste few minutes of your time if it wont work. it wont even harm your phone.

    @B-Luv

    sorry man if i have doubts at first because i was trying to get the logic of having the phone get back to its normal phase while doing your tips. well you have to do it to believe it…

    after trying steps 1-6 “twice” it did boot up! wow i was so relieved!IT DID WORK for me!

    it all started when i installed OpenSSH. installation was completed without any errors but when i tried to use the wireless, it didn’t find any access points. What i did is turn off the phone at first, it boots up but has the same result… “no wireless access point was found”. then i tried restarting it from reset option by resetting network connection… when it restart it just stuck in the apple logo….

    good thing i found this thread i was supposed to do a restore and do a JB tomorrow. but still don’t have an idea if its going to work.

    anyhow i’m just giving my feedback… THANKS AGAIN B-Luv!!!!

    oooh yeah, 1 thing i just notice is all of my save wireless AP was removed. but its better than having to restore and start everything from scratch…

    I was installing mms for my iphone and the instructions said to reset the network settings, which I did. Then I got stuck at the apple logo. B-Luv, your method does not seem to be working for me. I’ve been following those steps patiently. I thought my final resort was to restore it; I have an iphone 3GS 3.1.2 jailbroken and unlocked by the way. My SHSH was stored on Cydia, but when I tried to shift restore to 3.1.2 it said the firmware was ineligible. Can anyone help please?

  • wairean2005 said:

    I am having the same problem as Jerm. I only tried to get mms to work with my t-mobile iphone 3gs 3.1.2 and now it’s stuck on apple logo.

    I haven’t done a back up and I really don’t want to just restore.

    should I leave it plugged in and wait? Thanks

    Well, I did exactly as instructed, but now my iPhone is in safe-mode. Is there a way for me to get out of this mode? I don’t get the pop-up saying which gives me a choice to respring my iPhone to go back to normal mode.

    having the same problem with my jailbroken/unlocked on T-mobile 3gs. got home today and found my wifi wasnt working so i did a reset network settings and now im stuck and the reset method is not working for me.

  • irishblue said:

    dphizzle, got the same problem as you. Found my wifi wasn’t working and reset my network settings. Got stuck at this reset loop. Restoring will bring it to auto-update to 3.1.3. Am trying B-Luv’s method now.

  • B-Luv said:

    Guys, I am seeing a pattern here. The pattern that I see is that unlocked iPhones operating via T-Mobile are having problems with wi-fi. The majority of people who contact me get their phones up and running again. The minority are using T-Mobile for their service provider. I had T-Mobile when I first got my JB iPhone, and had this problem. And my only solution was to restore. But, it’s better than your phone being an expensive paper weight.

    Good luck to you all!!! I know how helpless you feel in this situation. If you are using AT&T, you “SHOULD” have no problems using my method.

    Cheers!!!

    hi
    just want to share my experience and at the same time thanks B-Luv and everybody who contributed as well.It all started with rock extensions i just wanted to delete every folder that is related to it so found on the net and went to /library/ and found Rock extensions folder, deleted it and nightmare came.Cydia crash and i did a reboot thats where i was stuck at apple logo.At first nothing happen after plugging usb after a few mins it actually will connect.Using iphone explorer located the file and edited with Editpad lite the only diff is i did not find the string mention but actually saw /Applications/Library/RockExtensions/RockExtensions.dylib so i went ahead to delete the whole thing and guess what did a reboot n it was alive again!so lesson is if u got trouble with rock just be cautious of wat u delete.

    Hi
    I had the similar problem last week when i tried resetting my network settings since wifi on my 3GS was not functioning. I tried a lot of methods to get my phone into its original state but of no luck. Then i first let the battery on the phone die and then left it for one night. Next morning i kept the phone on charging and then did nothing, the phone came back to life in about 2-3 hours. However, the wifi was not working and then i re-jailbreaked it and then my phone is working fine. Do let me know in case anyone is having problems on this.
    Tks

    Hi Swordjonny
    Last night when I found my wi fi not working i reset my network settings, and since then I am stuck with apple logo. I tried everything but all in vain. I even tried to fix it by iphonebrowser but it is not able to detect the phone while itunes is able to detect it in recovery mode.
    The 3gs phone is JB so I don’t want to restore it. I will try to follow what you did, is there a way by which you can drain the battery quite fast? since the battery was 100% when this problem happened.

    I will be obliged if you can provide some more help.

    Wow!!

    You saved me tons of frustrating work to recover,

    my 3GS was stuck at apple logo after working fine for months..

    I read your post so I tried to connect it to iTunes and then wall charger and again..

    At first iTunes recognized the phone and even started syncing (still with apple logo :) and never got beyond backing up..

    So I tried connecting it to wall, the iTunes, and on the 3d try the phone came alive with iTunes and works perfect!!

    Jailbreaking is not for faint hearted .. :)

    So, I have been trying this reboot, restore thing. Two days, half an hour or more each time, nothing. Is there thing else in the steps, that if done wrong would cause it not to work? If I can’t get it working in another day or so, I am going to just do a full restore. But it sucks to lose pictures of the kids I took before this crash happened.

    Thank you SOOOOO MUCH!!! To all that appreciate my fix/suggestions for this heartbreak of an error that your iDevice may have caused you. I hope that you all are enjoying your iThings again. ;P

    I have been helping about 60-100 different people with this problem via email. I don’t mind doing so WHAT-SO-EVER!!!

    What I “wish” I could do is:
    Go back and edit my first two posts and imply that you need to keep your iPhone/iPod/iPad hooked up to your computer/wall charger/dock for at least 5 mins per each power source, then if it hasn’t done anything by then, immediately swith to the next. If you just keep it hooked up, you’re wasting your time.

    So give it 5 minutes per power source.

    Also, Most of the time mine will boot up with iTunes around approximately 45 mins. If I could go back to the first post that i made and change it from 15 mins to 45-an hour, i would have saved my self some time by answering peoples emails about how long they should leave it hooked up, but then again, i have another issue to address here.

    One last thing… If your iDevice is NOT “stuck” on the apple boot-up logo, and you have the issue of the phone showing the apple logo, then a constant respring (circular spinning object), in which your phone just reboots, then shows white apple, then reboots….. THIS METHOD WILL NOT WORK FOR YOU!!!

    Once again… Best of Luck to you all who have this problem/shitty feeling in your stomach. I know how it feels. And that’s why i even posted my email address online. I wouldn’t wish this upon my worst enemy.

    this is simply awesome. I had to tweak it to my situation. But I have done it. Finally. You are my hero today Vinay!

    I had to implement this before restarting, because the bug that I had wouldn’t let me past the Apple Logo into any kind of restoring.
    The thing is, you will have to change the thing back, copy it back onto the iphone, then restart. It will go past the logo, you will hear a blip from iTunes, that it has detected your phone. Afterwards, change everything back to normal. Voila, you will have a working phone.

    THANK YOU!

    Does anyone have a solution for this without the need to restore it??

    This is really painful!

    B-Luv,

    U R the Shhhhhiiiizzzzznit!!!!!!!

    I had my 3.1.3 spirit JB iphone just about where i wanted it. I saw that Rock was showing that I had a Status Notifier. I never had any problems with SN so I said, what the hell and when it can to doing its “soft reboot” all hell broke loose. Black screen white apple. I downloaded a free .plist editor, opened Iphone explorer, navigated to /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.SpringBoard.plist. I was looking for anything that said Status Notifier being that it was the last thing I installed. But NOOOOOOOOOOO not that easy. The above instructions say look for DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES. I have no idea what that means but in English i guess it mean the f’dup file below. So I deleted everything between the string. And WOW no more restoring for the 1000th time. Now will say, I backedup everything with pkgbackup and synced my phone before this happened and I think thats how I was able to have all my packages and sources BUT my categories were not active and neither were my themes. BUT WHO CARES – I didnt have to RESTORE!!!!!!
