Enable Tethering on iPhone 3G 3GS on 3.1.2 Firmware

21 October 2009 by Vinay 27 Comments

Last week Musclenerd released two bsdiff patches to patch the CommCenter of your 3.1.2 iPhone 3G, 3GS to enable Internet tethering. Patching the CommCenter is for advanced users only and it requires Mac OS, Terminal knowledge and Time. Thanks to Andre Sendowski to release the Cydia package for enabling the Tethering for iPhone 3G/3GS firmware 3.1.2 The process is as easy as 1-2-3 you needn’t to purchase like Wi App (9.95$) Just fire the Cydia and follow the following steps.

Step 1. First start Cydia and add "iphone-notes” Repo with following.

apt.iphone-storage.de

Update : If you adding the repo throws an error then simply search iphone-notes and the repo package will appear to install itself.

Step 2. Now search for "tethering 3G – 3.1.2" or "tethering 3GS – 3.1.2" depending on the model of your device and install the package.

Step 3. Restart the iPhone and then browse to the site “www.unlockit.co.nz” with iPhone Safari browser to create a custom APN. Enjoy the tethering back to your phone.

Update : Our friend @Eagos created his own commcenter patch (actual patch) You can download here the complete instructions are also included on the page linked above. In Eagos words  “ The one in cydia is basically replacing commcenter with the patched one which can be a problem depending on the state of your phone. So i wrote a program that ensures nothing of that will happen while its patching. Automated steps are taken in all in one package. The program do not use bspatch. It verifies commcenter version and validates it, then it patches it. It backs up the file first, unloads the commcenter 2nd, patch, loads commcenter and then reboots.”

That repo does not work. I tried several times. Please check if it’s not a typo. Thank you.

@ iPhone3G Yup just updated a new way to add the iPhone-notes repo, search iphone-notes in Cydia and the repo package will appear to install itself.

    does this disable vvm?

  • Stephen said:

Well my VVM does not work with the profile installed, even after a network setting reset. Oh well, i just uninstall the profile and re-install when i need tethering.
The guy at http://www.unlockit.co.nz said there will be an AT&T profile that leaves VVM working up soon.

It does work, but you lose visual voicemail.

  • Srinivasa said:

This works really well ! The only downside is there is no visual voice mail. VVM comes back if you delete the profile that was just created. However the moment you sync your phone tethering goes away :-( Hopefully there will be a fix very soon …

I’m having a little trouble sorting this unlock/jailbreak info. I have an AT&Tlocked iPhone 3GS running version 3.1 (7C144) and modem firmware 05.11.07. I have resisted upgrading to the newest version of iPhone os. The iPhone has never been unlocked or jailbroken. Can I still jailbreak it? Unlock it? Use it as a modem for my laptop?

Can anyone please point me in the right direction? blackra1n? redsn0w? pwnage? thanks.

That does not work at all rather it messed up my phone. I was stuck on the boot screen logo for hours. Then I had to put my Phone into DFU mode and restore+rejailbreak+re-unlock it. Good thing I had all my data backup in my itunes.

    MyWi rox…try it from sinfuliphonerepo;
