How to Jailbreak Unlock iPhone 2G 3G OS 3.1 Custom Firmware
Dev team released Pwnage tool for jailbreaking and unlocking iPhone 2G, 3G with the 3.1 firmware. iPhone 3G users are advised to use Pwnage tool for retaining their current baseband. Most of iPhone user doesn’t owns a Mac and here is the guide to Jailbreak and Unlock your iPhone 2G/3G with firmware 3.1 All you have to do is download a custom firmware hotlinked below this custom firmware is created with Dev team Pwnage Tool that strips out the baseband update from the upgrade.
Note : Read the following before getting in to business.
- This guide is for those who pwned their phone last time, if you are not sure about your phone just restart it and check it boots with a custom logo(e.g. pineapple) or Apple logo. If boots with custom logo go ahead.
- Some people who redsn0wed their iPhone last time successfully restored their phone with custom firmware but 60% of Redsn0w user getting errors. So we don’t advise you to use this on previously Redsn0wed iPhones. However these firmware’s are baseband update free so you can try these at you own risk. Please read the Update Section below
- Read this guide twice or thrice before trying anything. If you have any doubt post a comment below, we’ll try our best to reply you as soon as possible.
- If you already updated your iPhone 3G to 3.1 non pwned or Apple firmware then you can’t enjoy UltraSn0w anymore.
- For iPhone 2G follow first four steps and for iPhone 3G follow the whole procedure.
- During the restore if you get any error then put your phone in DFU mode and try again or you can also downgrade to 3.0 with in from DFU mode.

Step One : Download the custom firmware and extract to your desktop. These custom firmware are Jailbreaked and contains Cydia for using the full potential of jailbreaking.
Download iPhone 2G 3.1 Custom Firmware : Google is your F.R.I.E.N.D
Download iPhone 3G 3.1 Custom Firmware : Google is your F.R.I.E.N.D
Please do not ask links to custom IPSWs in your comments, because the software in them is copyrighted by Apple. For legal issues we can’t link you for modified custom firmware.
Step Two : if the files you downloaded have an extension .001 and .002. Then you need a special open source (free) software HJSplit to join those files. Download HJSplit to join both the files – HJSplit for Windows Computers and HJSplit for Macs here.
Step Three : Put your iPhone in Recovery mode by following instructions.
- Turn the device completely off and disconnect it from cable/dock.
- Hold down the home button.
- While holding down the home button connect to a computer with a cable (easiest) or dock.
- Keep holding down the home button until you see a connect-to-itunes screen You are now in recovery mode.
Step Three : Launch iTunes 8.2, hold the shift key and then hit Restore button. For Mac hold Option key on your Mac and then hit the restore button. Make sure to hit the restore button.In the dialog box that pops up, browse the downloaded custom firmware file and let iTunes do it’s job. Once the upgrade is finished you haven’t need to jailbreak it again since it was already jailbroken.
- If you get a 16XX or 21 error while restoring then follow the Update on bypass error 16xx below and re perform the restore process.
- If you need to unlock iPhone 3G then follow the unlock instructions below.

Thanks to Andrew for the tip, iH8sn0w release iREB 2.2 for those who getting error 16XX while restoring, download iREB 2.2 for Windows or Mac from here unzip the tool to desktop. To apply patch run the application select your iPhone or iPod then follow on screen instructions.
- Place Your Device into DFU mode by following instructions
- Connect your iPhone to your computer.
- Turn iPhone off.
- Hold power and home together for 10 seconds (exactly).
- Release power but keep holding home until the computers beeps (observed on a PC) as a USB device is recognized.
- A few seconds later iTunes should detect your iPhone.
- If the Restore Logo is present on the screen, you are in Recovery Mode, not DFU.
- Select Your Device in REB utility, it will take a few seconds to get a White and then a Red screen!
- Then you may Open iTunes and Restore to custom firmware.
In the patching process you need to put your phone in DFU mode so must check our previous article on Difference Between Recovery Mode and DFU Mode
Windows Vista and Windows 7 user note : Right Click > Properties > Compatibility Properties, Run it as Windows XP.

Step Five : Make sure to set up your wireless network settings on your iPhone 3G so you will be able to connect to the software repositories in Cydia. Now fire the Cydia app it may requires restart first time.
Step Six : Click on the Manage tab on the bottom menu bar. In the Manage tab, click on the Sources button in the middle. You will need to add the source to the yellowsn0w repo to utilize the soft unlock.
Step Seven : Click on "Edit" on the top right, then "Add" on the top left. In the URL, type: the following url without quotes “ http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com/ “. When you are done click "Done" .
Step Seven : Now click on the "Search" tab and type "Ultrasn0w" and install the app "Ultrasn0w" Once the Ultrasn0w is installed restart your iPhone and Wait for the slide to unlock screen and then wait 15 seconds more. If you don’t see the SIM card working, reinsert the SIM and wait another 10 seconds.If every thing goes fine then enjoy the firmware 3.1

Just a quick question; I have jailbroken my phone, used ultrasn0w to unlock it, but there is still no signal. Would this be the case if the phone was somehow “blacklisted”. I bought it cheap!!

Hey i’ve got the solution for problem (1600).
Just downgrade the iphone to 3.0 with DFU mode, jailbreak, add cydia and all that stuff and then upgrade the iphone with the custom firmware. It worked perfect with me. Good Luck!

ok i updated my iphone by mistake to 3.1 but i downgraded it to 3.0 n jailbroke it to atleast use it as a itouch. since we’re now able to unlock 3.1 can i upgrade again to 3.1 n follow this to unlock it???

Hi! I use Vista and I have an iPhone 2G and used redsn0w when I Jailbroke 3.0. I skipped 3.0.1 and waited for 3.1. Now, my iPhone doesn’t have the Pineapple logo, is it a necessity for your tutorial to work? Should I do this jailbreak now, or should I wait for redsn0w?

when i tried to join both files using hjsplit i only saw one of my ipsw files instead of 2 of them, any idea why?it showed that both files downloaded. im on iphone 3g by the way

If I download hese files and follow the instructions will it delete my cydia apps,tweaks.etc or erase everything off my phone like media downloaded apps and do I have to restore the phone before I do this? then select restore and select the costume restore firmware that you have downloaded
and restore it manually without DFU or recovery mode
and it was successful I tried on my original iphone

so i updated to the 3.1 software and i put in my at&t sim and it will not show any carrier… i have connected to itunes did a reset of all setting and still nothing. what did i do wrong? … i do have baseband 5.11.07 but that shouldnt matter if im using at&t .. should i do a restore of the custom firmware again?

Hi. I have upgraded my baseband to 5.11.07 and I cannot download it. Is it possible to downgrade to 2.0 firmware and use a turbosim? Does the turbosim have anything to do with the baseband?
or Can I load Fido iphone firmware to my iphone to accept my Fido sim?
Fido is a carrier, but the phone is from another carrier originally.

i have upgraded to 3.1 through iTunes and everything is fine and my phone is working fine, but when i did the custome firmware thing i got a jailbroken iphone but without the telephone service, i have tried to use so many service providers evern the authorized one but everytime i have no service, and i tried to look for the carrier option in the setttings sometimes it was not there, but even when it appears, i get the error “unable to find carrier list”.
i returned back to offical Os 3.1 so i can use my service.
any idea?
If you tru to jailbreak your iphone more than once on 3.1 it wont work, but for your first time it will work

I know the phone is already being hacked.I can see cydia inside but don’t know by which method pwnage or other. So what should I do now to upgrade my firmware. Please help!
Well, after sifting through all the BS online I found this and tried it. I was getting the 1604 error. I followed the directions and it worked for me. I’m now running 3.1 with cydia already installed. This is after trying to downgrade and the whole gamut after being an idiot and upgrading via iTunes to 3.1. Great Job guys!

I downloaded my IPSW file from a torrent site and didn’t have to join it so that worked out well…one less step…also I did the restore with iTunes 8.2 not 9.0..I was a little nervous about using 9.0…I had read a couple of different things that people had problems with the 9.0 and unlocking/jailbreaking the 3.1 software…the only bad thing was I lost all my contacts..I had about 150 contacts…so that sucks…but I could live with it..The 3.1 software is amazing…!!!

I used the pwnage tool on mac to jailbreak my iphone 3g to 3.1. But i am getting “No Service signal” The baseband is 5.11.07…and bootloader version is 5.9
Any idea if I can unlock my iphone ?
I tried using fuzzybase band downgrader but it will only work with bootloader version 5.8

Do you happen to know your baseband version ?
You can know that by running fuzzyband downgrader app on your iphone..
If its 5.8 then you can downgrade your baseband and then unlock it..
I think you will also have to revert to version 3.0 which will be possible once you downgrade your baseband
Read some forums regarding ” downgrade your iphone baseband to 4.xxx”

Now I read that if you used redsnow before you should wait and NOT UPGRADE to 3.1 and use Pwnage Tool right? Does anybody know if its safe to convert from OS 3.0.1/RedSn0w to OS 3.1/Pwnage Tool? I’m new to all of this but here is my situation. I just bought a iphone 3g from a friend and the firmware is 2.2.1 with baseband 2.30.03 and bootloader ver 6.02. I just jailbroke with quickpwn but i know you cant unlock it with that baseband version with yellowsn0w. So my question is should i update to 3.1 with the custom firmware and unlock with ultrasn0w? will the baseband be 04.26.08 or 05.11.07? Also im with tmobile. please if anyone can give me some answers i’ll really appreciate.

I’m having a problem with my phone, and the only solution I have to fix it is to restore the phone via iTunes. When I start the process, iTunes warns that the phone will automatically restore with 3.1 firmware. If I allow iTunes to do this, will I be able to use Pwnage to rejailbreak and re-unlock my phone?

As all have done, i too accidentally upgraded my 2G iphone to 3.1 and it got locked. It was jailbroken earlier and being used in india.
I hv downloaded custom firmware and restored to 3.1. But i am unable to downgrade to 3.0 (not recognising the sw) or earlier versions. Even redsn0w is also not working. My PC works on window XP. Pls explain what to do?

This worked perfectly on my iphone 2G AT&T locked iphone preinstalled with 3.1 update via itunes..
I started with restore mode first.. by holding the home button and shift+restore in itunes to select the custom restore file. then after sometime the itunes throw-ed the 1604 error…so i forcefully restared my iphone by holding both power n home button for 10sec.. then my phone entered into the recovery mode loop..
I downloded iREB 3.1 and installed the same.. then closed the itunes and patched the recovery loop first..( while patching it will ask u to install the libusb-win32-filter-bin-0.1.12.1 if it is not present in ur system.. if not pls download the same and install it…
After patching recovery mode loop.. u will get a apple logo alone on the screen after restarting the phone…
Now put the phone in DFU mode…follow the video instruction exaclty. the link is mentioned in the iREB itself..
( Note : if phone is in recovery mode u will c connect to itunes on screen… if in DFU mode u will c nothing on screen )..
Once u are in DFU go ahead and select the iphone 2g after patching u will get the white screen and iREB will crash.. now u can open the itunes and it will automatically asks u to restore now select the custom firmware using shift+restore and upload…
Now u will c some process bar in the itunes after 4-5 mins u will a process bar under apple logo in the phones screen.. in next 5 to 10mins u phone will come up unlocked and jailbroken..

My iphone is 3g factory unlocked and would like to have thebenefit of cydia. Do I still have to go through all the steps of jailbreak & unlock with Redsnow?

@ Ivo Jochman download iReb from ttapple.net and follow the onscreen instruction for custom restore.

hey if you get eror 1600 after restore
now i have solution
iphone in condition 3.0 or 3.0.1 firmware
connect to itunes
then select restore and select the costume restore firmware that you have downloaded
and restore it manually without DFU or recovery mode.

I have a few questions & hoping someone can help me. I bought a used iPhone for use as a skype/ipod/wifi device. I plugged into itunes on Jan/09/2010 and updated it, thinking nothing of it. I don’t plan on using it as a phone and I don’t want to. Well now it’s locked on me and displays “no SIM Card installed Insert a valid SIM with no PIN lock to activate iPhone. Not knowing what version it installed, I tried the steps above to Jailbreak it, but I’m not familiar at all with iPhones or any apple gear.
I have a Windows PC and would like to use this phone without a SIM card or plan. Is there any way I can get this going without being able to enter the phone to find out the version, using a windows pc?

I have iphone 2g I upgrade it to firmware 3.1.3 I jailbrok it with redsn0w 0.9.4 it worked but seems like it has not been unlocked,it can not recognize my sim,gives me “No Service” at the left top,Waht should I do ,Please somebody help me ,PLEASE,SOS!!!!
