I am interested in installing SL on a old poc (that does
not have any mac os on it). Is there a guide available somewhere
that shows me how to install it on a pc? thanks

  3. Jeremy December 3, 2010 Reply

Hi everyone, I stumbled on an interesting observation yesterday.
I tried to install SL exactly stated in this article. But whenever I went to install it it would not validate.

After doing some research I found out that too much ram can cause the install to fail.

On my laptop I have 4gb of ram, to make this work I had to take out 1 2gb stick. After that, it worked like a charm!

(Of course, put the stick back in after)

Arf, I got a kernel panic just at the begining, and even with the boot parameters, it’s only register addresses that I get as informations…
SO I dunno if it comes from this or not, it was just at the begining, some stuffs get loaded and then BAM!

I have to say that I’m installing it on an USB drive alse, maybe that’s the point 😉

i have problems with the GUID partitioning process, when i try to create the GUID partition, the progress bar doesn’t fill, i waited about 6 minutes and the process didn’t finish, i tried the other 2 partition schemes and both work just fine,

am i doing something wrong or not doing something? does the disk utility of MacOSX have any kind of restrictions?

    what i did use:

    * Sandisk 8Gb Memory Stick PRO Duo (using a PSP 1001 and then a USB Generic Card Reader)

But every few times I reboot the computer, the computer doesn’t start up anymore (the fan spins, but nothing is working, not even the BIOS) and I have to clear my CMOS memory by taking apart the computer and removing the motherboard battery for a few minutes every time to make the PC work again.

    My specs are:

A friend of mine is converting my PC based Intel board over to MAC. He was able to install the 10.5 version and it worked fine until I updated the OS. He’s now trying to get Snow Leopard 10.6 on the machine. It installed ok but was having problems with the ethernet card not connecting to the internet and we replace the card and its seems to be working but the big problem is not all the USB’as are working. The mouse and keyboard work fine but when plugging in like an ipod or external devise it doesn’t work. He said something about seat belt isn’t working properly but we both have looked and havn’t seen anything to fix the issue…..any ideas of what to do? I’ve replaced the hard drive with a new one so there is no issues with the old MAC os interferring.

I would just like to point out that osx86 island was not the first to get snow to work, I was just the first to post a decent tutorial on it. The people on the osx hu irc (godly people, very awesome crew for putting up with me) – and the people at insanelymac (where I met ridgeline) were the core behind it all. Of course, you cant make mention of an osx86 anything without mentioning netkas, who, while reluctant to help (he’s not to blame, about a million people bombard him with questions every day) is an amazing impact on osx86 in just about every category.

Awesome thread though, keep it up! Hopefully you can provide the support that I currently cannot!

I am trying to do this, but keep failing at the DSDT.aml patching section. Here’s my environment:

I downloaded a VMWare image of Leopard and it runs great. No problems so far. I connect a second harddrive with a USB adaqpter, Leopard sees it right away, I partition it and begin following these steps. Always fail to patch on DSDT. I tried hooking it up directly to the computer and adding it as a second hard drive to the settings for the virtual machine, and still fails at the DSDT.

    My hardware:
    Abit KN9-SLI with AMD 6400+ Athlon 64 x2, 9600GT 512mb graphics card, 4Gb DDR2.

I installed OSx86 Leopard once before, but that was a while ago… when I had an available DVD to burn to. If anyone has suggestions, or more resources for me to read, please email me comatose.dreams@gmail.com and let me know. Thnaks!!

FYI to anyone in my boat..

I followed these instructions on an HP netbook. I first has a working iDeneb 10.5.7 on one partition (GUID-based) and a retail Snow Leopard install on a second partition.
After I copied the kext file as described above to my /SL/Extra/Extensions folder (and associated .mkext), I could boot either install. It was just hanging.

I tried various things (fixing permissions, looking for any other modifications), and eventually booted my install disk and removed the /SL/Extra folder I had created. After that my 10.5.7 started loading again.

I don’t know why putting the extra extensions folder on the 10.6 partition would stop by 10.5.7 install from booting, but I can verify that this is what is happening after doing it again as a test.

(I’m assuming I just don’t have the right extensions for my system, btw)

First of all: thank you for the great guide.

I have an ASUS P5W DH Deluxe main-board, Leopard ist still running great, no kernel panics, transfer rates are fast (SATA/USB/FireWire).

I installed Snow Leopard on a new hard drive (no upgrade of the old system; I tried it once, I had many issues, so I decided to go with a clean install). Everything works so far. Internal SATA-drives are fast and responsive.

BUT: transferring files via USB or FireWire is extremely slow (as I mentioned before, both still very fast in 10.5.8); it takes a looong time, even to copy a small (e.g. 1MB) file.

Does anybody have any suggestion, what to tweak in order to boost the transfer-rate via USB and FireWire?

Help MacOSX stops loading on ASUS V3-P5G43

Salut the X86 community; tks for this wonderful collection of instruments; before even thinking of “snow” i wanted first to install Leo without “snow” but stranded:
After inserting Mac OS X retail loading started as foreseen, but stopped a minute or so after having produced the grey screen with apple vignet, the last line (F8-v) being: -Extension “com.apple.driver.Apple.ACPIPlatform” has immediate dependencies on both com.apple.kernel and com.apple.kpicomponents; use only one style.
(I made two screenshots). And there it ended; i would appreciate any suggestions to solve this without touching the retail. Tks in advance.

@ Lokisimio Actually Snow leopard minimum requirement is Core 2 Duo, even Dual Core processors aren’t supported yet. You need to wait for hacked kernel..

any ideas? it will run fine if i boot to safe mode… if i boot and ignore caches – that when eventually i will kernel panic.

Install went fine and all started up ok. Had to make a custom efi-string hex thingy using this guide http://forum.netkas.org/index.php/topic,104.0.html for the 7300le I have.
My Wacom tablet keep reverting to default prefs with each reboot – no big deal.
I have to start each boot with the -v to get the desktop up otherwise I just get a blue screen. Only thing strange in the bootup osd is that the FakeSMC isn’t loading??
    Still working on the Sound

    Hi folks!

First of all, thank you very much for this guide.

I did my Snow installation through a 10.5 Leopard with Efi.
I used Chameleon v2 and had to manually replace the “boot” file.

Now, normal booting isn’t possible, than the wheel under the Apple logo keeps spinning. So i tried booting with “ignore caches” and it worked. After the welcome screens I could play a bit with the finder but I got 2 kernel panics when i was surfing the internet and installing Natit (tried to install that ’cause my graphs were crapy).
Another problem is that i can’t see any HD’s on my desktop.

So could somebody please help me?

Thans in advance, much appreciated !!

  79. Alex September 4, 2009 Reply

    Hi All,

I have installed all successful and the first boot went pretty far comparing to all following boots- anyways, the result is a panic. The first boot it finished loading kexts and normal system startup begun, than panic, and it said there were some problems with appleio… I cant recall the name exactly. All other booting stops much earlier, while screen runs fast, this must be a cpu panic.

I can’t even boot any further no matter what mode i try. -x32 or single user mode boot results in an early panic.

    Any clue guys?

@ Dhruv Boot with -x32 flag to boot in 32-bit mode.

@ Travis @ Vincent Boot with -x32 -v -f mode and report the error message.

@ Hayim Yes you can use your friends MacBook.

@ Flavious Google for appropriate drivers fr your KB/M or you can use your Leopard ones but for 32 bit only. To Avoid “Installation Failed” error remove languages while installing Snow leopard under customization option.

@EVO Yes you are right but you need to replace the default OSInstall.mpkg with a Modified one so google for modified OSInstall.mpkg, to install on a single HDD.

    Hi Vinay,

Thanks. I will try this weekend because I found other issues with my vanilla Leopard setup. I have one IDE harddrive, one SATA DVD drive, three SATA harddrives. I have chameleon installed somewhere but I thought was all drives because when installation, I installed Chameleon as bootloader. However, I tried to disable my IDE harddrive where iATKOS_v7 was installed, all my SATA harddrives (one with xXx_distro (vanilla), one with Windows Vista), can’t be booted. Seemed like the bootloader is in the IDE HDD only. I have the third SATA hdd for snow leopard, thus, hope to install SL in this.

    What I’m going to do:
    (1) disable (unplug) all drives and leave the third Sata HDD and DVD drives.
    (2) Partitioned the Sata hdd into 3 partitions.
    (3) installed iATKOS_v7 into the 2nd partitions. Tried to boot into Leopard.
    (4) from Leopard, install SL into the first partition.

    What do you think?

Is the ‘Chameleon v2 Snow Leopard Support.pkg’ a seperate download, or is it just an option in the Chameleon v2 install?

  90. Josh Johnson September 1, 2009 Reply

@ Vinay – I did a clean install with 1.0, but I cant finish the rest of the tutorial because the files in the extra folder are not there, its just an empty extra folder.

    • Vinay September 1, 2009 Reply

@ Josh Nope the Retail Disk doesn’t made any effect so don’t worry about that. The main difference is made by the kext selection so be careful and do a little research on forums about your board. About chameleon 1.0 you can create an Extension folder in Extra or you can also install to System/Library/Extension

@ Jerky33 Chameleon 2.0 can’t boot Snow leopard itself, so Netkas developed PCEFI 10 that adds the support to SL, the Chameleon v2 Snow Leopard Support.pkg replaces the boot file of chameleon with PCEFI 10. You can do it manually also as described in guide above.

“If Chameleon 2.0 + EFI 10 gives you Kernel Panics then reinstall and try Chameleon 1.0 + EFI 10)”

When you wrote this, do you mean if it gives you a kernel panic during the install process to try 1.0 or do you mean if the installation gives you a kernel panic?

    • Vinay September 1, 2009 Reply

@ Josh I mean a clean install then use Chameleon 1.0 instead of 2.0

@ EVO Use OSX86 tool for 9400 String, other wise leave the step and boot your SL in Safe Mode then install Nvidia drivers.

@ Shikhar For X58 Motherboards You need to install a Patcher Download here

@ Ben Boot in Safe mode or 32 bit mode and set you Welcome Screen.

@ iDvl Your Leopard extensions will work only in 32 bit mode.

Important to note for anyone having installation issues:
I could not get past Phase 1. Every time I tried to install, I would get an “Install Failed” error message. I found out that it is NECESSARY to remove the additional languages and printers. Once I removed them, the install completed.

@ James Chameleon RC2 is very Unstable and every thread available on net is using either RC1 or Chameleon 1.0, about Cmos error your DSDT isn’t patched correctly.

@JJ Guy Aha my bad, just corrected the error actually the boot file is included with Chameleon download.

I am a little confused on step 2 of phase 2:

“Then Navigate to the root of your “Snow” Drive and delete the “boot” file you see. and replace it with the boot file included System Downloads (you downloaded earlier)”

What boot file are you talkin about in “System Downloads.” I downloaded everything in the links and there is no System Download folder or anything. I am stuck at this step because I need to replace the boot file.

  108. James August 29, 2009 Reply

Why use Chameleon 2 RC1 but not Chameleon 2 RC2?
I got CMOS checksum error everytime I reboot my system.
    My board is Gigabyte GA-965P-S3

I am sure it is the problem of Chameleon 2 RC1. However, I cannot find the “boot” file which is for RC2 and works for snow leopard.

Vinay , you should update your guide. Firstly , include basic troubleshooting and stuff. Secondly , it doesn’t cover in incase of kernel panic. Thirdly , it will not work if you have EFI partition 200MB which is meant for Leopard , as you’ll have to replace it. Anyway nice attempt on a quick tutorial

If you do have the time , do look at my tutorial (a simple guide) .

Those who are getting kernel panic , its related to iOATAFamily.kext , you gotta get a patched kext from netkas anyway

  110. Vinay August 29, 2009 Reply

@ Sam2 AppleRTL8169Ethernet Driver is causing the problem so Disable your LAN in BIOS and boot again. Once you boot in SL then find and install 8169 SL Driver.

@Rob If you have Chameleon 2.0 on your Leopard then you can skip step 2 in Phase 2 else go for step two.

@ Thomas & JJguy Yes you can Install on Same Drive all you need to have a modified OSInstall.mpkg you can google it.

@Solidtruck & Eric Try different boot flags like -x32 -v -x -f and note the error message if any.

@Josh Johnson While Installing SL remove Printers and Languages to make a successful install.

@SilverZero Thanx for your love and support, i noticed your support on InfiniteMac thread.

@ Everyone If you have any Kernel Panic then try to boot with -x32 -v -x and note the error messages. Keep playing because learning is a fun

I received an error when I was installing snow leopard. it said it was not able to install all of the files to the HD. I went on anyway, it has started up, but it crashes all the time, and at different points. When I mean crashing, i don’t mean the error message in 50 different languages, this one has errors displayed with random codes on the entire screen.

Would it have something to do with the installing error, i cant seem to get around that error either.

@ ChainLightning: That’s the “root device” error, it basically means you don’t have the right hard disk controller kexts. You gotta find out what your controller is and find the right extensions for it.

  117. Seven August 28, 2009 Reply

    @ ChainLightning

that’s whats called a Kernel Panic or the mac equivalent of a BSOD.
If you followed this guide and installed OSX using chameleon 2 then at boot before the timer runs out before launching OSX press the down or up arrows and it will let you select various options. One of them is -v (Verbose). Choose it and then post what error you’re getting because that will give us a clear idea of where the OS is panicking.
