I have the same doubt. I bought a factory unlocked 3GS from Dubai.
Did u update the software? is it working fine after your update to
OS 3.1.3???

I bought the 16gb 3GS in Deira city Centre from a stall outside Carefour. Think it was 2800dhs but I’ve had it a while now, don’t remember exactly.

I’ve since found out that my iPhone came from Hong Kong which are all factory unlocked and can be updated with no problems, no jailbreaking required.

If you plan to buy an import phone please check the link below which provides info on Model numbers which are unlocked.

Ryan, yours is a factory-unlocked iPhone 3GS, which means you can upgrade/update with official Apple IPSW and your iPhone will never be locked. You never have to worry about your iPhone getting bricked.

I bought a grey market 3GS in Dubai as availability was a major issue with the local carriers.

When first syncing with iTunes I got the “Congratulations, your iPhone is now unlocked” message.

Doe this mean an official unlock has happened and I’ll be OK to update to 3.1.3??

I have no idea which country the phone originally came from.

Thanks for the help, I don’t want to end up with a brick!

All iPhones needs to be unlocked, it seems they are everywhere else but the USA, and you should be able to choose your provider. If you own it you should be able to do as you please.

In Thailand “True” also sells now unlocked 3GS iPhones and I think also some iStudio Apple Retail Shops. So if you go there on holiday plan about EUR 600 more into you budget for the 3GS 32GB

@Lisalicious which iPhone do u have? Coz the official unlocked iPhones were only sold with the iPhone 3GS in Australia.
