so i’m running windows 7, have a 3g iphone. It is not my iphone, my friend kept bugging me to jailbreak/unlock it for him..so here goes:
this iphone made it through one jailbreak prior but cydia ending up failing and since he didn’t have a sim card (he bought phone used) it wouldnt make it passed the “no sim card” phase today.
I ran redsn0w and made it through the process, although it keeps saying it’s done before the phone itself is finished. once i get to the part where the iphone reboots it gets stuck on the apple logo….and sits there, then flashes and repeats the whole apple logo freeze up, rinse repeat.
i’ve gone through the redsn0w process about 10 times now, stuck at the same point everytime……
my biggest concern is that MY itunes has MY iphone 3gs data/backup..i don’t want to link this 3g to it encase it tries to take on MY phone’s attributes-don’t want to destroy MY phone over this entire scenario

how can i fix my situation with the older 3g if i don’t have the actual phone’s old backed up data?
other than that this is an awesome program…

Im a total newbie to anything like this so i hope you dont mind. Ive just been given a iphone 2g running 1.1.4. Its been jailbroken & unlocked in the past by my brother but since he just gave it to me he restored the settings. I have a bunch of app icons now that dont work and i cant get rid of them, including installer which doesnt work either. Basically all i can do is make/receive calls & send/receive texts. Id like to re-jailbreak the phone if i can and install cydia so i can download the apps id like to use. I havent a clue where to start though and what the best option is. Alot of sites ive seen say to update to 3.1.3 but wont that brick my phone, seeing as it was unlocked and jailbroken before?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

    hi vinay.

i need your help. i’ve successfully done all the steps you’ve mentioned but apparently, right after it says downloading jailbreak… it went back to where it’s original screen where u see a cable pointing to itunes. what does this mean? how come i’m still unable to use the phone? it only says slide for emergency calls.

my phone actually works perfectly fine before. i performed this unclocking process due to i accidentally updated it’s firmware to the latest version in itunes and unluckily, it ended up being on this screen (emergency calls only). would appreciate your immediate reply. thank you.

Just a followup to my previous post, Now there are none of my photos/contacts . I had previously taken a backup in itunes while on the older 1.1.4 version. Is it safe to do restore using my backup in itunes 8.2 as now i’m running the jailbroken unlocked 3.0 version? I some how made this work and too scared to take a risk of trying to restore from backup and spoiling something which is now properly upgraded. Is it safe to do that?

  10. Mani March 3, 2010 Reply

It gave me a scare initially when it got stuck with the apple logo after successfully jailbreaking and installing the BootNeuter etc. Phone was recognizable in itunes though, but it just would not come out of the apple logo. So removed the usb cable. Kept on pressing the home button and then inserted back the usb cable. After a few seconds the phone switched to recovery mode. Then again i restored the 3.0 firmware and ran the exe. This time i selected both Unlock and Cydia.(first time i had selected only Unlock). Then after all the steps, it seemed to again get stuck with the apple icon, so as mentioned in one of the post above, i quickly removed the usb and plugged it back again and everything came up well. I was successfully able to JB/UL my 1.1.4 iphone ( previously JB/UL using Ziphone ) to 3.0 version. Thanks a lot.

    Thanks for the info!
I unlocked and jailbreaked an Iphone 2g (1.1.2) that a friend gave to me. The process went smoothly everything seems to work!
    a few notes:
-only install cydia or icy not both
-wifi is buggy but I read that is a 3.0 issue (works but not all signal bars showing even when beside router)
-keyboard in cydia search is slow and ‘silent’ mode is ignored.

now looking into updating to 3.1! (first checking to see what the cons are)

I have a jailbreakd version of an iphone 2G (not sure abt the fw). Assuming it to be the Fw 2.x; I am also not sure which tool was used to jailbreak the phone.
I upgraded the firmware to 3.0, w/o the knowledge that it wud lock my phone.
Now i am in a desperate need to unlock my phone, as i cannot use it.
I went your article, but i am unble to find the files to be downloaded to my system. Am i missing somethin?
Also in some of above reviews, i have noticed that on upgrading to Fw 3.x the photos wouldn’t appear properly.
Is this true? If yes, then pls let me know how to overcome this.
    PLEASE HELP!!!!! SOS!!!

Ok, Ive been reading this post and all the comments intently because I intend to jailbreak my 2g i-phone, but my question is this: Do you need to remove your SIM card before the jailbreak procedure or leave it in there, or it does not matter whether you remove or leave it in the phone while jailbreaking?

    • Vinay October 30, 2009 Reply

@Shaderkul Certain SIM like T-Mobile 3G causes some problems, so it’s recommended to remove the sim card while the procedure.

when it gets to the “waiting for reboot” screen

i just unplugged the usb cable and re plugged it in real fast

    everything worked after that

  25. Kevin October 3, 2009 Reply

Everything looks like it’s working fine, but at the end all I get is the USB cable pointing to the iTunes logo.

You have a link to iTunes 8.2, but NO WHERE in this guide do you mention where to use iTunes, and therefore the guide is incomplete. I am totally in the dark with a useless iPhone.

I updated my 2G to 3.1. This are the steps to jailbreak it again:

    1. Downgrade your Iphone to 3.0 http://www.ihackintosh.com/2009/09/how-to-downgrade-iphone-os-3-1-to-3-0-for-iphone-2g-3g-3gs/

    2. just follow the instructions on top of this side

I spend the last four hours with reading, trying and screaming…

I have tried my g2(1.1.3) to this 3.0 – failed. Got into recovery mode, bad one… iRecovery did not help etc.

    How i fixed:

    1) use iTunes to do “recovery” – pick same new OS3.0 version – you will get restored – but fully locked phone. It did even complain about my T-Mobile sim 🙂 – but well, i did not mind. Just get it into next step.
    2) RedSn0w repeated, but used version 0.72 instead of 0.8 – and WOW – it did go through this time. Lapota…. 🙂

Every thing is up and running now – Thank you – amazing difference between my old 1.1.3.

  38. Phil September 13, 2009 Reply

    6) Insert new Sim card. Iphone does not recognise Sim. Pop-up advises No Sim-card Installed and No Sim appears in left hand corner.

Settings/Phone is blanked out. In Settings/Network/Cellular Data all settings are still listed as those saved by my old carrier i.e. the carrier the iphone was locked to.

If I re-insert my old Sim Card it is detected. I can now toggle Settings/Phone.

I’ve repeated the jailbreak procedure several times with the same result each time. This seems to be a very common issue with Iphone 2G and Redsn0w – does anyone have a solution?

Many thanks for producing this guide.

I had the same problem on my mac with 10.4.11. redsn0w would get stuck in the waiting to reboot phase. After reading through the forum and much frustration I did a google search and someone gave the advice that when redsn0w gets stuck in the waiting for reboot, to unplug the usb cord from the iPhone and then plug it back in. This worked for me and I hope this solves someone else’s problem.

My question is if i could find the files from my old syncronisations and restore my iphone with those? or atleast find the old contacts i have used. Anyone able to help would be a blessing.

I was given an unlocked/jailbroken 2g 8GB iPhone by a friend as the ear speaker was faulty.
I took it to Apple in London and they reset the software to see if that was the problem – it was not.
I had the speaker replaced and unlocked the phone again using the above guide and succeeded with very little difficulty.
However I cannot seem to connect to the internet – when I scan for WiFi it finds nothing and when I enter the name of my wireless network it says “Could not scan for wireless networks”.
I do not know if it was like this before the unlock as I never tried it.

Hi all of You possessing an apple product 🙂
Yesterday I decided to update my iPhone’s 2G firmware from 2.2.1 to 3.0
Unfortunately i did not update the OS using iTunes. I’ve just omitted it (please don’t ask me why!) Like a donkey i followed the steps placed in a someone’s guide.
So having an unlocked and jailbroken OS 2.2.1 updated some time ago using QuickPWN i run redsn0w.
I did all the steps which i was asked by redsn0w guide. everything went well till the moment my iPhone entered DFU mode. It downloaded the firmware and started to update. After few minutes iphoned restarted. It seemd to be allright. Unfortunately during the restart just after an apple logo dissapeared a weird picture of a guy appeared (perhaps a likeness of steve Jobs) saying something in Russian: http://www.cellphones.ca/news/upload/_Steve%20Jobs%20Hello.jpg
I’m stucked now. Nothing can be done. ITunes doesn’t recognize iphone. It even does not see it. I cannot enter recovery mode. The only thing is i can do is to power it off, enter the DFU mode and use redsn0w all over again! Please help me people. I’m desperate. I’ll be appreciated for any suggestion.

@ KG Don’t go for 3.0.1 because there is no change in 3.0 and 3.0.1 apart from a single SMS patch. RedSn0w 0.8 is designed for 3.0 so i advise you to go for OS 3.0 and Redsn0w 0.8

    Hi Guys,

I tried it the first time and like Hunter and James, got stuck with the apple logo and could not even power it down. Then I followed these steps and now I have a clean unlocked phone.

Remove the SIM. Your phone is stuck on apple logo after boot neutering. Press & Hold power and home button together to force-shutdown your iPhone. Once your phone is switched off, press and hold home button of your phone and connect to computer. This will put your phone in recovery mode. For more details on recovery mode check here http://www.ihackintosh.com/2009/06/recovery-mode-and-dfu-mode/
Once your phone is in recovery mode, you can restore to OS 3.0 again and try the process again. To do this, open iTunes and use shift + restore button on Windows and Option + Restore button on Mac for restoring your phone to OS 3.0. After 3.0 is restored, again force-shut the iPhone down and start afresh.

Ok it does work!….. just follow the INSTRUCTIONS to the letter.

One thing that has been added was the ICY selection I tried to do all 3 (unlock Cydia and Icy) the first time and no LOVE. just a silver apple on the display for 30 min.
With a quick run of itunes 8.2 I repushed their ver 3.0 FW. then back to RedSn0w. so i just did what i was told to do.. the instructions did not say anything about ICY so i left it unchecked and then the LOVE was all over the Iphone 2G in 10 min or less!

Thanks Guys i have been trying to unlock for the last 3 days.
    T-Mobile sim installed

Hi there! Managed to unlock the iPhone 2G in Singapore and upgrade it to 3.0 wth redsn0w following your instructions.
    (Absolutely BRILLIANT btw!)

Anyways I have some connectivity issues (Wi-Fi and cellular signals)
It seems like I have a horrid intermittent WiFi which works sporadically and I tend to have missed calls diverted to my voicemail (Which I have no clue of.)

Any suggestions on how to go about solving this problems?
Should I re-do the whole process again?

    Thanks in advance!

    OS: Mac OS X
    iPhone: 2G

I followed all of the steps:
    – Restore my iPhone 2G manually to version 3.0 with the dled filed from this website
    – Followed instructions using Redsn0w and everything worked perfectly fine (even completed patching BootNeuter and all)

Problem: after patching BootNeuter and seeing all the exiting stuff happening on my iPhone screen, my iPhone reboots. HOWEVER, the screen got stuck on the start-up screen with just the Apple Logo. I tried rebooting the iPhone by powering it off and then turning it on again, but it still gets stuck on the screen. What should I do?

    Thank you in advance!

Let’s say I had a conversation with X stored in my phone before the upgrade, then all the incoming messages are previewed and later stored in the secondary memory allowing me to view it later.(Normal feature)
But, if I have an incoming message from a new contact. Then the message is visible in the preview (presumably the phone’s cache) but once u unlock the phone and try to view the message in the ‘messages’, you can’t find it. Furthermore, the ‘Messages’ logo doesn’t have a count of new messages mentioned on the top of the logo as it used to have earlier.
It is as if there is a problem with the data-base trying to create new master entries.

HELP ME… stuck on “Restore in Progress” after unlock…

I was on 2.2.1 and had not upgraded to 3.0 but had backedup at 2.2.1. state with itune 8.2. Without the 3.0 upgrade I had accidentally applied the redsn0w and of course things did not work. I was stuck in the recovery mode. So, I had restored the iphone via itune 8.2 and upgraded to 3.0 but all data got wiped out. I then applied the redsn0w and the phone got unlocked as described but still w/o my data. Now I am trying to restore from backup that I had performed at the 2.2.1 state and my phone stays in “Restore in Progress” for past 5 hours. What should I do ? Should I wait more ? Would 2.2.1 backup not restore to unlocked 3.0 ? Would I need to downgrade to 2.2.1 and restore from backup and then upgrade and apply redsnow again ? If so, how can I do that ?

Thank you and greatly looking forward to your help…

    Hey everyone! =)

I just jailbreaked my iphone 2G successfully today with no probs! it went soooo smoothly! i am so glad bec i’ve been waiting for this for ages!

    a few notes:

** as mentioned earlier.. to download the ipsw file, USE FIREFOX! it really does work! internet explorer, safari, and others dont work! :s i really have no idea why.. i know its strange but thats just how it is.

first upgrade ur phone thru itunes then follow the jailbreak process as mentioned above. the steps are gr8 and very clear.

and dont worry at all…! u will lose nothing! all your contacts, messages, notes, calendar events, apps, everything else will remain the same! have no worries!

but u never know! U MUST backup ur iphone first before taking any steps, even before u upgrade thru itunes.

    HAve a safe jailbreak everyone!!

thanks a million to the person/people who wrote this. this is the best one i’ve read before i finally decided to go ahead and get the 3.0 software.
    Thanks again!! =D

Woooooah. This was quite useful. First I plug in the iphone follow the steps, halfway through vista cuts me out. OWND….So the iphone is stuck on the screen saying, “downloading jailbreak data”. I say what the heck and i just try to follow the steps again, now my phone is in recovery mode. So I shift click restore in itunes to 3.0, then follow the steps again and within 10 minutes i have my unlocked and jailbroken iphone, =]. Kinda scary at points, i lost all my contacts and photos etc. But it was a very usefull guide, and everything works, cydia, the unlock etc. etc.

*on a sidenote, make sure that you run redsnow as an administrator if ur using vista. even then it may exit out but just do it to be safe. good luck to everyone else!

  75. Vinay June 29, 2009 Reply

I used redsnow to jailbreak and unlock 3.0 on iPhone 2G yesterday and it works A-OK.

Couple of points to add for the instructions posted by Vinay above
    1. Use Itunes to backup your data first
    2. For iphone 2G, you need to restore (basically format) to the 3.0 version. (shift + click on restore in Itunes). Choose the 3.0 software downloaded earlier. I suggest you use this option. Otherwise Itunes will try and download a 250MB file and I’m sure none of us have a superfast net connection.
    3. After restore, follow the steps using Redsnow.
    4. After its done, use Itunes to restore the backup.

It did hang a bit after the unlocking when I tried to restore the backup from Itunes. But a hard boot solved the issue.

Backup your songs separately as they will be wiped out after these steps.
Any other apps installed earlier like OpenSSH, Bossprefs will have to be reinstalled again – which is not a big deal.

Rest of the data (sms, contacts, notes, bookmarks etc) will be restored by Itunes in the last step.

Its working great on Vodafone India. Needed to tweak the carrier.plist file to get the Edge option visible in the ‘Settings’ section. Other than that, love the new featues.

Tip : The 3.0 OS will seem very very slow. You need to Disable Push for Mobile Me.
On another Iphone forum someone also suggested to Install Mobile Substrate from Cydia (dunno how this will help)

Anyways the 3.0 is back to its snappy, fast self just like the 1.1.4 and 2.0.

Thanks, Vinay for putting up this very easy to follow instructions. I was wondering if I still need to follow these instructions (using redsnow and all) to upgrade my unlocked phone to 3.0?

I have a 2g unlocked iphone (2.2.1) which i use on T-mobile usa. I used Quickpwn 2.2.5 to only unlock it (didn’t install the cydia and other installers, only checked the unlock box).

Is it true that i can upgrade to OS 3.0 simply via plugging my phone to itunes 8.2 and clicking Update button? I read somewhere that there is no baseband update.

@ USA Download iPhone OS 3.0 for your iPhone from here Download OS 3.0 Software Update for iPhone 2G, 3G and then launch iTunes and press shift + restore and locate the firmware you downloaded. Don’t use iTunes to download and update iPhone do it manually. After updating use RedSn0w as the instructions given above.

I updated to Firmware 3.0 yesterday on my iPhone 2G, using Vista.
Only problem I had with it was redsn0w crashing during the process, but that was fixed by running it in administrator mode.

So after some hours of having a locked iPhone, it was fixed *me happy*

I found out everything new seemed to be working: keyboard landscape in text messages and notes, voice memo was there, spotlight search, …

But then i took a picture and went to my photos:
    – i saw the picture being taken (there is a small sized thumb where the “go to photo map”-button used to be), but it’s not IN the photo map.
    – when I went to my photos, it was all black, BUT you can still touch a black part and open a photo.

    It’s quite strange really.
So my problems are: I can’t take pictures (atleast not viewable) and my photos aren’t visible in they’re thumb form.

Does anyone have the same problem, and more importantly, does anyone know a solution??

    Thanks a million !

Hi all! An appreciative WOW is all I can stay! I updated with 3.0 and my iPhone was stuck in Recovery Mode till I googled to this forum. I have a 2G 16gig iPhone with 3.0 perfectly running after following these intructions.

If you can see your “unauthorised network” and can make and receive calls from Emergency screen then your phone already unlocked and when applying RedSnow dont select unlock as its already unlocked. As the experts have told us, for 2G the new firmware does not mess with your baseband.

I dont know why some of you with Vista are having problems. I have Vista 32bit and had no issues at all! Just switch off your iphone once updated with 3.0 and run Redsnow and follow instructions! I am in Zambia by the way!!

Hi. I have a problem (and others too). Cydia is crash. It’s a problem with the phone or with Cydia?

@ Kai If you are getting errors in CYdia keep patience, just imagine how many people using Cydia to redownload their apps. Keep trying I just installed ICY How to Install the Icy Installer for iPhone.
      @ Ibrahim Happy Unlocking 🙂

@ Dona No i did update and unlock, and my Apps and Contacts even settings remains the same.
@ Kamlesh No matters you have locked or unlocked once you updates to 3.0 your iPhone will get unlocked again thats why we need to do this drill. Just update to 3.0 and follow the procedure. iTunes logo indicates you are in recovery mode not in DFU pres and hold Power button and home button together for 15-25 seconds to get the rid of Recovery Mode. Then follow the procedure again with a cool mind.
@ New It seems you have some problems with your update, Use Shit + Restore and update to 3.0 then follow the procedure.

Hi, I have a 2G unlocked iPhone 1.1.4 and had some questions.

    1. Should I upgrade to 2.x.x. firmware before upgrading to 3.0?
    2. If the phone is already unlocked should I click the unlock option?
    3. Should the SIM (unauthorized carrier) be in the phone during the process?
