I have an iphone 2G firmware 2.2.1 and want to upgrade to 3.0
Looked around but didn’t find any method to update to 3.1 from 2.2.1 on the 2g phone.
I already have itunes 9.0 installed.
Is there some way to upgrade from 2.2.1 to 3.1 on the 2G phone? If not, can I safely upgrade my phone to 3.0 using itunes 9.0?

I upgraded my unlocked & jailbreaked iphone 2g from 2.0 to 3.0.1 using itunes 8.0.2.20… so as expected it got locked… I tried to jailbreak it using redsnow 0.8, but no luck at all…

I updated my old Iphone to the latest sorftware (3.0) in Itunes. When I use redsnow to jailbreak it, the computer doesnt recognize the iphone in DFU mode. Where can I find a driver for this or are there other sulutions?
Problem:
when rebooting iphione by holding home-button and startbuttun at the same time, then releasing startbutton after 10 secs etc — the computer nows there is some usb unit connected but cannot tell what it is. This means the redsnow program does not connect with the iphone to compleete the jailbrake.

@ Bluecrush If you have a legit SIM from Vodafone then call the customer care they will redirect you to how to activate your phone. The post you are seeing above is for Unlocking means you can use any sim like idea, bsnl on iPhone. Since you are on official carrier so you need to activate through iTunes..
i, i ve restore my 2g to 3.0 and when i try to jailbreak it using redsnow
it stops at the final stage saying(waiting for reboot)..its not even askin for the baseband bootloaders..
So I’m new to the iphone and i need a lot of help, PLEASE. I just got a 2g 16g, i bought it locked but updated to 3.0. I downloaded the 3.0 upgrade software, but the Pwnage software, and two bootloader files, when it downloads, a blank sheet of paper and will not open, this is the error reading:
“Safari can’t open the file “bl39.bin” because no available application can open it.”
I have read a million times how to unlock and jailbreak, but I am so stuck right now. Can someone tell me what i’m missing on my computer to open these files? And I don’t want to kill my iphone in the process, so i’m really scared to play around too much, simply cause i don’t know what i am doing. I currently have a macbook, osx, 10.4.11

I updated from OS2.2 which had baseband from 1.1.4 of 04.04.05 but when I updated to OS3 it did lock the phone and once unlocked the baseband did actually change to 04.05.04.
I need to keep the 04.04.05 baseband so does anyone have a custom OS3 firmware version that will not touch the baseband or an unlock process (if its that which is changing it) that will not change the baseband at all.

- It runs the v2.2 – never updated to v2.2.1 since I understood it was a minor update.
Now I wish to update to v3 but I’m afraid it becomes locked/jailed or, worse, becomes a brick

Hi Vinay, thanks for the guide it was working perfectly unless i got to know that people calling me are getting message my mobile numbr is switched off, everything is working perfectly including sms and outgoing calls and amazingly if i do a outgoing call than i can recieve an incomming call my call goes through or if i call with in 10 seconds after having a outgoing call, but after that i am not able to get the calls any idea i have only 2g Network in here may be some issue of 2G & 3 G please help.

Hi…Following your forum, I have an Iphone 1.1.2, According to your post should Update (Not Restore) your iPhone from 1.1.x to 2.0.2 and then to 3.0, Now updating to lower versions(<3) is not possible on iTunes…Let me know how to proceed. I have downgraded iTunes 8.2 to 8.1 though.

Hi, I’m new in iPhone 2G. I successfully updated from 2.2.1 to 3.0 using the release 7A341. The SIM works fine for Indonesia. But I can’t see the Cydia icon in 3.0 which I had in 2.2.1. I updated using iTunes but not through DFU mode, just connected & update using the firmware file. Also, no MMS function & video camera capture. Are these features only for 3G? Thanks.

right now i’m unable to have access to my iphone at all, since i have an invalid SIM..

So… this is my story… i was courious and decided to go a different way. i had a 2g Iphone with 2.0.1 and Cydia installed. Since i had 2.0.1 i assumed things would be similar t0 2.0.2. (note i used Quickpwn a while ago (NOT RC3) to unlock and jailbreak)
SO… i went directly to the updatewith Itunes 8.2 and after all the process. i got a locked iphone but jailbroken, i mean. i can do and receive phone calls but can’t get tthough the Emergency call screen.
I don’t lose faith, but just would like to know what is the root cause for this behavior?
does QUICKPWN RC3 does something different than the normal QUICKPWN and thus it keps the phone unlocked after the update? or does it has something to do with Cydia?
I will try going back to 2.0.2 and the up again.

I update to iTune 8.2 , did a update to firmware 3.0
Now the phone is locked, so do i need to re-install iTune 8.2 beta,
downgrade firmware to 2.2.1 , quickpwn to activate and unlock then option+update to firmward 3.0 ?
Worked flawlessly for me today, now all I need is a jailbreak, I saw no improvement in speed though. Anyone see different, and i just downloaded the 3.0 update from itunes after installing 8.2 and it worked fine. Very easy guide thanks a lot. Cocoa

Omg I was so Scared Doing updating my iphone,But it worked Thank you so very much.Im a little phone Crazy but when It finished updating.I had tears of joy haha.What made me so nervous was their was a bunch of instructions for windows.Mac was so easy to update Thank you again
I successfully upgraded my iPhone 2G to 3.0 using the method outlined above however I now have no cellular data network coverage. I am in the uk on O2 (but not an iPhone contract) is there a workaround for this?
Vinay, sorry to be so insistent but you are the only source that has been helpful. Why won’t itunes 8.2 on a different computer than the one I used to unlock the iphone not recognize it? when I connect it I get an error message saying that an iphone has been detected but not recogmized and that i should disconnect and reconnet which i have done numerous times! any thoughts?

@ Inma If you are trying to upgrade or doengrade below OS 3.0 you should have iTunes 8.1 or 8.0 but when it comes to OS 3.0 iTunes should be 8.2
@ Afnan Man there is no such way to downgrade baseband from OS 3.0 now wait for Dev Team announcement and you can contact me vinay@ihackintosh.com after dev team release.
@ Tom You needn’t to put you iPhone in DFU mode just go fro a clean update to 3.0 with iTunes 8.2
Vinay, you are incredibly helpful! I just read your reply regarding You tube. I guess now the phone is unlocked but not jailbreak-ed? Is that correct? Is that also the reason why the iphone is not recognized (it sees it but asks that I reconnect) by a different computer than the one I used to unlock it? even if it has itunes 8.2?

One quick note though; on windows pc, Shift-click is equivalent to option-click IN THIS SCENARIO (it’s usually alt-click), this caused me some headache at first; hope this saves somebody some time.
Vinay: If this guide for unofficial iPhone then who will do activation after the update to 3.0 firmware? It’s should be not activated after update or I missed something?
@ Salar After upgrading from 2.0.2 to 3.0 you needn’t to apply any patch your phone will remain unlocked after the update.
@ Ranjit If you have used QuickPwn RC3 then go for simple update to 3.0 otherwise update to 2.0.2 then Quickpwn RC3 and then Update to 3.0
@ Thomz You are missing a step to put your iPhone in DFU before downgrading. Remember when you do 2.0.2 & Quickpwn RC3 then update iTunes 8.2 before updating to OS 3.0

@ Inma Press Home button and power button together for forcely power off your iPhone no do a simple update to 2.0.2 ( you needn’t to put your iPhone in DFU mode while upgrading to 2.0.2 because you are updgrading. DFU mode is needed when you have to downgrade the Firmware. Remember use iTunes 8.1.1 or 8.0 for firmware 2.0.2 and for firmware 3.0 use iTunes 8.2
@ Thomz Put your iPhone in DFU mode and restore to 2.0.2 ( iTunes 8.1.1 or 8.0) then follow the above mentioned guide. Don’t worry keep your cool go through the whole guide twice or thrice it’ll surely work for you.

@ Saaket Don’t worry put your iPhone in DFU mode then restore to 2.0.2 ( iTunes should be 8.1 or 8.0 ) now follow the procedure.
@ John Vega I’ve not tested from beta or GM to final but you can try if it works then fine otherwise put your iPhone in DFU mode then restore to 2.0.2 ( iTunes should be 8.1 or 8.0 ) and use quickpwn rc3. Share your experience here for others sake.

@ Vinay Many thanks, that worked after upgrading iTunes and doing an update, not a restore. Despite there being no changes to the baseband in 3.0, doesn’t a restore completely rewrite everything to factory defaults, including your baseband?
@ hewad I get the same issue with youtube. Perhaps youtube isn’t ready for 3.0 yet.
Mac OS X 10.5.7, Pwnagetool’ed 2.2.1, Older version of iTunes, 2G phone locked to AT&T, using in Canada. No issues with custom 2.2.x images with this setup. Option-”Check for Updates” and it fails during the verification of the image with “unknown error (10)”. I don’t want to do a Option-Restore as that will likely rewrite my baseband (even if it’s to the same version), and I will lose my activation. Any suggestions? If not I’ll wait for the PwnageTool update and the official release.
@ DDD Make sure when you are updating to 3.0 your iTunes should be 8.2 because OS 3.0 is only supported by iTunes 8.2 Don’t worry about baseband update there is no new baseband update in OS 3.0 for iPhone 2G
@ Rishi hmmm you are on a 1.1.4 thats easy because you don’t need to downgrade. For you there are some changes follow the steps given below.
1. Download Firmware 2.0.2 and Update (Not Restore) your iPhone from 1.1.4 to 2.0.2
2. Now download Quickpwn RC3 and pwn your phone as per instructions by Quickpwn setup.
3. When you unlocked successfully your 2.0.2 then install iTunes 8.2
4. Now download OS 3.0 and do a simple update (Shift+Update on Windows Computer)

@ Rohan Why are you so unsure i’ve posted the screenshot of my iPhone 2G 3.0 worked on Cellone an unofficial carrier in INDIA. You may not follow the steps correctly. About youtube video it was inspired from my trick i m using this trick since beta 1. Check the comments many other people done this without any problem.
@ddd There are two OS 3.0 are out in the wild one is GM (Gold Master) and another is Final which is linked to download in the article. You can also wait for 17th for the same..

Everything is fine if you have official iPhone 2G, if you don’t have official then you’ll loose activation and will get a brick. Anybody knows how to activate 3.0 if I’ll have a baseband from 2.0.2 but lost activation.
@ Salar This guide is for unofficial iPhone 2G,don’t worry to play there is no baseband update in 3.0 firmware for iPhone 2G. If any thing goes wrong you can put your iPhone in DFU mode and downgrade back to 2.2.1 any time.
@ Murph OS 3.0 GM was seeded to developers to test their App compaitibility for 3.0 and the final is which is scheduled to release on 17th June.

@ Alex You can’t use Qucikpwn with iTunes 8.2 to unlock your 2.0.2 because Apple changed the way to phone talks with iTunes in 8.2 update. Jailbreakers Stay With iTunes 8.1.1

Hi Vinay, thanks for the guide it was working perfectly unless i got to know that people calling me are getting message my mobile numbr is switched off, everything is working perfectly including sms and outgoing calls and amazingly if i do a outgoing call than i can recieve an incomming call my call goes through or if i call with in 10 seconds after having a outgoing call, but after that i am not able to get the calls any idea i have only 2g Network in here may be some issue of 2G & 3 G please help.
I need help!!! I have Iphone 3G 16g on at&t carrier, right from the store. now i have tried all kinds of quickpwn versions, nothing works. RC3 version wont read the bundle, and the other qpwn always said that my numbers were not matching up, my fhone is 3.0 7a341 now, as i did the upgrage through itunes. how do i get the right info in the browse feild when i want to run qpwn. i restored and did dfu mode, somthin is screwwy.

Hi…Following your forum, I have an Iphone 1.1.2, According to your post should Update (Not Restore) your iPhone from 1.1.x to 2.0.2 and then to 3.0, Now updating to lower versions(<3) is not possible on iTunes…Let me know how to proceed. I have downgraded iTunes 8.2 to 8.1 though.

Hi, I’m new in iPhone 2G. I successfully updated from 2.2.1 to 3.0 using the release 7A341. The SIM works fine for Indonesia. But I can’t see the Cydia icon in 3.0 which I had in 2.2.1. I updated using iTunes but not through DFU mode, just connected & update using the firmware file. Also, no MMS function & video camera capture. Are these features only for 3G? Thanks.

So… this is my story… i was courious and decided to go a different way. i had a 2g Iphone with 2.0.1 and Cydia installed. Since i had 2.0.1 i assumed things would be similar t0 2.0.2. (note i used Quickpwn a while ago (NOT RC3) to unlock and jailbreak)
SO… i went directly to the updatewith Itunes 8.2 and after all the process. i got a locked iphone but jailbroken, i mean. i can do and receive phone calls but can’t get tthough the Emergency call screen.
I don’t lose faith, but just would like to know what is the root cause for this behavior?
does QUICKPWN RC3 does something different than the normal QUICKPWN and thus it keps the phone unlocked after the update? or does it has something to do with Cydia?
I will try going back to 2.0.2 and the up again.

I updated my phone to the 3.0 os by accident and am now locked out of my phone; tried everything, using the custom 3.0 restore
went to itunes 8.1.1 and tried using the 2.0.2 restore as in this guide and there is always the error 1600, 1601, 1602

Now the phone is locked, so do i need to re-install iTune 8.2 beta,
downgrade firmware to 2.2.1 , quickpwn to activate and unlock then option+update to firmward 3.0 ?
Worked flawlessly for me today, now all I need is a jailbreak, I saw no improvement in speed though. Anyone see different, and i just downloaded the 3.0 update from itunes after installing 8.2 and it worked fine. Very easy guide thanks a lot. Cocoa

Vinay, sorry to be so insistent but you are the only source that has been helpful. Why won’t itunes 8.2 on a different computer than the one I used to unlock the iphone not recognize it? when I connect it I get an error message saying that an iphone has been detected but not recogmized and that i should disconnect and reconnet which i have done numerous times! any thoughts?

@ Inma If you are trying to upgrade or doengrade below OS 3.0 you should have iTunes 8.1 or 8.0 but when it comes to OS 3.0 iTunes should be 8.2

Is that also the reason why the iphone is not recognized (it sees it but asks that I reconnect) by a different computer than the one I used to unlock it? even if it has itunes 8.2?

@Vinay, i have iTunes 8.0.2.20 and tried to do a shift + restore on itunes, and it gives me an error 20 all the time.
i even tried on a different machine running iTunes 8.1 and still gives me an error 20.

@ Salar After upgrading from 2.0.2 to 3.0 you needn’t to apply any patch your phone will remain unlocked after the update.
@ Ranjit If you have used QuickPwn RC3 then go for simple update to 3.0 otherwise update to 2.0.2 then Quickpwn RC3 and then Update to 3.0

@ Inma Press Home button and power button together for forcely power off your iPhone no do a simple update to 2.0.2 ( you needn’t to put your iPhone in DFU mode while upgrading to 2.0.2 because you are updgrading. DFU mode is needed when you have to downgrade the Firmware. Remember use iTunes 8.1.1 or 8.0 for firmware 2.0.2 and for firmware 3.0 use iTunes 8.2
@ Thomz Put your iPhone in DFU mode and restore to 2.0.2 ( iTunes 8.1.1 or 8.0) then follow the above mentioned guide. Don’t worry keep your cool go through the whole guide twice or thrice it’ll surely work for you.

@ John Vega I’ve not tested from beta or GM to final but you can try if it works then fine otherwise put your iPhone in DFU mode then restore to 2.0.2 ( iTunes should be 8.1 or 8.0 ) and use quickpwn rc3. Share your experience here for others sake.

Mac OS X 10.5.7, Pwnagetool’ed 2.2.1, Older version of iTunes, 2G phone locked to AT&T, using in Canada. No issues with custom 2.2.x images with this setup. Option-”Check for Updates” and it fails during the verification of the image with “unknown error (10)”. I don’t want to do a Option-Restore as that will likely rewrite my baseband (even if it’s to the same version), and I will lose my activation. Any suggestions? If not I’ll wait for the PwnageTool update and the official release.
@ DDD Make sure when you are updating to 3.0 your iTunes should be 8.2 because OS 3.0 is only supported by iTunes 8.2 Don’t worry about baseband update there is no new baseband update in OS 3.0 for iPhone 2G

@ Rishi hmmm you are on a 1.1.4 thats easy because you don’t need to downgrade. For you there are some changes follow the steps given below.
1. Download Firmware 2.0.2 and Update (Not Restore) your iPhone from 1.1.4 to 2.0.2
2. Now download Quickpwn RC3 and pwn your phone as per instructions by Quickpwn setup.
3. When you unlocked successfully your 2.0.2 then install iTunes 8.2
4. Now download OS 3.0 and do a simple update (Shift+Update on Windows Computer)

Who knows what’s on these images. I might have to wait until the 17th if I can’t get any assurances that one of these is legit.

@ Rohan Why are you so unsure i’ve posted the screenshot of my iPhone 2G 3.0 worked on Cellone an unofficial carrier in INDIA. You may not follow the steps correctly. About youtube video it was inspired from my trick i m using this trick since beta 1. Check the comments many other people done this without any problem.

Everything is fine if you have official iPhone 2G, if you don’t have official then you’ll loose activation and will get a brick. Anybody knows how to activate 3.0 if I’ll have a baseband from 2.0.2 but lost activation.
@ Salar This guide is for unofficial iPhone 2G,don’t worry to play there is no baseband update in 3.0 firmware for iPhone 2G. If any thing goes wrong you can put your iPhone in DFU mode and downgrade back to 2.2.1 any time.
@ Murph OS 3.0 GM was seeded to developers to test their App compaitibility for 3.0 and the final is which is scheduled to release on 17th June.

@ Alex You can’t use Qucikpwn with iTunes 8.2 to unlock your 2.0.2 because Apple changed the way to phone talks with iTunes in 8.2 update.
