FAQ RedSn0w for Unlocking and Jailbreaking iPhone 2G and 3G

Advertisements

Dev team replaced QuickPwn with RedSn0w though it’s easy to use comparing to QuickPwn still many peoples reports some problems using RedSn0w. I have collected some common problems which users getting during their Jailbreak/Unlock process of iPhone 2G or Jailbreak Process of iPhone 3G. Read the post if you have a unique problem which is not covered in this page post a comment below and we’ll try our best to solve your problem.

Dona Asks : I made what u said, and now it is stuck to the “downlaoding jailbreak data..” screen with that disk and a green arrow toward it. What should i do? :S

Solution : I got the same problem during my process here is how i get the Rid, First of all forcely restart your iPhone by hold both power button and home button of your iPhone for 15-25 sec. Now try again by changing your USB cord and port also it’ll be great if you try RedSn0w in Windows XP.

Travis Asks : I am jailbreaking and unlocking an iphone, with unlocked firmware 2.2.2, from a Windows XP. After updating to 3.0, I went through the process, but it is stuck on the last step…the iphone now only displays and arrow to a harddrive and says “dowmloading Jailbreak Data…” i followed all the steps…whats happening?!

Solution : First of all force quit your iPhone by pressing and holding the power and home button together for 15-25 seconds. This will restarts your iPhone. Now follow the same steps again and take care of following.

  • Use another computer and prefer to use Windows XP
  • Try changing USB cable.

Sam Asks : When I am trying to unlock my iphone 2g 3.0 firmware it wont even let me get past the first step? it says unable to recognize?

Solution : This problem is due to incompatible firmware, bad download. Re download the file from links given below. And make sure While saving the file keep confirm it is saved as the name iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw not the iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.zip

Hamid Asks : I have 2g phone with 1.1.4 software. Can I update directly to 3.0 using redsnow or will I have to update to 2.2.1 first?  Can the sim card be left inside while unlocking?

Solution : There is no such restriction regarding Sim Card, in my case i used to unlock while SIM is in but if you are facing any problem then you can try this trick.

Aaroon Asks : Hey, i just followed all the steps and my phone rebooted, but now all i get is an iTunes screen with the USB cord on it. Am i missing something.

Solution : iTunes with USB screen indicates that you are in Recovery Mode not in DFU mode for more information regarding Recovery and DFU mode read this post What is Difference Between Recovery Mode and DFU Mode. Since you are in Recovery mode you can get out by pressing and hold both power button and home button of your iPhone for 15-25 sec. Or you can restore to 3.0 again and follow the unlocking guide again.

    Help people.
I tried to unlock/jailbreak my iphone 2g with redsn0w, followed all the steps and it seemed to be working. After the message, “the rest of this process takes place on your device. Done!” my iphone remained on the home (apple icon) forever and even force shutting down isn’t resolving the problem!!! What do I do now. Thanks!

I have completed the steps twice. Both times the software showed “successful” and I still don’t see Cydia. It is not loading.

I tried unlocking using redsnow with IPGSW file iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw, I am getting message until downloading jailbreak data after that I am not getting message which actually updates software.

    Need your help.

    Hey guys,

I might have the solution. Try to hold in the main button during the whole process, even after the seconds have counted down in the last DFU step. I had the exact same problem as you all, the software kept crashing, so I tried this and it worked right away.

    Hope it works for you!

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have unlock my iphone 2G before with quickpwn. Following instructions, I restored my phone to 3.0 without my US AT&T sim card. Started redsnow to update to 3.0, but it got STUCK on “wait to reboot.” I have tried doing it on windows xp also (besides my mac) as some blog said but it didn’t work because window xp doesn’t recognize DFU mode of the iphone. now my phone is back to lock and I can’t get it unlock again!

Have the same problem as ziggy.

but was on 1.02 original version. Restored to 3.0 first then did redsnow procedure.

Everything worked fine, so then I restored my backup data in itunes, and that completed in itunes BUT while doing the backup the iphone showed a logo and progress bar. That never ended even though the data restore was done so I finally had to home-power restart the phone.

Every time it restarts now it goes to the apple logo and progress bar and does a little then just sits there.

Currently retrying the whole procedure for about 3-4 times because itunes restore works to kill the progress bar and let me start over…

now itunes can’t even detect my iphone so can’t restore.worst thing is everytime i restart only apple logo appears and automatically went off after a few seconds.

tried to do redshow over and over again but just got stuck to download jailbreak data forever.

    please help!!!!

    Thanks.

Now my iPhone is not recognizing any sort of USB cable or charger. It says 20% battery remaining, then randomly turns off and flashes on and off for awhile… any input at all? I tried re-jailbreaking it yesterday to see if that would help fix my data connection problem, and now everything is waaaaay worse!! It isn’t functioning at all!!

  12. nerdettebyday August 24, 2009 Reply

Did everything as indicated in the instructions, everything works perfectly….. except data. Every time I am not connected with Wi-Fi, and attempt to load any program that requires a connection, it informs me that I do not have a cellular data subscription. I’ve tried a new sim, and I’ve tried my sim in other phones, so I’ve got it narrowed down to the phone itself, only doing it after I did the update. Any input?

Hey guys. Tried to jailbreak/unlock my 3g for tmobile yesterday on 3.0 but kept having the same problem I’d follow all the steps to a tea. Downloaded the new iTunes, updated to the new software, everything. Then when I’d try to jailbreak/unlock via redsn0w the program would say jailbreak complete or Done whatever it says, my phone would take about another 5-10 minutes to finish the process. Then instead of booting up the phone gets forced into recovery mode. I restored the phone and tried to jailbreak again a few times before giving up. I tried with my sim card in the phone, without the sim card in the phone. Does anyone know what could be going wrong or if I’m doing anything wrong?

  24. MattDFW August 2, 2009 Reply

    @Ziggy-
Having the same problem. Running Windows 7. iPhone 2G.
Restored iPhone 2g to 3.0.1, ran redsn0w with 3.0IPSW to unlock for use on T-Mobile.
Everything works fine at this point.
Restore phone from backup to get all of my contacts synced over and the party ends here. iTunes says that everything syncs just fine, but the phone reboots and gets stuck at the Apple logo with a progress bar that stops at about 2% complete. Have to use home/poweroff from here to turn it of, or start the restore process in iTunes again.

    Any info?

    Thanks,
    Matt

For those of you who got stuck in “waiting for reboot” during redsn0w:
I had the same problem yesterday but i finally figured it out.
It is because you are using the wrong RECOVERY FILE (huge file that redsn0w asks you to browse in the first page).
If you have Iphone 3G your recovery file should be “iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore” and its size should be 235.576KB or 230MB

If you have Iphone first gen, then your recovery file should be
“iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore” and its size should be 234.760KB or 229MB

when restore file is wrong iphone has problems rebooting the device.

Hey, I’ve tried several ways to unlock/jailbreak my 2G iPhone on 3.0. I’m currently running 3.0, iTunes 8.2, on Mac OS 10.5.2.

what’s happening in redsn0w is I’m getting this white screen, for, like 15 minutes. (redsnow reads waiting for reboot) the iPhone then shuts down and restarts, still unjailbroken 3.0 like before.

after using pwnage/DFU mode/restore using iTunes, i get the same white screen, and error 1601 or 2006 in iTunes. I’ve tried with and without a usb hub. and I’ve tried dumping the apple mobile device files and reinstalling iTunes, all to no avail.

    any help out there?

  32. ziggy July 4, 2009 Reply

So, I’m stuck in the same place 2nd time around during syncing after restoring old data.

When itunes does the restore of my old data the phone first shows a big green bar – “restore in progress” – then says it is done and restarts with an apple logo with progress bar. Itunes keeps going syncing my music but the progress bar goes over as far as the apple then just gets stuck there. Syncing finishes OK but the phone is still stuck.

Itunes, btw, says the phone is 3.0, and it seems to think things are recognizes it. Windows even brings up the photo viewer each time and my old photos are on the phone already.

What is the phone doing then? Why the progress bar? Problem with a file being synced, maybe?

I can redo and set up as a new iphone, but do you see any solution so I can restore all my data without getting stuck?

  33. Dave July 4, 2009 Reply

Hey Guys, really have a Problem here. i Updated my perfectly working 2g Iphone 1.1.4 to 3.0 Today using Itunes 8.2. Now that i try to do the redsn0w thing, it does not work! It works till redsn0w reboots the Iphone (twice?). I got a white screen for 2 sec. then it becomes dark (but still enlighted) and thats it. Redsn0w says “Done!”, but its not. I dont even get to the graphical “downloading jailbreaking data” where other users have had their issues.
I tried it over and over again, with different Firmwaredownloads ( yes, i did use the iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw) and all my USB Ports. I even tried to downgrade to 2.2, 2.0 and 1.1.4 via Itunes wich didnt work either! Please help im stuck!

    Thanks in advance

  34. ziggy July 4, 2009 Reply

    Totally stuck.

XP. Was on 1.1.4. Restored to 3.0 first then did redsnow procedure. Chose the cydia & unlock options, did not select ICY.

I read comments above and changed the dock to a different usb port, but same thing. (why would usb port matter?)

Currently retrying the whole procedure because itunes restore works to kill the progress bar and let me start over…

    Ideas what went wrong?

    Thanks.

    Hi there!

I just had the day off at school and work today and I decided I would upgrade my already unlocked iPhone.
To my surprise, I am not enjoying my newly unlocked 3.0 but I encounter myself sitting at my desk and bawling at the fact my iPhone is dead.
I restored with the .ipsw file that is on iClarified.com and then I get the screen with the USB cable and the iTunes logo. I decided to put in in DFU mode anyway, but of course when concluding the redsn0w process I got this screen that said “Downloading jailbreak data..” with a spinwheel at the bottom.
I then forcefully turned it off (home and power buttons) and then when I turned it on again I had that USB and iTunes images on the screen again.

I then tried to re-do the restoration in iTunes, but to no avail.

I am now here, pondering at how life might be with an old flip phone… :’(

Everybody’s help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thank you very much, and you all have a great day!

I managed to jailbreak everything smoothly. Firmware 3.0 is working perfectly on my iphone 2G. There is only one crucial problem: I do not receive about 50% of my calls. Most of them end up showing up as a text message saying I have a missed call or voice message 30mins ago. The same problem happens with text messages. I receive them 30 – 60mins late. However, I can make calls without any problems.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

I got a 2g iphone that was already unlocked and like many other people I was stuck on “downloading jailbreak data…”

I was able to fix it even on Vista 64 bit (ewww vista, i know).
First I had to “shift+click” restore to 3.0 in itunes (8.2).
I ran redsn0w as administrator (right click to run as admin).
Everything ran smoothly afterwards and cydia popped up.

Bad note: You do not keep old cydia apps this way.

    • Vinay June 24, 2009 Reply

@ Cobalt60 use IE to download and save and remember while saving the file it should be ended with .ipsw not .zip
@ Azza Try to reset network settings, me too gets weak signal but after resetting network settings then a reboot and now signal are at its best.
@ Mazid Restore your iPhone back to 3.0 and use RedSn0w again.
@ Eli If you restored iniTunes then your settings and Apps will remain same but if you do update then all of your data will be erased.

This end up working! tried RedSn0w and the result was the “downlaoding jailbreak data..” screen with that disk and a green arrow toward it.
Then I tried turning it off and it doesn’t let me. Then I used iTunes to restore the iPhone and then used RedSn0w again AND FINALLY IS WORKING!!

  53. Eli June 23, 2009 Reply

Will my Apps lose their data after I upgrade my 2G iPhone from 2.2 to 3.0 using redsn0w? I’m worried that all my data will be gone (mileage logs, etc). That is, will syncing after the upgrade restore all apps’ data?

    Thanks!

  54. Vinay June 22, 2009 Reply

@ Zuh Try these things Reset the Network Setting. If still have a problem Put your phone in DFU mode and try to upgrade and downgrade. And finally restore to 3.0 You will be unable to unlock your phone without WiFi access.

@ Marc Do a clean install by putting your iPhone in DFU mode then restore to 3.0 using iTunes 8.0 or 7.5 not 8.2 and then follow the guide again.

@ Zeus Dev team founds a great way to refresh the SIM without manual ejection and they are coding it to a new package. Wait n Watch.

Is there any updated info on the release of Ultrasn0w?? Looking forward to trying out the new 3.0 on the 3G.. thanks

My iPhone hangs at “downloading jailbreak data…” I tried rebooting and get Steve Jobs cartoon saying “Preved!” Now I can’t turn it off to re-start Redsn0w! (i.e. it reboots and won’t stay off)
Also when you say above to restore to 3.0 do you mean thru iTunes or just through redsn0w? (i.e. the second step of the app).
Many thanks for being patient with those of us less experienced than you and for writing this in the first place!
