It’s an update monday Apple released iTunes 8.2 in Software Update, supports iPhone 3.0; QuickTime 7.6.2  & GarageBand also patched. iTunes 8.2 is not supported current versions of QuickPWN and Pwnage tool. This means you can’t jailbreak you iPhone with iTunes 8.2 so wait for Apples Fix or Newer versions of QuickPWN and Pwnage tool. Chronic Dev explained clearly what Apple did ” It will check the hash of newer firmware images, call the mothership when restoring to beta firmwares, have updated MobileDevice so programs like QuickPwn and anything else that uses MD will get messed up, make sure your device has the correct secutity epoch, chipid, security domain, production mode, board id, bb chip id, etc. They can all be patched, but for now, hold back from updating.”

According to Hara Taiki iTunes 8.2 has a new function in iTunes that prevents syncing with passcode locked iPhones/iPod touch’s when in sleep mode.

Musclenerd Tweeted and warns to stay away from iTunes 8.2 unill Dev Team Gets the Rid ” Today’s iTunes 8.2 update changes the way your computer talks to the device. This affects things like QuickPwn and PwnageTool when they when they try to identify what’s connected. Also, ssh over usb breaks due to same reasons. Fixes are in the works but for now avoid 8.2″ For those who accidentally upgraded their itunes to 8.2 on a Mac  Musclenerd guides the way  to completely uninstall the iTunes 8.2 type the following commands in terminal and make sure that the iTunes is closed while performing the task.

sudo rm -rf /Applications/iTunes.app /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DeviceLink.framework /System/Library/Extensions/AppleMobileDevice.kext /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iTunesAccess.framework /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CoreFP.framework /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework

Once the operation performed, Download the iTunes 8.1 from here and Install. iPhone 4G A.K.A. iPhoe’09 first preview is just around the corner. I hope Dev team gets the hold of iPhone OS 3.0 for iPhone 2G, 3G and 4G very soon.

Use it only if your ADD/REMOVE program does not work. You may need to make registry edits and this link above has a guide and software with all the information to follow step by step. It’s not free but its very cheap and worth it. I was going nuts and this eGuide and software package saved my butt!

The guide and software helped me completely get rid of iTunes and all latent registry entires so I could load a fresh copy with no hassle or errors. I was going nuts trying to completely uninstall it until I found this. You will be pulling your hair out of your head unless you do a thorough removal as described in the referenced article. The link to the software is there too !! Many positive comments at the bottom of the post so I took a chance and it worked great! :)

    @Boris
8.2 works fine with the jailbroken iphones. Only issue I’ve noticed is the inability to install certain apps because I never did the 2.2.1 upgrade, but that’s a separate issue.

actually you can go in the itunes folder and delete the library and genius files. you will lose your current playlist but you can always create a new one for your downgrade

    Sorry,
Ignore the second part of my question. He wasn’t looking at all of his pages. But I still recommend using File Hippo.

    Hey,

Thanks for all the info. I also had a brain-fart this evening and ran the 8.2 software update on my Mac version of iTunes. My iPhone 3G is already jailbroken, and the previous comments make it sound like using an already jailbroken iphone with 8.2 shouldn’t be a problem, but that’s not completely clear to me. It sounds like problems occur only if one wants to run Pwnage Tool with 8.2; do I understand this correctly? I’d like to avoid the whole downgrade-iTunes-rigamaroll and just wait for the 8.2 Pwnage patch; will my already jailbroken iPhone work okay with iTunes 8.2? Thanks for the clarification/confirmation.

Here’s a way to get 8.1.1 (a somewhat pimped version, but at least it works with a jailbreaked iphone)

Hi guys, thanks a lot for the tip, if you need to downgrade to iTunes 8.0.1 and are struggling finding the correct link, try this one:

    http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iTunes8/061-5649.20081008.hji9O/iTunes801.dmg

I am trying it now, can’t confirm it works but I will keep you updated!

    hi..
    can iTunes run in linux..?

  16. Vinay June 3, 2009 Reply

@Dylan Uninstalling iTunes on a PC is quite easy go to Start/Control Panel/Add Remove Program Now select iTunes and remove it. Remember you’ll have to rebuild your iTunes Library again.

  17. Dylan June 3, 2009 Reply

Is there any way to perform these uninstall steps on a PC? I inadvertently installed 8.2 and now can’t connect to my iPhone via iPhoneBrowser and would like to go back to how it was before Apple messed with my system.

@Dan You have the backup of iTunes 8.1 Library just replace the file in Library/iTunes folder and make sure to backup your 8.2 itunes folder also .

Again as i said earlier if you aren’t planning to unlock or jailbreak your phone for next two months may be two weeks then go for 8.2 i also updated mine to 8.2 and working fine, but i also have a spare windows machine with iTunes 8.1 in case of any emergency ;)

Got the same message on the iTunes Library. Don’t want to through it away, because I manually edited all information of 150GB music. It will take a lifetime to add all the information again!

Any other solutions? I created an .xml file of my library before downgrading — will that help?

  20. Paul June 2, 2009 Reply

I jumped the gun & downloaded itunes 8.2 without thinking about the ramifications. I used the terminal command & deleted 8.2 & then reinstalled 8.1. Now, when I try to open ITunes, I get an error message, “The file “iTunes Library” cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of Itunes.” Any remedy for this besides going ahead with the upgrade to 8.2.

    • Vinay June 2, 2009 Reply

@ Paul there is no way to downgrade your iTunes library format from 8.2 to 8.1 You have to recompile your iTunes library again for this follow the steps given below.

1 Go to Library and locate the iTunes folder and then drag it to the Trash. You can copy it to another place before deleting the folder.
2 Now launch your iTunes again and create your library again.

PS: If you aren’t planning to do a jailbreak or unlock in near future you can install 8.2 again. I hope Dev team will release the patch or new version of QuickPwn, Pwnage very soon.
