How to Activate Video Camera in iPhone 2G/3G OS 3.0

25 June 2009 by Vinay 35 Comments

Before getting started let me clear we are talking about activating video camera so please bear in mind we are not talking about recording with your iphone 3G 2G on OS 3.0 But i am sure sooner we’ll be able to record video with our 2G and 3G iPhone running on OS 3.0 This hack is a preview of native video recording application included in iPhone 3G S. the full credit goes to iSpazio team who made this hack possible and they are developing this hack. We’ll publish the every latest news so stick with us on twitter or subscribe our free daily e-mail newsletter. For activating the camera you need a jailbroken iPhone 2G/3G running OS 3.0 and SSH client (WinScp for Windows and Cyberduck for Mac). Warning please do this only if you are aware of SSH, WinScp, iPhone File system etc.

Download These Files :

  1. M68AP.plist
  2. IMG_0011.MOV

Procedure to Activate Video Camera in iPhone 2G/3G OS 3.0 :

  1. Download the M68AP.plist file to your desktop and connect your iPhone via SSH and navigate  to/System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app
  2. Now find the M68AP.plist file and rename it to M68AP.bak.plist file and leave it on your iPhone, or yoou can also make a copy it to somewhere on your computer . Next copy the M68AP.plist file one you downloaded on your computer from the link given above into your iPhone.
  3. Move the video (MOV format) you downloaded fro the link above to / var/mobile/Media/DCIM/100APPLE
  4. Now respring your iPhone from SBSettings.
  5. Start the camera and click the button at the bottom left to open CameraRoll. You’ll notice a new subdivision in “All Photos and Videos” and you can start the movie that you have previously uploaded.
  6. Now you can select the area you are interested in and trim the movie.

Here are the screen shots of Video Camera on my iPhone 3G OS 3.0

To re-enable the still camera, you need to restore the original file M68AP.plist by deleting the M68AP.plist file you uploaded and then rename M68AP.bak.plist file again to M68AP.plist. Again respring your Springboard and your still camera will be activated.

    With regards to the iphone 2G (which I still think is one of the best phones out there), I think Cycorder is enough for video recording.

  • radio said:

    How about making it so you can you cy or video recorder. record the videos, and once they record it then you can use iphone’s 3.0 video functions to edit and transfer. Can the native application see the videos from cycorder or video recorder? their mechanisms for moving the files as well as editing is still cumbersome to say the least.

    look i loved the concept and i hope it goes on, ill only (re)make it when video and camera are avaliable to SHOT… :D

    for now, ill keep my photo camera… :D DD

    hope this works in the future for shooting photos,videos, uploading and sharing and trimming and all the stuff that 3G[s] does but, when this probably happens, ill alrealdy have the 3G[s] :D D

    good for me :D

    just jailbreak and use cycorder..its so much easier than going through all of these steps..and a bonus you can record video and still take pics with no problems

  • Mick said:

    Is there anyway this could be linked to cycorder to make it more native to the existing photo camera? E.g. Use the controls that iSpazio have created and make it run cycorder? Or will they create their own native video recording app to use with the controls?

    The same thing happened with me. I have a jailbroken 2g with 3.0 OS. I deleted the new m68ap.plist and removed the .bak extension from the old one. Then i restarted my phone and camera is working again.
    Then i downloaded cycorder. Now i have photo and video on Iphone 2g

    @aCtiSyS:

    Thanks for making the original plist file available; I didn’t make a backup, but only renamed the original on my iPhone. Dunno why, but after deleting the hack and renaming the original to its (um) original name, I was able to take pictures but they wouldn’t save. I resprang and then rebooted, but no go.

    BTW, the Rapidshare link’s dead; the megaupload one’s fine as of today:

    @Vinay:

    Very cool!!! Keep up the good work!

    Remember that using this will break the camera function, You need to disable VideoToggle to have your camera working again.
