Apple launched  iPhone “Invention of the Year” on 29 June 2007 and hackers and devs move towards to make it free from network restrictions. This process is known as unlocking. More general definition of unlocking is gain the ability to sidestep the limitations placed on devices by the manufacturer, allowing for activities such as deep customization and SIM unlocking. The second process is Jailbreak, The iPhone’s operating system is designed to only run software that has an Apple-approved cryptographic signature. This restriction can be overcome by “jailbreaking” the phone, which involves replacing the iPhone’s firmware with a slightly modified version that does not enforce the signature check. The hackers behind jailbreaking and unlocking are GeoHot, asap18, bgm, Bugout, ghost_000, gray, iZs, MuscleNerd, netkas, penisbird, planetbeing, pr3d4t0r, pumpkin, saurik, Turbo, Zibri and many more. The first one click automated unlock + jailbreak utility was released by Zibri named Ziphone. Ziphone works untill firmware 1.1.4 Towards iPhone 1.1.4 up to now the mission impossible is carried by iPhone Dev Team. Dev Team released Pwnage, WinPwn,QuickPwn, RedSn0w and YellowSn0w for unlocking + jailbreaking iPhone 2G, 3G and jailbreaking iPod Touch 1G, 2G. The main diffrence between Ziphone and Pwning is Ziphone used ramdisk exploit, While Pwning used to write to the kernel and NOR. And QuickPwn is combination of Pwnage and the ramdisk exploit that allows jailbreaking without doing a full restore to a custom IPSW.

• Ziphone ( Windows + Mac ) : Ziphone seems to be the tool a lot of people are using in the past. What it does is boot an unsigned ramdisk with a script to jailbreak, activate, and unlock. If you would like to view the ramdisk yourself, cut the first 0xCC2000 from the dat file and mount it as a dmg. The script is in /etc/profile. Also, Zibri, patch out the bootloader check from gunlock, it’ll work with 3.9 Ziphone is a wrapper for gunlock, which means with 4.6, it currently only unlocks 4.02.13 In order to unlock 4.03.13 Ziphone is now blast from past and dead since iPhone update 2.0

• Pwnage Tool ( Mac ) : PwnageTool can activate, jailbreak, unlock and allow for third party applications on your device. Unlike QuickPwn, it does this through a custom restore bundle, or .ipsw. You can then restore to this bundle in iTunes, and on completion have a device tailored to your needs. If you have never ‘pwned’ your phone, PwnageTool will all a special Device Support file which, when in DFU mode, allows a custom restore to be flashed. Once this has been done once, you can continue to restore to custom firmware without ‘pwning’ again. This whole process is completely reversible, just restore to a stock Apple firmware file and everything is back to normal.

• WinPwn ( Windows ) : Winpwn is the Windows version of Pwnage Tool and works same as Pwnage Tool described earlier. WinPwn Project is closed unofficially the most recent version was released on 31-08-2008 and it supports up to 2.0/2.0.1/2.0.2

• QuickPwn : QuickPwn works on the same exploit that PwnageTool does, still breaking the chain of trust in the bootrom, LLB and iBoot. Like PwnageTool, it ‘pwns’ your device, but through a different system. Unlike PwnageTool, QuickPwn can do all this without you needing to restore. It uses a ramdisk and the DFU exploit to make the modifications to your device. For some people, this is by far the best method, as restoring requires you to sync all your data back.
