Use Sling Player Over 3G Without WiFi With Tricker ThreeG .

13 May 2009 by Vinay 43 Comments

Sling Media’s released SlingPlayer an iPhone application, allowing users to watch video streamed from their home televisions over WiFi networks. Sling Media SlingPlayer is available for $30 in Apple’s App Store. Sling Player is supported to work with SlingBox PRO, SOLO, and PRO-HD. Legacy Slingboxes, which include the Classic, AV, and TUNER officially. Sling media promised iPhone users at Macworld Expo to stream live television over WiFi or 3G wireless networks by tapping into home TV setups equipped with a Slingbox. But the final release supports WiFi only. Apple claimed this restriction was imposed simply because it was a carrier-dependent decision since transferring data over the 3G could be costly for carrier. So If you wants to use Sling Player over 3G, EDGE or GPRS you need to remove this restriction yourself, you need to first jailbreak your iPhone. Once that’s done, it’s a simple matter of installing from Cydia the “Tricker ThreeG” app. Note that this trick works for other VOIP programs as well. “Tricker ThreeG” app uses MobileSubstrate Library  that tricks apps into thinking that they are on WiFi even though they are on 3G/EDGE/GPRS. In the default settings you can use Sling Player, Fring, Truphone and Skype.

How to Install Tricker ThreeG.app using Cydia Step by Step Visual Guide :

Step 1 :

Press to launch Cydia from the SpringBoard.

    This works great!

I’ve been waiting for the Sling Player for the iPhone since I ditched my WinMo phone for it in 9/08. I was so bummed…nay…pissed, when it was finally released but with no 3G. I said I wouldn’t buy it until there was a jailbroken app that made it work on 3g. It took a day. Sling Player works great on 3G with Tricker. So does Skype for that matter. What a great little program. No configurations were necessary for Sling or Skype. That’s all I tried it on.

Thanks Hoz for the positive feedback on my little tweak I created. I created Tricker ThreeG a while back but was waiting for the past few months for SlingPlayer to be released so I could release it with that. I had it all ready about half an hour after SlingPlayer was released. I submitted it to Cydia and it was in about 12 hours later.

Thanks again for the guide of my hack and for the positive feedback. Any suggestions for future tweaks or other programs I can use my little tool for that would trick an app into thinking it’s on Wi-Fi?

    Thanks again :P

Can it be modified to allow App Store and Podcasts over 10meg downloads? Maybe it already does this. I haven’t tested yet.

Gents, In order for you to access your slingbox from your iphone over the 3G Network, you must ensure that remote viewing is enabled on your slingplayer. Another thing is sometimes your router must be configured properly to allow for the iphone to talk to your slingbox. You can call a support tech at sling an they will guide you through the proper setup procedure to ensure your setting are correct. Then you can connect over 3G!

Any chance you can get this to work with SipPhone?

  • Vinay Prashar said:

@ Ken SiPhone is still not hackable. I have tried to edit and save “com.vnetcorp.sipphone” string to both Voip Over3G.plist and Tricker ThreeG.list but SipPhone doesn’t work with both of the hacks. We’ll publish a guide as we succeed.

Is there anyway that 3G can be tricked into using the walkie talkie feature/app as apposed to only working with WIFI.

First, this is a wonderful app. I couldn’t live without it! Except now I AM living without it. I just jailbroke 3.0 and when I try to install the app I get an error that reads, “Couldn’t configure pre-depend dpkg for grep, probably a dependency cycle.” Any advice?
    Thanks in advance.

Tricker ThreeG works for me on 3.0 but VoIPover3G didn’t

    Tricker ThreeG ftw

  • Bob said:

I’m wondering if this has to do with the option to install “Icy” in the jailbreak. I selected that option during my install and I’ve been getting other errors when trying to upgrade cydia.

    >>”Error Couldn’t configure pre-depend dpkg for ncurses, probably a dependency cycle”<<

The solution to that one is to rejailbreak without selecting Icy. You don’t have to restore the firmware, supposedly, just re jailbreak it.

Also I read on another site that was getting the error mentioned by Ed. That site indicated the solution is the same. Skip restoring the firmware and just redo the jailbreak without Icy.

Tricker3G works great on 3.0 with my slingplayer (I would have gone back to 2.2.1 if it didnt!). How are the apps defined for T3G to redirect the traffic (is it coded in, or is there a definition file that can be modified). Specifically, I’m looking to use Air Video with it.

  • brian said:

Ok, it was just pointed out to me that you can turn off “check for wifi” in settings. works great! thank you!!!!

The application does not work with Iphone firmware 3.0 for skype neither does voipover3g.

  • Seagull said:

It’s not working with 3GS (JB’d as per Geohot) yet. The apps that need internet connection, like “App Store”, “Slingplayer”, etc., bounced back to Springboard just after launching the app.

Hey there, I just Jailbroke my phone simply for the slingbox over 3g. However, after installing it, my slkingplayer app on the iphone does not work at all. you push it and the slingplayer starts then it breaks right back to the main iphone screen with my icons on it…any suggestions?

  • Vinay (author) said:

@ Cholter Yes Tricker3G is not supported in OS 3.0 we’ll update as soon new version will be released.

hi,, any news on the new tricker 3g i here its out today thanks

  • Seagull said:

Jordan, no matter how other jurks think about you, you did a very great job that helped (still helping) thousands of people to enjoy TV shows, radio programs, and phone calls over the 3G network. It is the reason the 3G invented. But those carriers are trying to control our applications, they are abusing the monopoly. You are one of the heros that liberate us from such dictators.

Hey friend. I have the iPhone 3g. I am not finding this app for it on cydia yet and I think I just read that there isn’t one yet. Is that true and if so when will one be coming out. Thanks for all your hard work

  • Vinay (author) said:

    @QuadZilla Tricker3G is replaced by 3GUnirestrictor.

  • Quadzilla said:

Hey friend I found it. Just want to make sure I wlll be able to use sling player with this right iPhone 3g after I download 3g unrestictor and the sling player app. Thank you for all your help.

  • Sengimage said:

I just used 3G unrestrictor for my iPhone 3Gs. The fee was $2 via paypal and then the option for install becomes available. Well, after the installation it requires respringing the device. My unit froze on the respring…so I let it sit there frozen for about 5 minutes while I began downloading everything to jailbreak it again on my Mac. Before everythng was downloaded I I just forced the iphone to reboot and Boom…. it came up and there was 3G unrestrictor. So I went ahead and configured it. turned off my WIFi and Boom….. slingplayer over AT&T 3g network. BoooYah baby.

Still the respring hang was a real pain in the Ass.
