Windows Live Hotmail A.K.A. MSN Hotmail and commonly referred to simply as Hotmail, is a free web-based emailservice operated by Microsoft as part of its Windows Live group. It has over 270 million users worldwide as of 2008. Some time ago it wasn’t possible to set up Hotmail with the Mail application in OS X (at least without third-party apps/plugins). But recently, Microsoft announced POP3 access free for all Hotmail accounts. So now you can set up Hotmail in Mail.app with the help of following guide.
- Start Mail.app
- Go to Mail » Preferences, and click on Accounts.
- Click on the plus button (lower left) to add a new account.
- Type must say POP, and give the account a description.
- You must fill in the following information correctly or the account will not work:
- Incoming Mail Server: pop3.live.com
- Username: Your Hotmail address
- Password: Your Hotmail password

- Click on Continue
- Set the Outgoing Server to smtp.live.com , then click Continue, and click Continue again.

If everything was done correctly, you can now read and send Hotmail with the built-in Mail.app in OS X.

Thank you!
Bah, pop is so ancient. What they should do is open up their httpmail instead and allow other applications access hotmail directly. I have no interesting in popping it from the server :/ Hello IMAP?
It did not work. I can receive mail but when I tried to send it tells me that “The sender address myname@hotmail.com was rejected by the server smtp.live.com.”
What am I doing wrong?
YOU ROCK!!! Thanks a million!!!!! Greg

You have to use athentication to get it to work.
hi
i’ve followed the above instructions and everything is working. thank you!
i have one problem. when i read my hotmail emails in my Mail.app they are marked as read. however, when i log into hotmail through hotmail website, they are still displayed as unread?
any fix for this?
mani
This was so fast and easy. I tried another method that didn’t work at all. Thanks so much.
my mail looks different maybe because I am running an older version of x? But instead of asking for incoming mail server it asks for pop host and says it can’t connect when I try. I am on a mac powerbook 3g running os x 10.1
Doesn’t works for me, just downloaded part of my mails from 2005, and didn’t get the junk mail, not new mails either, am i doing something wrong?
this works terrific!!!believe it or not was on phone with apple tech-(apple care) and he said…can’t be done…i told him…yes, hotmail now allowed “free” hotmail accounts to allow pop3…LOL

Hi,
Thanks a lot,
but is it possible for us to import the folders as well.
Hi,
I did everything correct but mail.app said
The server error encountered was: Mail was unable to connect to server “pop3.live.com” using SSL on port 110. Verify that this server supports SSL and that your account settings are correct.
What do i need to do to correct this so that it will work correctly?
I am running leopard 10.5.8 on intel macbook.
Hello, just wondering does anyone know how to import folders? also when i delete them through mail.app and when i log in to hotmail.com they are still there is there a way to sync these up?
