How to Install and Unlock OS 3.0 beta on your iPhone 2G.

4 May 2009 by Vinay 12 Comments

It’s confirmed that if you upgrade your iPhone 2G to 3.0 your bootloader remains unlocked. Upgrading your 2G iPhone will not brick your iPhone. Before trying anything sync your iPhone with iTunes and make backup of everything. Read this guide twice or thrice before doing any thing. Remember we are talking about iPhone 2G A.K.A. iPhone Edge please do not try this guide for updating iPhone 3G because it’ll brick your bootloader which is not possible to downgrade at the moment. Beta 4 requires your UDID is registered with the developer program. This is necessary since iTunes 8.2 checks it before updating. In my case i m back on 2.2.1 because 3.0 is very buggy, No Cydia / Installer and most of Applications from App store are also not working so i preferred to downgrade back to 2.2.1

In the following tutorial we have two options if you used QuickPwn (Windows tool) in past please follow the first procedure it requires restore-downgrade-update trick. If you used Pwnage (Mac Tool) don’t worry do a simple update. These guides are tested up to Beta 4 we’ll update this post as the more beta appears. These guides are tested an works well, Do it at your own risk.

iPhone 2g 2.2.1 QuickPwned to 3.0 Beta on Windows Computer :

  • Fire iTunes, connect your iPhone 2G, do a Restore install (option-Restore button) to firmware 2.0.2 Using DFU Mode.
  • Run QuickPwn 1.0 and allow it to pwn the iPhone using firmware 2.0.2. It should finish activated.
  • Using iTunes again, set it up as a new iPhone (do not restore from backup).
  • Now update by click option-Update button (NOT Restore), and choose the firmware 3.0 image.

iPhone 2g 2.2.1 Pwned to 3.0 Beta on Mac OS X :

  • Make sure your iPhone 2G is Pwned 2.2.1 (Pwnage NOT QuickPwn) if sure fire iTunes.
  • Now update by click option-Update button (NOT Restore), and choose the firmware 3.0 image.

    Hello
Is correct your information, I did the process with my iphone 2G and my iphone is unlocked, remember use the firm 2.2.1 Pwend, and then use Update button not Restore.

@ Fransisco Many peoples QuickPwned 2.2.1 encountered with error 1604 while upgrading to 3.0 So we recommend to restore-downgrade-update trick.

If you used Pwnage 2.2.1 then no problem go ahead with a simple Update.

so if im not mistaken, you have to have a have your udid activated with the developer program? so not anyone with an unlocked 2g can upgrade to 3.0 just to have it?

    Seems to be working..

But, icy or Cydia doesn’t come with the upgrade.

Let’s hope 3.0b5 is more stable than b3.

The procedure (iPhone 2g 2.2.1 QuickPwned to 3.0 Beta on Windows Computer) works for beta 5!

Note: in the first step, DFU mode is not necessary
Note: in the second step I used QuickPwn 2.2.5-2 (instead of 1.0)

John, how is it? I got the 3.0 GM firmware and I am using unlocked 2.2.1 right now. I just want to know if I can upgrade if I don’t care about jailbreaking. I need it to remain unlocked, that’s about it.

@Johan @Eddie Yes this trick works with 3.0 GM too i’ve tested it on my iPhone 2G very first day but i think it will be good to wait for final release and jailbreak. BTW just posted a slightly modified guide.

I read your guide. If I understand you correctly, your guide to downgrade it to 2.02 is for activating the phone. If my phone is activated + unlocked @ 2.2.1, do I still have to go through those steps? Can I go straight by loading 3.0GM with iTune 8.2?

BTW, I didn’t quickpwn my 2.2.1, I downloaded custom 2G 2.2.1 firmware from the web which I believe all the custom firmwares are created with pwntool, right?

  • Vinay (author) said:

@ Eddie Yes custom .ipsw are created by Pwnage tool but i m not sure about custom to 3.0 upgrade. Custom firmware can be used with a quickpwned iPhone too. You can try a simple update if works fine otherwise do a downgrade to 2.0.2 in DFU mode then follow the procedure.

If you’d like to take my opinion stick with your current firmware and wait for OS 3.0 final release it’s only one week far :)
