As you may know the 2.2.1 firmware update contains a baseband firmware update (02.30.03) which is not compatible with yellowsn0w. Means if you upgrade your iPhone 3G 2.2 to 2.2.1 your baseband also upgrades from 02.28.00 to 02.30.03 Now the problem is you can’t unlock baseband 02.30.03 with any utility out in the wild. If you accidently upgraded your iPhone 3G to firmware 2.2.1 and you are on baseband 02.30.03 you can follow our guide for baseband downgrading Check HERE. Here we have a simple to follow guide which shows you how to upgrade and unlock your iPhone 3G fro Firmware 2.2 to Firmware 2.2.1 without upgrading your baseband. Yes all you have to do is download a custom firmware hotlinked below this custom firmware is created with Dev team Pwnage Tool that strips out the baseband update from the upgrade. Remember this procedure works with already Pwned iPhones. Before following the procedure let us warn you this method is tested with several iPhones but we are not responsible for any damage. Please read this guide twice or thrice before trying anything.

Step One : Download the iPhone 3G iPhone1,2_2.2.1_5H11_Custom_Restore.ipsw from Filesavr. This Custom Firmware excludes the baseband upgrade so you can be sure 2.2.1 will be compatible with yellowsn0w unlock. It also contains Cydia and Installer which requires later for unlocking. Once Download is finished follow the step two.

Step Two : Put your iPhone in to DFU mode.

Method 1)

  • Attach the phone to the pc
  • Turn the phone off
  • Hold power and home together for *exactly* 10 seconds
  • Release power but keep holding home until the pc beeps as a USB device is recognized.
  • At no point will the display come on. Now your restore should work.

Method 2)

  • Attach the phone to the pc
  • Turn the phone off
  • Press and hold power. Keep holding power. As soon as you see display on the screen of any sort press and hold home.
  • Hold power and home together for *exactly* 10 seconds
  • Release power but keep holding home until the pc beeps as a USB device is recognized.
  • At no point will the display come on. Now your restore should work.

Having problems? Try adjusting the 10 seconds to be slightly less like 9 seconds, then 8, then 7. It’s a tricky timing but you will eventually get it.

Step Three : This step is very familiar to you Launch iTunes and shift-click on the Restore button (option click for Mac users). Then browse to the custom restore 2.2.1 firmware you downloaded from us and let iTunes do the rest. Once the upgrade is finished you haven’t need to jailbreak it again since it was already jailbroken.

Step Four : Make sure to set up your wireless network settings on your iPhone 3G so you will be able to connect to the software repositories in Cydia. Now fire the Cydia app it may requires restart first time.

cydia-userStep Five : Click on the Manage tab on the bottom menu bar. In the Manage tab, click on the Sources button in the middle. You will need to add the source to the yellowsn0w repo to utilize the soft unlock.

cydia-sources Step Six : Click on "Edit" on the top right, then "Add" on the top left. In the URL, type: the following url without quotes “ http://apt9.yellowsn0w.com/ “. When you are done click "Done" and then "Browser."

UntitledStep Seven : Now click on the "Search" tab and type "yellowsn0w" and install the app "yellowsn0w." Once the Yellosn0w is installed restart your iPhone and Wait for the slide to unlock screen and then wait 15 seconds more. If you don’t see the SIM card working, reinsert the SIM and wait another 10 seconds. If every thing goes fine then enjoy the firmware 2.2.1 with baseband 02.28.00

For those who still in 02.30.03 :
Fuzzyband (can be downloaded using Cydia) upgraded my iphone 3g into baseband 04.26.08. You need to tap Fuzzyband after installed & it will ask whether you wish to upgrade your baseband firmware.
Next step is to install Ultrasn0w, you may refer to other article on iHackintosh on how to unlock using ultrasn0w.
And voila …. it was unlocked.

Guide worked just like it was supposed to. I had iPhone3G 2.2 (02.28.00) baseband. Downloaded custom firmware and followed the instructions. Used Windows Vista. I am now using firmware 2.2.1. Thanks.

When I touch cydia after using pwnage it says that it’s reorganizing and when it finishes, cydia and installer are missing from my homw screen? Any reason why it’s doing this?
