iPC OSx86 Universal 10.5.6 Successfully Installed on a Dell Inspiron 600m or Latitude D600.

Dell Inspiron 600M comes with an Intel Pentium M processor and 802.11b wireless network. Those wishing to pay a little more can upgrade the system to a 802.11g wireless adapter. Memory is above average with 384MB, but below the leading 512MB of competing models. Audio is powered by AC’97 Audio. Graphics is a good mix of a 14.1″ LCD matched with an ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 graphics processor. Physical dimension of laptop is 12.4″ x 10.1″ x 1.2″ @ 5.3 lbs. Here we have a simple to follow guide on how to install OSX86 on Dell Inspiron 600m or Latitude D600. In the following guide we used iPC OSX86 Universal 10.5.6. iPC is the most advanced distro. If you are more experimental and looking for a dual boot then check my dual boot guide here.

For wireless connection, Get iwi2200.dmg from the main project page, http://code.google.com/p/iwidarwin/ , not from the iPC install. If you have one of the older Dell Inspiron 600m, you may have a different wireless card. Check it first. The iwidarwin project has drivers for the PROSet/Wireless 2100 and a few other as well.

OK, I have searched for 4 hours straight and there is no a17 revision for the Dell Latitude d600 so by the miracle of god, if you have one please give it to me. andinolazaro@hotmail.com

Great article. I was using kalyway with my 600m and I was having issues with restarting and sleep. I tried this and everything seems ok except when I download dmg files I get a kernel panic when it tries to mount them. This was strange since I had the wifi driver on a thumb drive and it mounted and installed with no issues.

Can you send me the iso file so that I can install on a Dell Latitude D600?

            Thanks.

I had the same problem finding A17, so I went with A16. I had problems with even getting the installer to start until I actually enabled Speedstep (restoring defaults). I never would have thought having it disabled would have caused my previous problems. Thank you for this guide. It saved me a lot of time, as I lose most by process of elimination (which kernels, drivers, etc.).

          • Ardivian said:

I over read the A17 bios install so i went w/ A16 even though the Dell website had it in my download section. I installed successfully, but OSX isn’t recognizing the WIFI or Ethernet Adapters. So it was somewhat successful for me. lol
Now to remedy that little problema.

I’m trying to install 10.5.6 on my Inspiron 600m, but it just won’t work. I put the DVD in and tried to boot from it, but it goes straight to Windows. How can I resolve this?

Hello, I installed iPC on my Dell Inspiron 1420 but after it boots (Apple screen with the gear) appears a blue screen, then the display is turned off and after that it doesn’t shows anything… I will try to do it like this, it could work…

            (:

Hey Hector, I installed iatkos 5i in my dell inspiron 1420 like 4 months ago. The problem of the dell 1420 is the graphics card, i really dont know why, anyway what you need to do is to disconnect the laptop as soon as the screen turns off, and close it, then wait for exactly 11 min, open it again and press any key and you should be in the language selection. Now as soon as you get to the desktop go to sys. preferences, then in the expose config choose at any corner “sleep”, so when you log in you move the mouse to that corner and awake the display, with this you should fix the login problem.

This setup seems to work but there isn’t a graphics kext that supports opengl so you won’t get anything 3d on it.

My D600 loaded perfectly with the modified permissions. Much Thanks for the instructions. Everything including wifi is working perfectly, even software update. My only questions is whether I can change the resolution higher than 1024×768. Thanks

I have it working on a 600 as well. VERY COOL. Just need better video driver to get better resolution and for video. Cannot play a DVD video. Although if that is the only thing that does not work I cannot really complain.

Everything goes fine, but when I do the part “/sbin/mount -uw /” it reports that the disk is locked for writing….??? Then I try to go ahead anyway, and edit the next file with nano, but it reports “command” not found. So I suppose nano is not installed?

I’m having the same issue that Mike is having. I get that the disk is locked when I enter “/sbin/mount -uw /” I used the iPC OSx86 10.5.6 Universal PPF5 (Final).iso. Is this wrong distro?
            Thanks

The procedure is very simple and worked fine without any problem at all. Mine is Inspiron 600m bought in 2004, brcm modem, dell 1350 wireless, A17. I tried several versions of OSX but only succeeded with IPC OSX86 Universal 10.5.6. Thank you for all you hard work. Keep up the good work!

okay..i got everything to work on this. but the actual screen isn’t filling the monitor, it looks like it has black bars on all sides of the screen. we all know screen real estate is important, and one open safari window fills everything. please help

          • grogargh said:

Some things that I needed to do to get this to work (better)

In “Phase 2″ it tells you to boot “with” the DVD ad press F8 – DONT DO THIS. BOOT WITHOUT THE DVD AND THEN PRESS F8. This is why when you execute the commands it tells you that the drive is “locked/no write” – its talking about the DVD which is obviously read-only (duh).

            Oh, and the commands after you press F8 are “-f -s -v” – not “-F -S -V” – yes its case sensitive…

Now if i can only get the Ethernet (Broadcom 440x) to work – I am re=installing for the second time, this time I selected the Apple BCM440X patch – lets see if it works… other than that, I got a random freeze and DO NOT software update to the latest 10.X.X.X (whatever it is) – it totally crashed my system.

          • grogargh said:

I got my Dell 600M Broadcom 440x to work now – If your 600M has this, then when you “Customize” right before installing, in addition to the all the above mentioned drivers/patches, select:

            AppleBCM440XEthernet

            Under “Ethernet” – works now!

my install looks great but I was unable to make any changes to the file under phase 2
I got in and was at the root but thethe final command didn’t work
            2. In single user mode, enter these commands:
            /sbin/fsck -fy
            /sbin/mount -uw /
            [bold]cd /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
            nano -w com.apple.Boot.plist[/bold]
is this something that has to be done
            everything works.
            thanks in advance

Installing 10.5.6 on Latitude D600. Going crazy trying to get the TrueMobile Wireless working. I was able to get a USB Netgear WG111 working but would really prefer to use the internal wireless.

The internal wireless works fine under Windows and Ubuntu

I finally got it working using this method. I had a few difficulties with WiFi, but ended up finding this http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t51725.html which worked ! (Search for D600 in the post, there are some comments a long way down about getting the kext from 10.5.5.).

Does anyone have iPhoto’09 (v8) installed and working ? It works but you can’t view photos bigger than thumbnails and editing leaves blank screen. I’ve read posts about this being lack of Quartz Extreme, but I can’t believe that would stop you being able to view photos larger than thumbnails… ?

Anyone found any other ATI 9000 drivers or solutions to help this ?

degreecy – how did you get the wifi working? I look at the link you have above and cannot figure it out for the life of me. Read the link page a bunch of times but can’t find what you refer to. Have a D600 with Wifi card. OS will not recognize the Wifi card nor the onboard NIC.

            Thanks if you can help.
