What is it about the new MacBook that makes it especially different from other laptops in the industry? Apple has gone to great lengths to scrutinize every step of manufacturing to try and reduce the amount of environmentally harmful materials used to make the new laptop, from PVC free internal cables to a unibody enclosure made from recyclable aluminum. Most laptops use mercury in backlights and arsenic is often in the glass of LCD monitors/displays. Moving from CCFL to mercury free LED technology has not only eliminated the potential environmental harm from the use of mercury, but it has also helped to create a more efficient laptop. Is it possible to increase performance and power efficiency simultaneously? Rationally speaking, you can’t have one without the other. To determine the most efficient operating patterns when designing hardware and software, Apple has previously looked for ways to cut energy consumption, from throttling down hard drives when inactive to LED backlit displays designed to dim when entering a dark room. Now, Apple has created a laptop worthy of Energy Star certification.

For fans of the green movement, sometimes the simple things are the most impressive. In addition to the eco-friendliness of Apple’s newest products, the company has also cut down on packaging materials. Of course, from the MacBook Pro to the iPod Shuffle, the packaging is completely recyclable. So if green is what you desire, MacBook has taken the lead in the laptop category.
