2281990637_1d0b4f533d_m Mark Shuttleworth Named Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope because he plans on focusing on speed for the release. Take a Quick look at the upcoming release, Jaunty is optimized for Netbooks because Ext4 is able to detect SSD and do some various tweaks to maximize the life of the drive. The EXT4 provide file system checking while the drive is still in use which no other file system offers. EXT4 is capable of managing volume sizes of up to one exabyte. ( 1 exabyte = 1,048,576 terabytes ) yep it’s true Terabytes of memory not Gigabytes.

Ubuntu 9.04 is loaded with GNOME 2.26 desktop environment, Linux kernel 2.6.28, OpenOffice.org 3.0.1, The GIMP 2.6.5, Mozilla Firefox 3.0.6 and Thunderbird 2.0.0.19, Filezilla 3.2, Deluge 1.1 or Pidgin 2.5.4 and much more. Current release date is scheduled for April 23rd, 2009.

Faster Boot Time is the main attraction of Ubuntu 9.04 Softpedia tested the boot process of a default Ubuntu 9.04 Alpha (Build 20090112.1) installation on two machines, an AMD Sempron 1.8 Ghz, 80 GB IDE hard drive with 512 RAM DDR and an Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 running at 2.2 Ghz, 250 GB SATA hard drive with 4 GB RAM DDR2. Here are the results of tests:

· Ubuntu 9.04 Alpha with EXT3 filesystem boots in 24.5 seconds ( Intel Core 2 Duo system)
· Ubuntu 9.04 Alpha with EXT4 filesystem boots in 21.4 seconds (Intel Core 2 Duo system)
